I know from experience not everbody had vdc jmc hutch and burners ::)
But what was the best spec bike for affordable money
-
im no expert but some of the higher spec burners were defo good value with arayas, dia compe,sr etc,it seems that the better brands entry level bikes often came with crap parts(to keep cost down)so it was either a burner spec'd up or a tasty brand frame and forks with junk parts.i gotta say tho i would have had a db viper over any burner tho crap parts or not!:LolLolLolLol:

DB Silver Streak imho, beutiful bikes

kuwahara nova...lot of bike for 210 quid.
torker 280x were a good complete as well...
alans used to do some mean r gusset complete's..but deemed too dear for us, and a bit up his own arse, so we got the nova's from sale cycles..
top bikeage. :daumenhoch:

round our way it was the good old firebird freestyler, there was loads of em,they first started making them just down the road from me and our local shop(bp cycles in tyldesley) must have had a deal with them, built up with some nice parts for about £175-£200 :daumenhoch:

Hutch Pro Star was a bargin!!!!!!!
-
Gotta be a Mongoose Cali for £180...
or as Mark said, the higher spec Tange-built Raliegh Burners - our kid "Hootski70" still has his original Raleigh CroMo Burner which as JT said is a Kuwwie Nova with UK stickers on :smitten:

Hutch Pro Star was a bargin!!!!!!!
Yup a tidy bargain the old Pro Star. :daumenhoch:

I remember the base model Mongoose was £150 locally nut came with cmc's on it and was tri moly frame ( only front triangle cro mo )
so it was heavy as
Whereas the the Silver streak was a great looking :smitten: and real good allround bike for just under £200( full cro mo )
but I'd ve gladly swapped my Ammaco for either of these in 81/82
Obviously in following years , your got more bling for your buck
Burners were well specced for the budget , I think Mk1 Ultra burners were only about £130 ::)
Getting my GT Nora for Crimbo 83 was money well spent ,
great quality , great geometry ,and not the dearest too , I'd say the best value item I got back then :4_17_5:

Mongoose Supergoose was always good value, MT Silverfox range, ProCraft, Torker completes and GT bikes
-
I had a Silver streak too!
It looked great - it road great, great parts, inc branded cromo 1pc, dia compe brakes, cromo bars, a really nice sugino stem, and 7x, and one of the first of the black and chrome look bikes.
I only found out a year or so ago it was apparently trimoly, but still, chose it over a Goose Cali. It was however, same price as a Torker 280, £225, but you couldn't get Torkers commonly anywhere easilly.
I;d say the 280 full cromo, but with v similar parts spec possibly a better value bike for £225. Or half the cost of a Leary!
