Title: Head set issue
Post by: tuff boy on May 30, 2009, 07:37 PM
Just built my latest ride however when fitting the head set (tioga bear trap2).   The race crown just fell into place on my 85/86 haro fst forks without the usual hammer and scewdriver action.

It's in the right place but its loose, and gives the feel of a loose headset when i rock back and forwards with brake on full, is this common with Haro forks, and has anyone got an idea on how to fix.

Im thinking gaffa tape around bottom of stearing tube then refit race crown? ???

Cheers chaps

You need a different Crown race!!

I think most 90's 1" Headsets came with 2 crown races so that you can choose the tight one to fit your forks!!

Have you got some calipers to measure the diameter of your forks?

Either that or your Crown race might have the size etched into it!!  :daumenhoch:

...don't use tape to try to bridge the gap, you'll just end up with a load of sticky mess of crushed up tape residue in your bearings & a loose HS again :crazy2:

sometimes you see a very thin loose sleave that just sits inside the race on the forks, ive had to pack out mine with tin foil before :idiot2:  i know!!!   but it worked without the race working loose
