Title: My First Build Finished.....please be gentle!
Post by: stevesredvxr on April 24, 2010, 12:16 PM
Hi Everyone.

For me it started way back in about 1980 / 1981 when for Christmas my mum and dad (well ok santa) got me a Red and Chrome Team Murray.
Ok, not the best BMX in the world but my parents had 3 kids to buy for and money was tight back then.....but I loved it.
6 months later and some **** nicked it from the back garden........I was gutted but my dad said he would get me a new one.
Anyway some of my mates were getting drop-handled racers by this time and I was given the choice...........yep I got a racer.....big mistake!
The very next Xmas and BMX had took off big time and my mates were turning out on Xmas day with sparkling new Mongooses, GT's, Diamond Backs etc and
at this point I realised how big the mistake was that I opted for the racer.
Its something I had to live with as my parents wouldnt just buy me a BMX because everyone else had now got them.
Well now its about 84/85 and BMX Beat was in full flow and I just loved the programme......Pepi, Craig, Carlo etc....they were all my heroes.

Anyway, my mum came home from parents evening one night and although I was doing ok at school the teachers thought I could do better so my mum and
dad came up with a plan.......do better at school and we'll get you a BMX!
It was what I hoped for so gave it a shot......and in less than 6 months I had been put up to the top classes in both English and Maths.....Result!!

After watching BMX Beat for so long I really wanted a freestyle BMX like a Streetbeat....and then mum came home with something in the car for me....
An MT Racing Silverfox....not a freestyle bike but nothing to snub my nose up at really...
Absoluteley loved it!!
Tinkered with it for around two years when I made the 2nd biggest mistake in my BMX history.
I had seen a pair of trainers for 70 quid in the sports shop....and yes, youve guessed it, when some lad stopped and asked if it was for sale I said yes, for £70 it's yours!
2 months later when the trainers were sha**ed I realised gain I had made another wrong decision....but then girls and beer came along and that brings us to a few months ago.
I was at my mums and pulled out the BMX Beat video, watched it, then straight on ebay and bought the bike I always wanted....the StreetBeat.

This is how it came:

And this is how it looks now:

Ok, a big thankyou to Sam (Meticulous) for helping me with this build...without him it wouldnt be done!
Also big thanks to: Daz BMX, Eamonn, Sid1972 and not forgetting Del for the graphics...they look stunning thanks pal!
Ok I will post the parts list up in the next post but please let me know your thoughts on it, good or bad, and thanks for looking

Steve

Nice! Kermit seems to like it, too. Either that or he's just shaking his head, because you left the balls hanging out (under the saddle)  :-X

They are the tyres that it came with in the original photo........they are LHR Freestyle tyres.

Not sure if they are any good but as they came up nice and white once I'd finished with cleaning them then
I thought I'd keep em.

i was just asking as i'm after some white tyres but, for me, a tyre must have a skin/tan wall... thats why i don't like the new school tyres.

they did come up good though when cleaned 'em... was it a jif job?

No not Jif pal....
I first soaked them in the bath overnight with a bit of cheap bleach from ASDA.
Then I made a paste out of washing powder and a bit of water (think it was Bold....) and used a scrubbing brush  for a while.
Rinsed them off and hey presto.....nice white tyres again. Got to say I was impressed how well they came up....just look at the
state of them in the first picture!  :daumenhoch:
