Title: another harry leary """ FINISHED """"
Post by: neiljonarcus on October 06, 2009, 04:52 PM
i have been asked to build another harry leary turbo for a gent called grant . he seen my last build and like it so as a nice person i will be doing it for him  . but not to spec as we are using a pro star as its got the same  geom as the turbo  . some nice bits though like a d.i.d chain , nice brakes , turbo cranks turbo stem . but on this build i need to recover the seat in suede so lets see how we get on

What's happening with the blue DC rear 890/1020?  Looks like a spare  ;) .

Going for the full polish effect with smoke finish or something a little different this time?

Title: Re: another harry leary turbo build
Post by: Juju on October 06, 2009, 09:21 PM
Too many HLT's in "immaculate restored" condition floating round these days.

Putting it back as an electric blue and chrome Team Pro bike and finding blue sugino maxy cross style DB 3pc would be a whole lot more interesting to the retro scene.

A bike like the early DB ads, with Pro Stars being advertised underneath.

The HLT is my least favourite of the top end DB's - finish too brittle, a little too "bling" with its Turbo parts.  Clumsy overbuilt 3pc, too much "chrome parts". And when completed - People tend to "showcase them" not actually "ride" them due to their value.

The owner will also know its not a "Harry Leary" but a nice fake - I think the rear drop out angles will always show the frame to be what it is.  Just my 5 $.   But my least favourite it may be, but still a fabulous bike. what ever you do with it.  This isn't meant to be a negative post, just a suggestion to do something even more interesting.

I think the rear drop out angles will always show the frame to be what it is.

Not quite correct Julian, both 1st and 2nd gen Senior Pro's/Leary's shared the exact same frame, only difference was the smoke layer. :daumenhoch:

Ok seeing as you SHOUTED!!!
So it’s the same frame but, the scenario I pictured was a guy paying good money only to log on here to find pictures of a senior pro turning into a turbo.. If I’d paid £1200 I’d feel a tad screwed.
Point made but really I couldn’t give a toss what you do.

there is no doubting your polishing skills, but i have a question, can someone tell me the difference from the guys that turned hot hearts in to ETs and about 3 sales on people were getting ripped off, or the recent haro scandle. it seems to me that the people jumping to your defence are reasonably new to the scene/site and are maybe unaware of the problems that builds like this cause in the future. im not having a pop just making people aware of the reason some people react harshly to a wolf in sheeps clothing

there is no doubting your polishing skills, but i have a question, can someone tell me the difference from the guys that turned hot hearts in to ETs and about 3 sales on people were getting ripped off, or the recent haro scandle. it seems to me that the people jumping to your defence are reasonably new to the scene/site and are maybe unaware of the problems that builds like this cause in the future. im not having a pop just making people aware of the reason some people react harshly to a wolf in sheeps clothing

i'm not jumping to anyones defence  ;)  just a bit taken aback by the "fooking retarded" bit.   that is, to say the least, rather  rude.   :idiot2:
imo the owner of that bike can have it done any way he wants.  if he wants it done as a hlt  then its all good.    :coolsmiley:

When i bought my my frame , I bought it thinking it it was Senior Pro ,( wasn't until I stripped it down that i saw all the black chrome areas steerer tube on the forks and round the BBcups,,, feckin reeeeeesult  :4_17_5: )

my original plan was to do a Factory Team model , with gold components

NOW that would have been totally lush  :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Never seen a Factory Team  with the gold decals  :'(

Senior Pro are great looking bike when resto'ed

If anyone has one on here , I'd love to see one done up like that

Check this Senior Pro :4_17_5:

let me put it another way to help you understand.  You win the lottery and your dream car is a farrari, you go out with lets say 100k you find a cracker but as your not a mechanic you dont know the ins and outs of said car. you pay your 100k and drive off happy as a pig in shite. 3 months later you take it for a service and upon paying for the service you are told you have a kit car with a ford engine in it. now the builder of the kit car sold it as a kit car and was 100% honest about it, unfortunatly the guy you bought it from was not as honest and has done you out of 90k, happy ??? no i think not. so the moral of this story is if you want a HLT then buy a fookin HLT not a senior pro or any other inferior model. Mr scary leary spent maybe 5 years collecting the correct parts for his HLT, and it is the best example i have ever seen, theres the difference you see.

did the rs500 sell  ?   i've advertised my nos but built twice in 83 mk1 burner. its a beauty, i squashed the tubing to make it look like a skyway and added pk ripper decals cos i like them better.
i built it in yorkshire so have named it the pk skyway yorkshire ripper burner. its better than all other bicycles.  will px for quality persian rugs or a mail order bride.  or the rs500 and cash my way.

Shoot me down in flames if I'm wrong but weren't the hlt and the senior pro built by the same people on the same production line using same tubing and same welding then chromed the same but one was given the hlt finish??

Had a pro bitd and have a frame now also..

I know the parts are different but that's not the problem..

Sure this has been gone over before..

Mark over at os-db has done hours of research I'm also sure of...

I can't see the problem...

Ferraris and fords are no comparison..

and to a collector neither is a senior pro and a hlt, ask a hutch collector the same question about a pro racer and a pro star. i guess all i can say is keep watching and in time you will see the result of this stuff. god bless and good luck  :daumenhoch:

I do understand where you're coming from..

But like hunterdubber says if that If his hlt had been dechromed fully no one would have known it was a hlt and just thought it was pro..

I agree hlt's deserve to be hlt's and pros deserve to be pros for them to be truly original..

Anyway I can see ya point but don't think painting the odd pro as a hlt or stripping the odd hlt yo be a pro is crime of the century thats all...

I love em both :daumenhoch:

Ah but it isn't a newbie is it?  It sounds suspiciously like that person who is no longer 'officially'on this site and would not be welcome back at any stage as themselves.

Bringing income up on a thread about a BMX could be about the most embarrassing thing I have ever read in my time on Rad.

That said, what the guy want's doing neil is doing a great job of. If an HLT was my passion i would be sending it to neil to restore but i wouldn't be happy with a fake tbh.

Beautiful job, love the frame finish, it would appear you have got the process very close to the original

I can understand the reason for making a replica, especially if you are wanting to ride it.....

I just acquired this after 27 years of wanting one!! This is 100% OG

obviously I want to ride it...but it is just to important to ride historically in my opinion....however I have all the parts to build a indentical HLT replica using my Senior Pro...but haven't been able to bring myself to do it to the senior Pro..yet.....and it is true I would always know it's not a legit HLT...even though the spec's would be identical

As they hang in my office currently

Sorry not trying to hi-jack, but I can see both side of the coin in this case....OG is best in my opinion but on occassions, replica's can be done nicely, and provided they aren't tried to be passed off as an original (which this one obviously hasn't been ) I can't see the harm. Just my 2c worth!
