As it says i got offered an old rusty bmx of a guy i got speaking to. Not really knowing what i was offered but thinking i could use some parts and break even on the rest i thought id buy it.
When i obtained it it looked like this

Then i had a little clean (first time at this) used the tin foil and coke method and wirewool/ autosol on the f/f, just soapy water on the mags/ parts

I was going to rechrome it all but decided to just decal it up and have it as it is. With new cables, tyres, seat and maybe fix the bars up. Not sure just yet :D
Really didnt know what i had till i got loads of interest in people wanting to buy this off me. Im glad i paid the £60 for it now :2funny:
-
nice find, just about add a 0 when finished :4_17_5:
-
Great find!!!!
Should have kept the decals on though.
-
sweet fine, been trying to find a freestyler that had just the red decals with no black out line as a reference for the site. looks in great condition too.
what decals are you putting back on it?
please tell me you took the decals off with a hair dryer and you stuck them down onto some A4 paper, did it have any Made In Great Britain decals on? :'(
have a look on my site, http://www.dpfirebird.co.uk/#/shop/4531652211
looks like an early unstamped frame too.
steve
-
Wanna sell me that red tuff neck chain wheel?
Nice bike, BTW... ;)
-
Great find !
Nice bit of resto so far too - shame about the decals eh !
-
Absolute bargain for £60
-
reminds me of the first firebird I had that my mate gave me as compensation for denting my gt with a hammer :LolLolLolLol:
Nice parts on that too :daumenhoch:
-
Hi again and thankyou for the very kind words. I did not use a hairdryer :-[ to remove the decals. Though i did stick the ones i had saved on a bananna box :uglystupid2: after reading your replies i rushed over and pealed them off. Now i have some yellow and green paper stuck to the back of the decal (not loads though).
DP-I have got the Made in England one too!! Iv stuck them on a white sheet now and i can take a photo if anyone wants a look to tell me if they are ruined. Iv also been on your website and had a look at decal, this 1 came with Red frame decals and Black and gold flame fork decals. I was going to leave them on but wire wool marks and they were torn/rusted.
Im not really looking to trade parts just yet as iv had a few offers for swaps and bidding. I have sold a couple of bikes to make room for this and my other streebeat.
2 builds at once is stressfull!
Nice1 peeps :)
-
hi deano
when i got my chrome freestyler it looked like this, i only bought the frame, forks and headset
same decals, red and black on the frame and black and gold forks
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/a352/esemdesign/2008_1127wintertohome0010.jpg)
it now looks like this
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/a352/esemdesign/IMG_0607.jpg)
-
Wow DP thats a great job of cleanin up you done there :daumenhoch: Those decals were like mine on the forks (mashed up) lol
Looks like the same chrome-moly made in england sticker too :)
Does yours have a stamp? I wondered why mine doesnt??
Do you suggest i put white walls on as i here thats what lads had bitd?
Seat clamp? MX or ???
Finally where did you get your decals? and why not the originals/ repro?
You have the knoledge i need :D
-
Very nice Deano :daumenhoch:
-
superb, still waiting for my "shed find" :D
shame bout the decals like i woulda left it as a true survivor, with a little clean up.
-
^^ yes i thought about it hard before i started pealin ::) then seen it cleaned up ok and would have been spot on for a survivor >:(
Now ill just be happy to have it as is, and a few new parts that needed replaced.
Pleased is an understatement.
Thanks for the nice feedback RAD!!!
-
nice find :daumenhoch:
do you have a pic of the whole bike as it was found?
i always like to see that :daumenhoch:
-

i found 1 same as that few years back but stupidly sold it on :-[
-
Awesome find, I'd love a DP Firebird!! :smitten:
-
look at that, it has Firebird frame decals on the forks, never seen that before 8)
-
Id not seen a DP before this 1 though i new the name, so it was all new to me. It had a lot of other stickers placed over it which protected the frame well in parts.
Iv only been bake into bmx's for the past 18months so still slightly wet behind the ears guys :-[
I have had some great help on here so far.
Thanks RAD :daumenhoch:
-
Nice find mate - the tuffs alone are worth more than what you bought the whole bike for :LolLolLolLol:
Result 8)
-

Seeing this post makes me want to restore mine now !!

-
I wondered why it was going so high, and who's to say hugh aint got1 in his shed ;)
Id be asking for too much if i wished mine had1 when i bought it ;D
-

-

-
its at £460 now, not sure if i trust the bidding on that one :-\
Ended at £512
Someone must have really wanted that seatpost :idiot2: Apart from the frame and forks and the seatpost there's not much else of any value on it.

This is coming on fast and just waiting on a couple of other small parts and its done :)
I had to powder the bars as they were past saving :(
As it sits till levers arrive and cables.

Yeah, the bare essentials...1 to get you going... and 2 to stop you. ;D
Nice one Deano, been good to see this one come along. :daumenhoch:
-
LOL i forgot to mention i have the chain and cables and the levers came with the bike (tech3's) they are slightly scuffed so i bought some tech2's. Now iv tried and they dont fit cw bars so well ??? unless its because the bars were powdered with 2coats. Well using the original ones keeps it as much of a survivor as possible.
Maybe buy another set of used bars in the future.
Ok all i need to do is buy decals :daumenhoch: :2funny: thanks phantom :coolsmiley:
-
Ok this is finished now just in time for MK.
Id like to thank everyone who helped me with advice and parts, especially Brandy Truffle and Firebird :daumenhoch:
Its about as good i could have hoped for after the state i bought it in. Its only been a cheap tart up as i wanted it to be survivor (maybe powdered bars messed that up?)

Job well done mate :daumenhoch: I think the lay back post spoils the look a bit though....
-
N2cus, :daumenhoch: cheers mate that means a lot as your standards are super high quality. All your bikes make me dribble :buck2:
Subversion, im not really into the post that much either. This has been done on a budget and the post was given to me for free :-[. Well at least its easy to fix ;)
Iv added it up and after buying this bmx iv spent about £80 max on the resto. Thanks for the feedback guys and i do take it all onboard for nexttime 8)
-
hey thats a very nice compliment deano . you have the touch mate and £80 spent . :D i hope to see it in botm :daumenhoch:
-
and i agree with subvision that seat post is a bit pooey . do you think a black seat post to match the bars maybe ?
-
Deano,
That Firebood looks incredable man and all for a layout of £140!!!! :D
I agree with N2cus though a black seatpost would finish off your sweet ride a treat :smitten:

Had one bitd so wanted one for a while.
Took me nearly a year to get one ,only got this one cos the ebay listing finished about 2am midweek ! :2funny: :idiot2:
It just needs the stickers ,dont know if the earlier ones are rarer therefore worth more :daumenhoch: :2funny: wishfull thinking :D
I have noticed theres not alot of chrome ones about tho ................ (waiting for 3 pages of chrome freestyler to be posted )

Shame to box it away though mate :'(
-
This blinking thread just wont go away
So i had some black CW bars on this build and i had been on the look-out for some chrome freestyle bars for ages. Id not had any luck in finding any and Jake was selling some white bars i liked so bought them
Thanks Jake off BW
Now they were in good shape and looked fine (but not chrome) so i sent them off to :butts: for the magic wand treatment
I know he is the man and he tried to talk me out of it because the metal was pitted badly but i begged him to try  as they were for a survivor anyway.
Pictures: Note the pitting is underneathand not the gnurled centers, my pictures aint the best.

Had to change the seatpost too
This is how it will stay now as im well chuffed with how it looks, there not ladder bars but better than the cw's imo
-
I much prefer the chrome bars to the black Cee-Dubs - chrome Cee-Dubs would have been fine also, IMO. :daumenhoch:
Do you think red DX's would look nice on it? You could always try some of that red (plastikote) glass paint if you want a colour change. It does come off if you don't like it.
-
Ozone thats not a bad idea about red dx's 8) Thanks buddy.
The cw's were chrome but flaked all over so i coated them to keep the cost down. Im keeping them and maybe ill buy some chrome ones one day as im told early dp's often had cw's.
Cheers :)
-
Well nice that :smitten: Do like these firebirds
-
Lovely build deano :4_17_5: :coolsmiley:
-
much better dean them black bars and seat post looked out of it mate
-
Nice work Deano, I like that a lot. I liked the black bars and seatpost look but it looks just as funky with the new parts.
-
This is how it will stay now as im well chuffed with how it looks,
I bet it doesn't :D :LolLolLolLol:
Likeing the new look mate :daumenhoch:
Ozone's comment of the Red pedals sounds good to me 8)
-
Sorry but the black bars pushed the buttons for me :daumenhoch:
