I was thinking of doing london to brighton but if there's something else being organised here would be interested - would be a good day out

try and do at least one stupid thing a year for charity but last few have all involved walking/running/trekking and none of that is good for you

will keep watching this thread and see what comes up  :daumenhoch:

London to Brighton, now that sounds the one.

Imagine 50-60 Old/Mid schoolers riding in the midst of the normal schmoes. Imagine the attention we'd get.

I think they find us glamorous Ronnie!!

indeed lenny the spandex-clad road bike gimps probably wouldn't know what to make of it  ;D
would be a long day but the challenge of doing it on a bike with little wheels and no gears would make it easier to raise funds
apologies pickle wasn't trying to hijack the thread mate

just found this link - looks like you can choose from a bunch of charities, not just BHF which comes up for most google results
http://www.doitforcharity.com/difc-london-to-brighton-cycle-2011.aspx?c=65999&ad=charitypage

going to try and find out best way to get back though as my mrs doesn't drive, don't fancy doing the return leg much & bit wary of taking my bike on the train for the pikeys to pick over

that's the one I saw first but was originally trying to find an event that let people choose the charity
not fussy either way - but if there's a Rad element involved that's the one I want to go on  :daumenhoch:

gonna go and register now before I get me dinner on

if you do the BHF one (officially anyway) then they'll want you to give at least some of what you raise to them

from the BHF site....
"Do I have to fundraise for the BHF or can I choose a charity of my choice?
London to Brighton Bike Ride is owned, operated and paid for by the BHF. While some fundraising events are organised by corporate organisations enabling you to select the charity you wish to fundraise for (e.g. the Bupa Great North Run), we bear the expense of organising the Bike Ride. As such we ask that you do not fundraise for other organisations who have not contributed to these costs."

not sure which hospital you wanted to raise money for pickle but on that other site for the September ride there are a lot to choose from (is it on the list?)

Up for some rides this year, really good way of keepin fit and that feel good factor of achieving something and helping others out :daumenhoch:

Say, if anyone is interested, I should be doin the usual BHF ride along the leafy lanes/countryside/canals of Worcester in July, so more than happy/welcome any radsters to come and join in the 30 miles of fun! Will post details nearer the time.

I've signed up for the BHF website just in case that's the london to brighton one people want to go on, can't submit registration until March though and not guaranteed apparently...

If anyone can get 'priority registration' (can apply early) maybe they could submit a team entry? can be up to 20 people - put me down if you do as I'd love to do this (company I work for should match anything I raise up to £250 :)   )

cheers

pickle sir... can you let us know which event you're planning to ride on? happy to ride for your hospital or the BHF but didn't want to start anything separate  :daumenhoch:

as jamroll put it i reckon the bigger the group the more of a laugh it would be - might need a seat cover or something though, as gorgeous as it is my elina saddle combo might feel a bit uncomfortable after 54 miles

anyone know how easy it is to get bikes on a train back? (mrs griff doesn't drive so no chance of her collecting in the car)

clearly - would be a piece of piss on a bike with gears
the added challenge of using a completely inappropriate bike means I'll have a much better chance of raising more cash
(btw if you're following in a car feel free to offer us a lift back  ;D - I will give you some petrol money)

griff looks like the one organised through my hospital is around the first week in September.....not sure if it's the official ride with the heart foundation though  :-\

pickle mate would be more than happy to do it in september (although I'm not planning on doing it twice) can you get a bunch of us on the team?

Deffo  :daumenhoch:

Only condition on my side is that I have to be able to donate via an official charity-giving site (eg justgiving etc)
Reason is that the company I work for will match anything I raise for charity up to £250 (so I need to be able to document this properly)
I reckon the admin should be worth £250 though  ;)

Just need to sort out how to get back to Maidenhead after but plenty of time to sort that out

Let me know as soon as you have any more info - looking forward to this  :daumenhoch:

Just had a look on here again
http://www.doitforcharity.com/difc-london-to-brighton-cycle-2011.aspx
and St Marks comes up as one of the charities you can select via drop-down (under Hospitals)
If it makes it easier for you we could just register via that site (or if you can enter us as a team cheaper/free then that's an extra £25 I can put in the pot)

OK people it's on  :daumenhoch:

no going back now (at least for Rob & I) as we've registered for the ride

if you want to join the fun sign up here
https://www.doitforcharity.com/book-online.aspx?eid=1566&cid=4371
£25 reg fee and you're in  :daumenhoch:

then all you need to do is set up a page to collect the money (eg justgiving) and pledge to raise at least £100
should be pretty easy to raise this much as 54 miles on a hard plastic seat is gonna hurt your bum- on the plus side you should be able to find someone in brighton to put some cream on it afterwards

tell pickle when you've signed up so he can put you on the team list and get you a Team Jellyfinger Team St Mark's T-Shirt

or if you can't be bothered with all that just send a donation using the link(s) below  :daumenhoch:
http://www.justgiving.com/Projects-team-st-marks - pickle's page
http://www.justgiving.com/54milesonabmx - my page

get your names down - would be great to have a group of us down there and it's a great cause

cheers

come on man get your name down - you can take it easy on the downhill bits and push it up the hills  :D

I did buy a padded seat cover from poundland yesterday though - much as I (and everyone else on here) loves my elina saddle it's not the last word in comfort
will need modding though as it's far too short, but for a quid can just sling it in the bin when I get to the finish

just been onto google maps and put in the towns they tell you about - misses the start point (somewhere in sarf london) but this covers about 48 of the 54 miles

it's not that far

i have sent out the justgiving link at work but it is 7 months away yet so i don't expect anything till nearer the time to be honest.  i'm only putting in about 40 miles a week at the mo but will start to step that up once the clocks go forward  :daumenhoch:

will even try riding the assassin home from work as well to see how bloody hard it is to do 20 miles, let alone 54!  :crazy2:

I'm already doing 100+ miles a week

oh hang on that's in the car  ::) better get the mtb out the shed once the weather picks up and start riding to work again
I'm a bit of a slob, but since there's no time limit should be fine (at least it's better than running/trekking which I've been roped into over last few years and hurts like fook)
we could even find a nice pub on the way and stop for a ploughman's and a pint - might as well enjoy it eh?

we calculated that doing an average of 6mph it will take about 6 hours

will need to go a bit faster to achieve that time, at 6 MPH will take 9 hours (54 miles divided by 6MPH)
anyone know what the average cruising speed on a BMX is?

True enough, but the upside of this is that hopefully people will recognise that it's a very stupid idea and donate more readily (it's working for me so far up to £120 after a couple of days of annoying people, have had to come out of the BMX closet at work though  ::) )
I usually do one charity thing a year and every time it gets harder to find something that people think is a genuine challenge - on a grown-up bike with gears it would be a piece of pi55

btw I had a reply back from the organisers today - I asked about whether trains would allow bikes on return journey the next day
was told yes & that details would be posted out to us along with race numbers etc about 6 weeks before the event. Just thought I'd mention in case anyone was put off by not wanting to have to pedal back to London as well  :daumenhoch:

get your names down peeps!

given....

.. and very gratefully received!!  :4_17_5:
Thank you sir that was very kind of you, really appreciate the support  :daumenhoch: although it's some way off till the event any donations made go to the cause straight away, what's even better is that my employer will match the first £500 I raise (I won't be stopping there of course!)

Got the last bits for my bike today (thanks Sid they're fookin lovely now) so will be finishing that and will be adapting a number plate for the event - all who sponsor me will get their names on it. Let me know if you want 'Crooch' on it or your real name mate... I'm trying to organise putting the bike on display at work and getting some of the bigwigs to donate or pay more to get a logo on the plate - whatever it takes to bring in the money  :daumenhoch:

Best way to raise the most dosh though (and have a laugh) is to get some more peeps from here signed up - that way we can get money in from all over the place. This link http://www.doitforcharity.com/doitforcharity-cycle-ride-2011.aspx?c=4371&ad=charitypage should take you straight to registration to raise money for Pickle's hospital (which is a great cause) but if you want to do it for another charity there's loads to choose from at http://www.doitforcharity.com/difc-london-to-brighton-cycle-2011.aspx

Come on - sign up and let's take over Brighton in September  :daumenhoch: it's not THAT far

that's the spirit mate - if I were you I'd book the Monday off too (haven't decided if I'm gonna get digs or find a way to get back that night, but either way don't fancy being stuck at my work desk for 9 hours the day after with an arse that feels like I've just spent my first night in prison)

Add me to the list, think it's time to do something stupid  ;D

mate just sign up using the links, if you're riding for st.marks contact pickle who can sort you out a t-shirt  :daumenhoch:

cheers

great stuff mr level - now we just need to get a few more volunteers  :daumenhoch:
as it was nice yesterday I went for a blast outside on the haro - got plenty of strange looks but bike was rolling along nicely
apart from the seat issue I reckon it should be a great laugh.

just logged on to let people know that I had a reply back from the charity lady regarding wearing of lids...
"Thank you for your email.

We do ask that all cyclists wear their helmets at all times, however if you have people wanting to sign up that have strong objections to wearing a helmet they can sign a disclaimer to that effect and ride without one."

I would advise using some sort of arse protection however

Pickle how many have we got going now?

That's brilliant Rob, just need a few more idiots volunteers to sign up - btw do you think maybe it's worth starting a fresh thread on this? (currently at 6 pages so anyone unaware of this is going to have a bit of reading to do before they get to today....)

Sounds like there are some great plans afoot to raise awareness and we've still got plenty of time to get training
thought that I should probably split training like this to acclimatise - 50% pedalling on bike / 50% being kicked in the bum
