Title: Skyway tuffs V new wheels
Post by: nhoj on July 13, 2009, 10:34 PM
Just watching Jamie Beswick and co on the modern ramps and less than 1metre away  from the telly I have 2 firebirds with skyways.

Just got me thinking, skyways were a true 80's deffining part but would they last 5 minutes in todays action?

They used to break bitd

I've run a front on my new school bike for about 5 minutes in a skatepark....  flextastic...  :D

Crap then... crap now....  :(

For cruising about on an os bike they look the part though....  :daumenhoch:

No. Back in the 80's the style of riding was far different from what it is nowadays. Skyways flex terribley, i do i high bunny hop on my New Schooler and it feels so robust and strong, when bunny hopping with Skyways you can feel the flex very much, even if you pop a lil one.

Just as most are saying they flex far too much, they catch the wind if you go heigh in a breeze & they crack easy too... As far as looking good, that opinion.  I think they probly were better in the 80s as most of us were kids and alot lighter - so the flex was minimal?  I loved my skyways in the 80s, but now, no way.

I raced my skyways on my Haro at Leeds and they flex like fook!!

Even going around the berms you could feel the flex.

They might be alright for some young whippersnapper but for a fat git like me then they are shite!!  :-\

I love skyways me!!!! :smitten:

Hadn't really thought about how strong they were before, didn't realise they were that bad :-\

Wasn't it the old urban myth that you could put skyways in the freezer to fix them? :-\

If you're pretty light, then you could get away with a set of graphite mostly because you can get a bit more air in them, and they're a little stiffer.

Not my cup of tea anymore though, I'm way too fat for 'em these days.  Modern spokes are so much faster anyhoo.
