Title: North Region Old School 2013
Post by: James Nada on January 30, 2013, 08:49 PM
Is anyone planning on racing old school in the north region this year?  So what are you plans

Racing OS?
Switching to Masters/Vets/Cruiser?
Doing OS and NS?
Whining about the fact you need a race licence and not bothering?

It'd be nice to OS get a couple of gates each time - is there any new blood out there?

Dunno, but I'm sure it won't be too long.

North meeting is 4th Feb - dates should be out very soon after that. Regionals can't clash with nationals, so have a look at the list of nationals on BCF website if you want to work out when you won't be doing a regional :daumenhoch:

But don't book any holidays round those dates as they will probably change if the needs of the bmxilliate change.

True, if any of the chosen few need an extra day's practice at a euro race then all other dates can be moved at short notice, which is very bad form in my opinion.

10 rounds seems a lot. And squeezing into a 4 month period too.

Still, it leaves plenty to choose from if one can't make some of the dates.

Barnard Castle and Hartlepool. Yikes.

Hopefully Hartlepool will have a new start hill by then. If not I'll be on a KX125.

A better representation of the North Region for a change...  apart from Crewe, which is in Wales.  ;D

Mid-lancs 21st April now on 14th.

This works out well for me, so I'm quite happy.

ok, just to upset you all now.....I am looking to change old skool racing in the north this year!!

Heres the plan:

Old Skool will be an open/fun category.  BC membership will not be required, but entry into oldskool will not be valid for Brits qualification or for BC Ranking.

£5 entry, all the money goes to host club and they will give you a medal or sweetie bag, same as the novice classes.  Each event will be separate with no series points.
(Depending on Numbers you may be mixed with 18+ Novice for the racing)

What do you think?

Before 2009-ish (before Old School was "official") Moley used to keep track of the points and updated a table on one of his website.  I think that would still work (assuming Moley is still alive and willing - otherwise someone else could do it).

ok, just to upset you all now.....I am looking to change old skool racing in the north this year!!

I think this sounds great.  This could really help get Old School numbers back where they should be (3+ gates!).

One question though:  If a rider with a licence/membership wants to race say, Masters and Old School,  will this be allowed?  I expect there will be quite a few who would want to do this.

Cheers

If someone wants to unofficially maintain series standings this is fine.  I can provide the data, I just wont be able to publish it with the main series.  I will still publish the event results.

If you have the necessary membership, no reason why you cannot ride both.  This is where I need to be careful about how the race is registered to ensure you are not riding novice and expert.  The model is based on events where BC run 'open' SX events at the indoor.  If they can run an open event restricted to a certain level of rider I should be able to run one subject to a type of bike.

And its hoped that the clubs will find the extra income helpful.

Event has been registered and approved with Old SKool as an Open Class

https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/events/details/87605/The-North-2013---Round-1

You can enter online, or on the day.  Charge will be £5 either way.  You can enter Expert classes as well (although if you do these are £10 per-reg or £12 on the day)

If you didn't race last year it would be helpful if you entered online for the first event so I can get the computer updated - last thing I want is the first event to face massive delays like Goldcoast last year.

My understanding is that it's an open class in terms of ability (i.e.  you don't need a licence) but is restricted to OS Legal bikes.

Personally I'd like the restriction to move a bit and reflect what people are building these days - say, anything pre 2000.  It'd retain the correct spirit of racing and increase the number of potential riders.

was going to try to do a few rounds this summer as the new format suits my limited resources , great job by the way to those involved with sorting this out for the OS racers :daumenhoch:,

there was a bit of a debate the other year about people riding OS on bikes that didn't fit the rules or rather as said the spirit of OS , the rules were always bent a little bit but the advantages were miniscule so  it was down to the riding ability or lack of  ;D     of the riders rather than how good the equipment is ,   i think the  " unofficial " rules of 1"headset ,  caliper/ single mounting point brake and i think date of pre 92 ?   (unsure on that)  keep things grounded so to speak by limiting the available equipment meaning there has to be a little bit of commitment from the riders to meet the criteria and the idea of racing Old School bikes, as said though this also limits the amount of riders willing to get involved,

1" headset n quill stem n caliper brake (non-canti/vbrake, unless early group one haro,) :daumenhoch: thats it i reckon, its not difficult. if the bike you have doesnt fit criteria, why race in an o/s class? if it keeps getting watered down i'tl end up:

so whats the general views on late 90's early 00's rims?   actually ran similar age rims the other year , just pulled the stickers off , thus avoiding the fuzz  :police: :LolLolLolLol:

cash is tight as always and the set i have came in cheap , i've built them up to run on the mcs with a view to riding the track in the summer, keep fit, avoid the missus when she's on one , get some fresh air,

now with the possibility of  hitting up a few rounds this year,  is it more important to get the gate numbers up for the OS class if only for a few rounds ,   bending  the rules a little as everything else meets the suggested criteria ,   or am i going to get fuzzed by the  :police:   :LolLolLolLol:

And so the changes/cancellations begin!!!

Crewe on 14th April cancelled.
Mid-lancs 21st April now on 14th.

This works out well for me, so I'm quite happy.

(Oh, congratulations on Saturday's win Cotty. From where I was it looked close at the front.)

is this still the case? Coppull on 14th?

Yup!

I've just got back from the States.

I'll start a riders list as soon as I get a few spare minutes.

I dont think I could make 21st at Coppull anyway and I dont think the 14th is any good me either.  So I'll check what I've got on.

As for OS legal rides...............The whole point of getting this new relaxed dispensation from the North Region was to revive OS racing Ooop north.   If you just rode NS then you should have to buy a license because it isn't in the spirit of the dispensation.   If you want to race NS then buy a license, race another class and bring another bike or ride you OS bike in that class.     You can't have it both ways.    The dispensation is just for OS.......nothing else.............otherwise every license paying racer would get the hump.

1" headset (quill) and Centrally mounted caliper brake (pitbulls allowed).   That includes any ride upto mid 90's when 1" HS and Caliper brakes were phased out.   24"ers allowed.  No converted NS bikes and definitely no NS bikes allowed to race EVER.  No exceptions.    The dispensation for no license is for an OS Class.   If people start turning up with NS thinking they'll get a cheap race then whats the point.    The dispensation is there to make sure we stay separated from the normal racing.   So if that means people have to race some sketchy OS racer with no brakes when wet then so be it.    Nobody should take the piss on the rules.  There are plenty of OS racing bikes out there.  If you aint got one then buy, borrow or steal one.  No excuse to turn up on a NS ride or MTB (unless its a funky OS one).    Choppers should be allowed too!!!!  :)

I didn't think I could make the 21st (original date) because I have a christening and another do on another sunday in April.

Just checked on't Facebook and the christening is on the 14th and the other do (Beery weekend) is at the end of April.

So the 21st would have been okay but the 14th is definitely out.

Seriously, How many "christenings" have you been to in the last couple of years? Are you a secret vicar?

And Coppull is on the 14th - for sure.
