I'm trying to find out what a Redline Carrera is exactly :-\
All I can find so far have been pl-20's or rl-20's and I'm dying to get me hands on one, I remember a mate had a white one with red tuffs that was the dogs danglies bitd and I'd like to re-create that very bike.
Are they rare as rocking horse poo or just poo?
Any help appreciated ;)
-
i only ever saw a chrome one in about 84.
top machine back then.
-
Cheers Dordy
So a rarity then? Is that what they're called 'carrera's' or was there numbers and stuff involved aswell, like the pl-20's or something?
-
The Carrera was Redlines top of the range, off the shelf complete race bike... like a Leary Turbo, but with a better paint job and quality cranks, and cost big bucks.
It's a PL20 frame and fork set, with flights, brute stem , proline bars, Redline seatpost, Ukai rims, Suntour s/f sealed hubs, Dia Compe MX1000 Brakes, then it all depends on which year...
Good luck finding a frame pad... if you think Hutch or Leary pads go for big bucks, just wait till one of these gets on ebay
Fantastic Bike.
-
I've got one I got off Subwax. Not got round to getting it built yet though.
Have a word with Neil, he knows his Redlines, plus he's got 2 others built up. Check 'em out in the museum, they're in there. Flippin lovely bikes.
Cheers
Guy :)

a local shop back in the day(peter williams motorcycles) southampton had one for sale, had top notch stuff on it,he couldnt sell it as a complete bike and parted it out,i had the redline flights from it 170 pre pinch bolt type with sealed bb wish i still had them :'( sold them to buy 401s :idiot2:
-
Top bikes.
I nearly had a white one BITD went to the shop to get it for my Chrimbo present with my dad and it had gone. :'( :'( :'(
It was in a shop window on the Rayleigh Weir roundabout in about 83/84.
When I saw it it was a total "Waynes World" moment. Beautiful bike it was.
But Stairway denied.

Check the above thread out on Vintage BMX, it's worth a look if you like Redlines.

Cheers Fellas, much appreciated :daumenhoch:
Now if anyone's got an old redline liying about that they don't need or want, please let me know.
Tesco's finest pork pie selction box waiting :)

Any pics ?
I don't like chutney though, so bear that in mind please :)
-
Which gen Carrera are you looking for, mate?
Also, as faras I am aware, Carrera's only came in chrome - not white.
Dia compe 890's were the choice of brakes on the gen 1 Carrera's, MX-900's on the Carrera II - never used 1000's at all. Pre-bent levers on the gen 1 and tech 3's on the Carrera 2.
Early Carrera's had Araya rims, not Ukais. The later Carrera II had Ukais. Also gen 1 were unsealed hubs, gen 2 sealed.
XC compe pedals for gen 1's, XC II's for Carrera II's.
Any more info needed, drop me a line.

One thing often fogotten when hunting a 1st gen Redline Carrera - the frame does not have a bracket between the bottom chainstays. That will make your search even harder as they are exceptionally rare to find.
-

Having probs getting a pic on here again, says I'm exceeding something or other :-\
But, I can assure you that they are completely NOS, never been munched, nibbled or placed anywhere near any kind of chutney.
The box is still up in the loft somewhere, I'll see if I can dig it out ;D

Cheers Neil, not sure which one to go for, I'd be happy with either to be honest :D
I'm positive my mate had a white one with red tuffs on it - maybe he had a pl-20 or something and just got some carrera pads for it?
-
The one I saw in the shop window BITD was definitely white.
-
Just got the decals on mine tonight. (I tried to mail you Neil, but my mail server is down) Redline V-bars, and brute stem too

Guy,
That is looking sweet. That stem looks nos, or have refurbed it?
I'm waiting on a few bits before building up a Carrera II, can't wait till its done :daumenhoch:
-
Guy,
That's just plain cruel :2gunsfiring_v1:
Looks very good indeed ya bugger. ;)
-
The stem was not strictly NOS, but looks like it's never been used. I've had the frame & forks re-chromed, not perfect, but better than it was. The bars are as they came from Neil, pretty good already. Just gotta find the rest of the parts. Maybe not totally to spec, but to my taste as usual ;)
-
Decals are spot on, mate. Well done.

This applies to the one in the link. It's not quite the same. :-\
-
Sorry forgot to mention that.
Here is a pic that shows the Carrera II clearer with the chainstay bridge.

-
Carrera I or Carrera II, I'm not fussy :D
Cheers Fellas!!!
-
Bow Lacks.
It's been sold :tickedoff:
The search continues......
-
To clarify - Carrera I's did not have the bridge - Carrera II's did, and a little gusset behind the seatpost too.
Carrera's did not come in white - only chrome.
-
Strange, cos the one I saw in the shop was definitley white and it was displayed as a Carerra.
This was 1983/4, I wonder what it was then?!?!?
It had exactly the same stickers as the one at the top of this page.
Anyone hazard a guess.
-
I have seen photos of a white and candy red Carrera, okay Stu was riding them, so they may not have been for public release, but they did exist. I think I remember the white version had a Carrera decal on the seat post down tube.
If I can get my old PC working, I'll try and find some pictures.

I'm working on a special myself... watch this space ;)
Nice decals gmac...
-
No - definately no white - only chrome - okay
Carrera's were not available in 83 / 84 - Carera II's were, and they too were not available in anything other than chrome. Easy mistake yto make would be to confuse it with a PL20, which looks exceptionally similar - only the frame pad and the chainstay decal would give the games away.
-
Here's the ad:
The last line says "Available in chrome with red or blue components".
Jim - that style decal was used for the Carrera, the PL-20 and the MX-2 - only the writing in the red bars was different, and you'd have to be fairly close to tell.
-
Fair play Sub.
But the one I saw was exactly the same as that (pads as well) but it was white. It had all red components on it, with red Z-Rims.
Perhaps they had it sprayed up.
Either way it was feckin lovely and I wanted it. :LolLolLolLol:
-
Bren has mentioned one like it too. Redline only officially released the Carrera in chrome. God knows what they were then - maybe some kind of home grown concoction.
-
Please read my advert, then look at the picture... Carrera II (pictured), looks white to me.
I'm sure I've got a better picture on my other PC.
-
I was sponsored in 84/85 (with a Redline PL20 F+F etc) just like the one DD Leone is on in the pic...............................
It was WHITE :daumenhoch: (It's interesting that the DD pic description says PL20 Carrera II ?)
When I got it it had the decals on it just like the ones in Frosty's pic , I added the later decals when they became available .
Pics .

Are you talking about the original Carrera or the Carrera II?

Seems like others remember a white Carrera too.
Any pics would be good.
-
What is it about this game, as soon as you say enoughs enough another bike comes along and sucks you right back in again!
Just been offered a Carrera 2 F&F for £95.00 posted from the states :tickedoff:
-
Any pics?? Sounds like a good price to me.

It's the same bike as the one you pm'd me the pictures of before chief :daumenhoch:
-
Nice :daumenhoch:

Right then, I'm having it :daumenhoch:
Will be selling my mark 1 tuff burner (say it quietly) less the yellow tuffs of course, very soon.
Seems like a fair swap :D :D

Hope that's my craving cured now :daumenhoch:
-
If you look at the decals on Matt's above you'll see they are the same black background type that are on the PL-20 700c above.
This brings us back full circle to the statement from Neil that the Carrera II was only ever available in chrome (at least to normal punters). The white ones do look like Carrera spec built 700c frames, which as far as I can tell are the same anyway!!
My Carrera II does not have the gusset behind the seat tube, but these seem to be pretty hit and miss anyway.
Time to secure those last parts and complete my build.
Get some more Redlines in the Gallery (that are not Reilly's!!!).

Hey, I've just noticed that there seems to be a seatpost stuck in there
:wtf:
