Been working on this idea for a while now and thought i would give you lot a sneak preview now the finish line is in sight. :daumenhoch:
I started off with a tatty, damaged and hubless set of early etched logo skyways which Scorcher Mick was kind enough to let go at a good price.

Then the unthinkable... turn away now if you are easily shocked ;D

Made a little jig for my router table
(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/P1010343.jpg)
The first trial to see how they would take the cutter. It cut lovely with no chatter or splintering :daumenhoch:

Final check of depth

The majority of the waste cut away

After shaping with a dremel sanding drum and some elbow grease

The finished rim once wet sanded and etched logo painted in
(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/2012-11-08140136.jpg)
Got some red anno suzue hubs off JT Racing and Del was kind enough to send me a few different sized decals to get the scale right inside the hub
(http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x455/oldschoolace/2012-11-08111256.jpg)
Laced them up tonight in a crazy pattern (spokes were too short ;D) just to see how they would take the tension. I actually shat myself nearing the end of the lacing as the rim was a real crazy shape but it trued up well and should be lovely when i lace them in a 3x pattern :daumenhoch:

Big thanks to Scorcher Mick, JT Racing and Del for helping me make this possible :4_17_5:
-
great workmanship there if only skyway would have thought of that earlier it would've really fubared acs z rims eh, nice one but i've seen loads of em ...............................not :LolLolLolLol:
-
I'm impressed :daumenhoch:
-
Great effort mate, top idea, loads of initiative too. Can't wait to see what happens when you ride on them.
-
probably should have painted the patent number yellow ! :LolLolLolLol:
great stuff! :4_17_5:
-
:LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol: fookin love it as you already know :4_17_5:
-
great to see that there are still some new idea's, that surprise us after all this time :daumenhoch:
how if the flex when it was just rim ?
and what about yellow spokes and nips ?
B 8)
-
Great work there bro, liking them a lot. You may get a lot of requests so keep them jigs at the ready :LolLolLolLol:
I have an old set of white you are free to do your 'unforgivable' on ;)
-
Cheers guys :daumenhoch:
Thought of both yellow and black for the spokes and nips Bendy but thought stainless would look a bit more old school. The Yellow was kinda hard to match as mags are a sort of bright egg yolk but i turned out plasticoat super gloss ral 1004 (i think it was) was a near perfect match :daumenhoch:
Cant really understand your other question Bendy? :-[
If i read it right.... the rim was surprisingly rigid without the 5 spokes, You could get a bit of twist on it if you tried, but not much
-
yup that was the answer to my question :D ;D
it's just that a normal metal rim doesn't flex (well hardly)
but a Z rim does
so i wanted to see where it fitted with out the spokes ;)
(5000 post mark)
-
congratz on the 5000th post b :daumenhoch:
-
Yeah to be technical...ish you could probably twist the rim out of true manualy about 16mm if you really went at it.
-

Just like a Z then yer? Would they stand up to hard riding bro?
-
I imagine they would perform very similar to a z rim. The thicknesses of material is similar. Even though i countersunk the nipple heads you can see the square part of the nipples only just clear the surface of the rim so these are probably a touch thicker if anything :daumenhoch:
-
Epic win
-
Wow what a result!, they look like you bought em new off the shelf! Top job fella :daumenhoch:
-
This is the best thread i have read, for a long time.

-
bof approves.....
Love stuff like this, I think everyone who has them Tuppaway 24"s should allow you to do the humane thing to their wheels

-
 Awesome!v :4_17_5: top skill's :daumenhoch:
-
absolutely amazing ./cant believe you thought of doing this and carried it off very well and it worked amazingly .suoperb initiative
well done

Top banana! They look factory. Great bit of engineering to figure out how to do it.
:4_17_5:
-
Sweet! :smitten:
-
That is absolutely brilliant :4_17_5: genius idea :daumenhoch:
My heart sank when I saw the first few pictures of them butchered, I definitely wasn't expecting that outcome  thread of the year :4_17_5:
-
Great work, that should be done to ALL skyways.
-
As sweet as...but bow did you drill the zpoke holes... ome on pleaze spill the beans!
-
Most of Ace's posts involve re-inventing the wheel but re-inventing the Tuff wheel is a really clever idea. Nice work fella. :daumenhoch: :4_17_5:
-
Great skills mate :4_17_5:
Doubt i would have the patience for that ::)
I have just modified a set of pro class rims by filling all the holes in !! :D
( joking ! :P )
-
Brilliant :4_17_5:
-
great idea , get ready to be swamped :LolLolLolLol:
-
just looked at thia again im amazed totally .best thread ive seen on rad in the last year or so for sure
-
I've a feelin a new job title will soon have to be thought of................ :daumenhoch:
-
Cool Idea and nicely done. I like it.
But I do have 2 questions ...
1- what is going on with the spoke pattern? How come you have 2 spokes from the same side of the flange next to each other on the rim?
2- I do like what you have done, but .... why? We all like the look of a skyway tuff but yours just looks like a spoked wheel. And it will still flex like a tuff, and the tire might pop off, and the brake wont work. It seems like a whole ton of effort for a novelty wheel. Wouldn't it have been much easier (and more functional) to paint a metal rim yellow and put a skyway sticker on it, like you did with the hubs? Or even just put a skyway sticker on a Zrim??
-
less fun doing that than destroying a tuff alex
-
Looking through some old mags, Skyway seemed to have plans to bring out a spoked wheel, maybe thats how it would have look had it happened...cool :daumenhoch:
-
The spoke holes took a bit of working out but in the end i just used two precisely cut peaces of oak. One i lay a 2h pencil on and ran round the rim whilst lay of a flat table then flipped for a mirror image on the other side of the rim. The hole spacing consisted of marking either side of the second block and moving along hole by hole. Once i got the width of the wood exactly right it was pretty easy :daumenhoch:
The spoke pattern is just something i made up last night as the spokes i had were a touch too short. They will be laced in a 3x pattern when the spokes arrive but i wanted to try, albeit with an odd lacing pattern to see if the rims could take the tension.
Painting a metal rim yellow and putting a Skyway sticker on it is in the realms of the pop tribute dude on ebay. ;)
-
what frame is that ??
-
Its a Batavus, will be built up in a deep blue for the budget build off ;)
-
That is ace work pal :coolsmiley:
Very innovative indeed. Like that frame also, not sure on the tyres though...... :crazy2:
-
This thread a sticky yet ? ::)
-
that's class.
love it :4_17_5: :4_17_5:
-
So Cool 8) :coolsmiley:
-
I chuffin love those dude . top work , How much would you need to do a set ? ;)
-
I'll have an OGK set in white please :4_17_5:
-
Its finding suitable donors that's the tricky bit. Cant go chopping up perfectly good wheels :daumenhoch:
-
Thats mad Clint... Interesting to see whats possible. Nice work
-
Wow :4_17_5:
I remember someone asking for cracked/broken skyways before MK12..I'm presuming it was you ???
Mad as a box of frogs :idiot2:..... but I love them dude :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
I loved the reply..."paint a metal rim yellow and add a skyway decal..far easier" :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol:
Far easier ..yes but nowhere near as fookin mental!!!!
Keep up the mad scientist stuff Radsters 8) 8) 8) 8)
-
I remember someone asking for cracked/broken skyways before MK12..I'm presuming it was you ???
Yeah that was me :LolLolLolLol:
I didn't think it would be so hard to find a set but i guess people just strip the hubs out and bin them if they are knackered :'(
-
top job!
-
Wow!! They look lovely...
fantastic!
Paul
-
Fantastic job great craftsmenship nice to see something different :4_17_5:
-
MENTAL :4_17_5:
Top work Clint 8)
that's the easy project out of the way ;)
Now I' ve a set of Araya Aero rims you can fix the ten leftover Skyway mag spoke/arms back into ,,, now we are talkin :D
-
Top job :daumenhoch:
I've wondered if it is possible to machine a recess in the rim and bond a aluminum braking surface onto a tuff.
-
Top job :daumenhoch:
I've wondered if it is possible to machine a recess in the rim and bond a aluminum braking surface onto a tuff.
wouldn't they flex and buckle the ally?
-
Should be pretty easy. You could get a ring waterjet cut and machining a slot for it shouldn't be too difficult. Just need the right glue :daumenhoch:
-
Whatever the pros & cons they look ace :4_17_5:
What sort of man hours we talking about start to finish ?
Presume pretty time consuming :)
-
Now all the jigs and fine measurements are done it would probably take between 4-6 hours to do a set, depending on the original condition of the mags :daumenhoch:
-
Ruddy awesome. The drilling for the spokes is far out. Well done. KUDOS.
-
I can't believe i missed this thread.Clint, they are amazing i am absolutely lost for words!I am sure your talents are wasted,a mind that could come up with that idea could surely make a car that runs on pi$$ or something?!It will be very interesting to see how they ride when built properly,if they are no worse than a zed then that is a fooking result! As others have said, best resto thread ever! Will you be using them on your budget build off bike? :daumenhoch:
-
Will you be using them on your budget build off bike? :daumenhoch:
Oh yeah! ;)
Cheers for the flattery Damo :)
-
that is an awesome bit of work...nice1 :4_17_5:

other than that lazy over sight they look pukka! ;D
-
Ha 4 pages in before someone mentioned that. :LolLolLolLol:
Its gone now in readyness of being laced properly :P
-
Keep us posted with pic updates as soon as the official lacing occurs Clint. :daumenhoch:
-
Nice work fella. :daumenhoch:
-
Bloody ell, thats just amazing, wish i had skills like that. They look class 8)

Awesome - if i tried that you'd have a pile of 5 fingers to go with the spokes...
-
fookin AWSOME mate :4_17_5: :4_17_5: :4_17_5: :4_17_5:
-
Amazing job! :daumenhoch: Absolutely love it!! :smitten: :4_17_5:

Whats the frame ?

The frame is a batavus :daumenhoch:

Very cool :daumenhoch:
-
You have to re-create that famous Z Rim pic now to prove Tuff Rims are just as good. :daumenhoch:
-
:LolLolLolLol: fook that!!! although a trip to the states to find an appropriate street wouldn't be too bad ;)
-
They look fantastic laced Clint. :daumenhoch:

Sooo. No one yet asked a price on you doing a set yet? ^"^
Looks awesome
-
These look amazing.

You can blame the greedy bastards at Photobucket for that :2gunsfiring_v1:
