I wish I had a before pic because this stem woz f***ed
All the chrome had peeled off in large patches
+ it was scratched and scraped.
But look at it now
A lot of work goes in (coz its chrome over alloy)
1st reverse the chrome process to get it back too plain alloy.
Then very very carefully polished
(as its very easy to polish out the writing)..then replate
I had my turbo stem, seat clamp and chainring done
it looks soo much better than just polishing

sooooooooooooo nice!
i chromed a chainring a spider and a frame in France and i paid 280 pounds, the job was ok exept on the spider he said the alloy was special, the chrome wasn't shiny and very bad, so now i remove it myself because i don't want him to fook it more >:( ,
Scary, did your chromer tell you about different alloys easy to chrome or not?

Scary, did your chromer tell you about different alloys easy to chrome or not?
not at all, he looked at it and said no problem.
the only problem is if the alloy has engraving and how deep that is.(deeper the better)
-
yes because they grind all he told me that. the chainring was a sugino and i wanted to keep the stamp and no problem , but on the disc no stamp but fooked lol
-
When I had a hutch stem re-chromed recently, I was there for the whole process. The first time the chrome flaked off due to how 'pure' the alloy was (his words not mine), so he had to heat-treat it prior to rechroming.
If it fails the first time around and flakes off they have to re-polish, this is where it lost a tiny detail of the stamp.

you're right i think they didn't polish enough that's why the chrome was bad, but now it's very hard to remove about 20 hours that i'm trying lol 75% of the job is done, handly with sand paper grade 180 to 1200 and after polish solution
-
looking good lee, is it nearly ready now ??
-
not really Matt...hopefully xmas
i just plod along with it :)
-
Yoh Lee! ;) have you been back yet? if so did you manage to find out about the cost of having a f+f chromed? cheers Daz...

Great work and parts Scary.
A really good place to get details of tools, polishing kits, sandblasting, chrome plate etc etc is from oldbikemart newspaper. This is really cheap to buy and is the classic / vintage etc motorcycle bible. I worked at the publishers for a while, it is subscription only but has so many old boy people doing the top end m/c's you can get all the information you'll ever need. The other mags also have some great reputable companies.
