Hey guys,
As a few of you know, I had a few nightmares along the way with this one but my labour of love is now finally complete :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
Did most of the polishing myself on the frame & Forks prior to plating... keeps the cost down as the platers don't like doing the fiddly nooks and crannies so you end up with a perfect job this way :daumenhoch:
I'd like to thank a few of you for helping me with some of the parts.... Orangezippy for parting with his NOS Brute Stem, Mattdub & Tricknuts for helping me with shipping the forks from the states, Worldwide for the NOS Ukai Rims, Bodamus for the NOS Knarler Knobbies, Hunterdrubber for the NOS Suntour Seatclamp and finally Biagio for the NOS Suntour Sealed Hubs, Suntour Chainring, DC MX900 and Asahi Spokes.
Hope you all like... Specification as follows:
1981 USA Redline Proline II Frame & Forks (early version with thicker bottom bracket, thicker rear dropouts and no chainstay brace)
NOS Redline Proline V Bars
NOS Redline Brute Stem
NOS Redline Pad Set
NOS Redline Fluted Seatpost
NOS Elina Seat
NOS Sugino 400 180mm Flight Cranks with NOS Sugino Sealed BB and NOS 44t Suntour Chainwheel
NOS Suntour MP-1000 Sealed Pedals
NOS Izumi Nickel Chain
NOS Ukai Rims laced to NOS Suntour Sealed Hubs with NOS Asahi Stainless Spokes
NOS Knarler Knobby Tyres
NOS Dia-Compe MX900 Caliper with NOS DC Cable and NOS Tech 3 Lever
NOS Oakley II Grips

Stunning mate, great job :4_17_5:
One of my favourites too.
I, like Dordy would like a Redline :smitten:
How long did the prep work take you, and what did you use to polish it up?
I have a couple of frames I am working on, but its taking forever.

Hey Shaun.... the prep work took a while to be honest mate as I don't really have the top end tools. Just used a polishing kit off ebay on my drill, plenty of emory cloth to flat down the dropouts and heaps of autosol. Takes a lot of time but the effort is worth it as the chroming process shows the tiniest of flaws and covers nothing. Just keep it in your mind that when you're polishing you want the metal to be as close to chrome looking as possible... any scratches etc will show up after plating so just take your time and the hard work will pay off :daumenhoch:
-
beautiful finish defo bike of the year contendor ! :4_17_5:

That's what I thought you might say.
Both the frames have some heavyish pitting, and its boring me shitless working on them.
No wonder it has taken me so long to get them done.
I am inspired by the job on your's though mate :daumenhoch:

not hours, more like days buddy :LolLolLolLol:
I just got to thinkin if it's gonna be right then it needs to be just as shiny in all the nooks and crannies as well as all the main tubes..... no point goin half assed at it eh :daumenhoch:
Takin the time to do things like wrapping a piece of emory cloth around a thin knife to get in behind the headtube gusset makes all the difference I guess :daumenhoch:
-
ooh,dat nice.Seriously John, that is one stunning build, must be pleased as punch how it turned out.

Holy chromoly that is a lovely looking bike. You must be seriously happy with that.

Thanks guys... don't think I'll ever top this build.. fookin love it to bits :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Fantastic bike, and nice to see an early PL20 done so well with a great choice of parts. That one sets the benchmark for Redlines on here, better than when it left the factory :daumenhoch:

Yeh, tis strange for sure that ya don't see many on here. After my Moto One my first "proper" bmx was a Redline MXII back in 1980... and I've loved Redlines ever since. :smitten:
Here's my MXII which is built up just how I had it back then...
Don't think I'll ever part with either of these bikes :smitten:
