Title: how were acs hubs finished...

i have some nos acs hubs in gold, with bits of the finish chipped, very minor i may add, but it looks like a plastic coating of some sort, very much unlike anodice, its finish (colour) also looks inconsistant, they are definately nos as this is how  i remember them bitd, can anyone confirm how they were re-finihed?

That sound right to me, I had some nos gold acs hubs dated 82 they have a kind of translucent gold lacquer on them its defo not ano

yep a powder/laquer finish of some kind ..looks like anno tho ..lmk when u mastered the gold sam .. i got some for ya to do

ACS alloy parts were 'melt forged'. You can't anodise melt forged ali. The finish is a coloured lacquer sprayed over the bare ali - much like on DX pedals. It always chips very easy.

Melt forging is basically pouring molten ali into a mould. Better stuff is 'cold forged'. You can anodise this - such as SunTour Power Stems, Suzue hubs, DC brakes, etc. Cold forging is when the ali is squashed or pressed into shape. It's stronger than melt forging, so less material is needed and the parts are generally finer and lighter, with a much nicer surface finish.

deffo laquer as i have just put some nito-mors on some and the gold came off in a shot  :daumenhoch:
