Title: DX refurb - first white, then RED...
Post by: dannywhiteley on November 01, 2009, 10:28 AM
Wanted some white pedals for my Rebel build, but for some reason they seem harder to come by unless you go for plastic.

Then spotted these for sale a while back:

Quick rub down, a blast with the rattle can, and new end caps (came with the pedals) and they were ready.  Not perfect, but much better than before:

When a pair of Hutch Hi Calibrer in white came up recently I preferred them for the Rebel and was about to sell the DX (sorry to anyone I messed about).  In the end fancied them on the TA, so stripped, re-polished and smoothed the ends better befroe hand painting with glass paint and a little artists brush.  Better pics on bike when it stops raining.

They look like they have come out well mate :daumenhoch:

Do you just apply the glass paint direct to the alloy ? ie no primer etc  :-\

Just stripped off the white rattle can paint, cleaned & lightly polished the pedals (sanded the ends down to get them much smoother), then painted on the glass paint by hand straight onto the alloy.  Its got a nice anodised look to it, they are a little darker then the original finish of my red SX, but unless you compared directly, few people would notice.

Little pots of this paint is available in most art shops, and its dead easy to apply by hand. It sort of smooths as you paint, and doesnt show the brush marks.  I did want to spray them originally using some of that red tint spray or plastikote glass spray but couldnt find it anywhere.  Took a punt on this and it worked perfectly.

Rebuilt now and on the bike. :)

Mate they look like they've turned out real nice  :coolsmiley:

I need to do this to a set - been thinking of buying the red plastikote glass spray (on the bay) but i'm in 2 minds now i've seen these  :-\

I was convinced you'd see the brush marks using anything other than a spray but you reckon the finish is pretty flat  ???

What make of paint did you use ? any pics of the tin / pot  :)

Pete - I started a thread about "glass paint" in general as I wanted to do some pedals in RED and wanted to see some results before chosing a product - here is the thread :

And here is the link to the plastikote spray on ebay (the link is for the RED but I think they do BLUE,GREEN & YELLOW also) :

Still don't know which way to go  :-\ :idiot2: :D :LolLolLolLol:

I'm tempted to get a can of red 'Plasti-Kote' for the DX I'm restoring but not convinced it'll adhere to alloy properly ... any comments on this  :)

Hokey, cokey...  Its called GlasArt Transparent by Marabu.  Comes in loads of colours in a little 15ml bottle.  Cost a couple of quid.  Most half decent art shops sell it.

Dead easy to apply flat as well, just lay it on reasonably think and it settles itself down nicely.  Didlt take long to do the two pedals and dries reasonably quickly as well (touch dry in a couple of hours and solid after 24)
