Title: *** Raleigh Aero Pro Burner ***
Post by: beard1973 on May 05, 2009, 10:07 PM
This bike has been TWO years in the making, its one of the 'Holy Grail' bikes to us Burner Collectors and I wanted it to be perfect.

Its still a few parts short of being how I want it... but its getting there.

The NOS decal set is simply stunning and to have the bike in the correct colours really means the most to me.

Without the following people I wouldn't have this build anywhere near where its is today.. [Zippy, ButtsBikeShop, Mike0310, cbrgil, Esemdesign, SE-Bmxer, Monkian & Craig Schofield].
The bike I wanted as a boy of 11....   :smitten:

Here's a funny little story.

Back in 1990/91 when I started to get interested in BMX again (when the people who were still into BMX were into it for riding, not collecting) I went up to Hemel Hempstead to buy a Skyway TA off a mate's cousin.  I got the complete TA for £120 and he also offered me a complete one of those Burners for £100.  Being a poor student (and also because I didn't need another bike and I wasn't a Burner fan at all) I politely declined.

I wondered if it's still in that shed in Hemel?

Apparently the colour is really difficult to match in the PANTONE Colour Chart. BMXMAN has had a couple of attempts and its either a bronze colour or Red...

I got this set from Craig Schofield last year... and was absolutely stoked...  :D :D :D

Then last month he sent me these...

I'm pretty sure I will be keeping these... just in case...  ;)

when i look at aero pro's i still get the same feeling as i did when i woke up on xmas day as a 12 year old.i love the look of them and always will.they were a top spec straight of the box bike.incredible value for £225 if i remember rightly.no one else came close in spec for the money.i was gutted when i got mine stolen.then i saw the saddle on a racing bike of a kid just up the road.problem was he was from the roughest family on the estate.when i asked him about it he said he had found the saddle.well i must of loved that bike cos i went and knocked on the door of this family.the old man answered and i asked him if they had "found" any more of my bike.i walked into the front room to find it minus the wheels and the seat.i picked it up and walked out with it with them watching me open mouthed.they could'nt believe it.nothing was ever said cos back then you went to prison for stealing bikes.never did have the money to put the right wheels back on it and eventually gave it to my brother who then promptly got it nicked again.the jmc darryl young bars that tony williams talked me into buying would be worth a few quid now.anyway,i've bored you enough.

Have you still got the one you had at Warrington?

no beard.i sold that one to buy a chrome one which was also at warrington.kamodo was riding it and i asked if he wanted to sell it, as it was the same as the one i had as a kid.its more or less mint and just needs a new set of stickers.i've polished it up and vasalened the chrome as its kept in a cold ,brick built shed.my wife rides it when we go out with the kids.he eventually sold it to me after a few years of badgering and he moved to australia.had to promise i would'nt sell it on for massive profit.haha.
warrington was where it all started for me.i got back into bmx up there and i've never looked back.

Best one at your BB meet Dave  :daumenhoch: .

I'm blown away that there's so many with "red" repro decals , they look really wrong and am so surprised peeps haven't mastered the colour compared to their attention to detail & spend per bike . It NEEDS to be right , a kinda bronzey colour , not red ! .

Yes, but they could have said to the designers, just copy the geometry of our pro bike.  The everyday burner looked like it had been squished up in a huge vice ;D

So you still got that Aero Pro then Justin ? I rode that at Alans first old school meeting, cant remember the year but it did not stop raining all weekend) (stayed with Jez hayes.....that was eventfull as always). I was full on into Triathlon at the time, I came of the bloody thing on a tiny speed jump and couldnt run properly for nearly two months.(but did get a pic of me in Ride) I worked for BA at the time and flew up from Gatwick to Leeds Bradford airport in a scary little twin prop plane. Bikes were officially not allowed in the hold of this poxy little crop duster, but a good mate was a baggage handling supervisor and he pulled rank on the two blokes who refused to touch the bike (and wanted to call in a union official) but when I flew back to Gatwick on sunday afternoon (still wet and badly bruised) they got there own back, as I was the last off the plane busy chatting up the cabin crew chic, I saw my Aero Pro thrown from the hold straight onto the bloody tarmac........tossers !

Just got my Aero Pro from my Mum & Dad's loft. Euuwergh!! Oh dear.
The old girl's a bit brown.
I raced in the day and this was my ride. Me and my Dad changed out most of the parts for light aluminium in blue; Suntour 3-piece crank and seat clamp, Sugino Chain wheel, Bear-traps. The dia-compe sets were identical, just blue. Elina (?) UL cro-mo light weight seat/ post unit and Tioga Cro-mo bars. Sharpe mushrooms and bar ends. Left the original Araya Aeros, Tioga Comp III tyres and black Suntour hubs on. Stem may be SR? I think the parts taken off ended up on my kid (at the time, he's bigger than me now) brother's white DP Firebird frame/ fork set he was building. Team Raleigh pads rather than the black ones, complete with fading from the lime in the track cement! The seat's really low, set for a 10 year old. I'd like to attach some images, but haven't worked it out yet.
I Loved my bike. So light, and it still looks SO right. Won loads of races on it. 1st in age-group North West, a couple of times. Raced Champion of Champions Tamworth. Nationals at Three Sisters Wigan. Memories! I lived BMX. I used to vomit in my Haro face mask from the nerves of the competition of it all like, ..but what a lovely time.
The bike once got stolen from a shed, but was recovered by a marshall from our club when he found it in a second-hand shop. Magic.
Obviously all the Aluminium parts are as great as they were then but the frame/ fork and bars are knackered. Gonna try looking into gettin' 'em blasted and re-chromed.
The decals are going to be a problem. I have to find out where you can get them without being the red ones everyone's talking about or being prohibitively expensive.
Anyone out there have any suggestions?
Anyone have them or know where to go?
Or anyone had luck with Adobe Illustrator?
Good to be back!
