I'd sand it dry then paint it. When it's dry,  wet sand it with 2000 grit. Then paint it again if you like. Then polish it after it hardens up a bit. I've done that in the past and it works well.

if you have put a few layers on, t.cut works well, then turtle wax. careful with the t.cut tho.specialy on the knobbly bits, it will take it back to the primer if you rub too much. the idea is just to remove any surface blemishes, or orange peel effects.

wait as long as you can be arsed.

with acrylic i have done it the next day and its looked ok.

i wait longer if its cellulose.

yours is probably acrylic tho......wait as long as you can it will polish better when it has hardened /cured.

flatting primer - a short guide

spray on your primer
spray a dust coat of "marker" - just dust a super light coat of spray paint on (not primer. you need to be able to see where you have flatted)
get some 1000 grit wet n dry, and a tub of soapy hot water
wet flat the marker off the primer. when the marker is all gone, you know you have got everywhere
wash off the frame to remove all dust
use a tack cloth to degrease it. from this point on dont handle the frame and leave greasy finger prints
keep the frame somewhere warm until it's time for the topcoat (airing cupboard is good)

keywords here are spray, soapy, greasy and warm

To do a proper job you should really use etching primer first. This eats into the metal and wont flake off like normal primer can do.
You can buy it in spray cans now, from shops that supply the trade with paint and sundries etc.(look in yellow pages)

Mist a guide coat of satin black over the primer, then wet flat it with 1000's.
Give it about 4 coats of top coat, then wet flat with 2000's.
Then polish up with cutting compound(Farecla G3 is best)then any polish that doesnt have silicone in.(just in case you want to paint it again another day)
Voila!
Job done. :)

Yeah but, if something goes wrong, that leaves you no time to correct it. Best make it 2 days before (if it were me)
