Title: Any Unannounced Newbie's On Here?
Post by: Retrodan72 on October 23, 2014, 09:20 PM
Ok, so it's come to our attention this week that there are a few of you guys mostly Newbie's that just lurk about the forum, and miss out on all the good stuff going on.

I'm guessing that this may be due to the following:

• Finding the forum difficult to navigate.
• Struggling to upload images.
• Scared of asking daft questions (there's no such thing as a daft question)
• Feeling intimidated by existing, more knowledgable members (ALL members are equal here)
• Unsure how to obtain a Site Supporters Tag
• Worried that your low-end BMX won't compete with higher-end build (a BMX is a BMX and all are welcome)
• All of the above

Well, now is your opportunity to speak up (in private) by pm'ing myself with any concerns or issues you may have with getting to grips with  :radbmxsmilie: and how to get the best out of it, ultimately, how to get the maximum enjoyment out of it.

Your questions or whatever will remain private between ourselves, and hopefully, I can steer your way into the public forum, and get more involved.

Just recently, a member joined and contacted me with some of the issues listed above. Many pm's were exchanged and now he's on his 2nd build and posting regularly on the forum, and enjoying the various topics and threads posted.

This is an amnesty if you like,

ITS UP TO YOU NOW LADS AND LADIES

Dan I'm new to the forum and feel that members on here have too much banter, too much craic and seem to not take this forum serious enough :yahoo_silent:

What would be great is if there were regular rides, some private skatepark hires so I could try and get into riding again without being embarrased and what would be brilliant is if we could all meet up in the summer and have a massive pish-up and celebrate all things BMX for two days

If you could fix these items for me I'd be less shy and contribute :-[

Oh, and ban that fat kid Ed209 for cyber-bullying me on here

But seriously, there is no better forum to ask questions on and join in one of the rides so you don't feel daft riding a kids bike in public, so come on in, the water's great kids :2funny: :coolsmiley:

Yes mate, you need to obtain a site supporters tag in order to use the sales/wanted section.

Hi dan. We exchanged comments earlier on FB. RADBMX is a great organisation with people contributing to its success for the love of bmx which most people will not dispute. Most criticism for the website sometimes get overlapped with its content which I think is confused with the mechanics. People who generally moan about this use a mobile device (me included). For people to say well if you can't be arsed to get lap top PC dont bother using it then I feel are wrong. More and more people are moving to mobile and laptop pc are very much like a landline telephone everyone needs one but get used rarely. I believe if a competitor develops a mobile equivalent the usage of your site will slowly slip away. While you have the market share and expertise in this field it has to be developed into the current requirements for a lot of your users. ie. An APP these aren't as detailed as the main site but are user friendly on a mobile device. This is only my opinion but get the feeling a lot of others feel the same but get involved in slagging the site in general.
I wish you all the best in the future.
Jim

Hi Jim, I hear you, but at the minute things are what they are. I have been a RAD member for over 6 years, but only really active for about 4. I have used a PC in the early years of me logging on, and an iPhone for the past 2 - I really can't see much difference other than screen size , obviously, and tapping out a message rather than typing. If anything, I prefer to use my phone, probably as I'm used to it now (I've no pc anymore), and it means I can log on at any time, anywhere.

I don't really think (as I'm a technophobe, and not clued up on apps etc) what benefits members will get if there was an app available. Maybe it's just me, but I like the standard forum layout and format, I don't like change.

I accept that we need to move forward, and cater for the crowd, this is why the FB is still being run (I very rarely use it myself). But there is so much that the FB page can't provide, that the forum can, tech stickies and bike reference for example.

Also, the forum occasionally gets highlighted as being quiet, so I/we try to do what we can to generate activity and keep the forum busy - this is where it all began after all. There are a lot of people without FB accounts that rely on RAD for their regular BMX fix.

I guess, it's a personal preference. Some like the simplicity of bring able to post and upload pics directly to FB (these posts and pics will be gone within hours), thus us just laziness IMHO, and some people prefer the community feel of a forum and being part of a Team.

Nobody's right, nobody's wrong, this is how things are, and will remain.

I'm glad you've registered and posted though Jim, enjoy your time here on  :radbmxsmilie:

Hi mate, when you go into a section on the forums at the top of the list of topics is a "start new topic" button. Unless you are trying to use the marketplace to buy or sell anything and then you need to be a site supporter :daumenhoch:

Hello - registered a few weeks back but not had a propper chance to browse the forums.

Really looking forward to spending more time on here as just looking to start my first build.

I'm essnetially old school - usedto ride from about 82-85. My bikes at the timewere and Pro Star factory frame and forks which I later upgraded to Torker Pro X.

Ideally I'm looking to build a Pro X but have got me head around the reality that these are hard to come by.

Secondly I'd like to build a Mike Biff PK Ripper, white with blue decals, white Z-Rims etc as per Mike Buffs old Ripper before he cnaged to red and black colourway.

Thirdly a Kuwahara Nova or Redline MXii or Pro-Line.

All of the above with NOS parts or a near to as possible.

So thanks for having me and mentioned above looking forward to interacting with more of you guys soon..

Big ups to all the lifers and old school fiends..

Hi John, welcome to RAD.

Start a topic in tech and restoration with pics of your bike as it is, and what your plans are with it, if you've any questions about it, just ask, there's plenty of knowledge on here.

Also, look in the museum section on here under Falcon Pro, some builds done already may give you some inspiration.

Welcome to RAD mate, you are in the right place!
If you look in the mid school section you will see a stunning MORALES build just completed by midschooljon. Richard (Chubby) also has a lovely MORALES build which is shaping up nicely. Place an ad in the Wanted section, you may get a reply. Bmxmuseum.com would probably be a good place to look for something like that...

Hi. Newbie here from London but residing in North East. Had a Super Burner in the 80s that my 13 year old self thought would look better as a fake Diamondback 😀. Stripped the gold paint off and spent all my hard earned Saturday job money on upgrades to pretty much everything but the frame......which was clearly not a Diamondback 😀. Now aged 44 I've purchased a Diamondback Reactor that I'm doing up when I have time.

Used to ride Kingshill BMX track in Hayes back when national meets were still there. We had a cool bike shop in town called Mal Rees. Anybody else hail from that area and recall that shop?

Looking forward to using the site and looking at everyone's rides. Thanks for having me!!

New to this, I rode from 96 to 2003 on Hoffman Taj which I still own and have a few more... not sure if Mid-school is popular on here? Going to MK to meet Mat Hoffman in Aug. Thanks Dave.

looking to rebuild or just get myself a tribute to my old bike that I swapped  (foolishly  :crybaby: ) for a rubbish mountain bike back in 1990!!!

this is all in and around London WC1 where we lived

details (from memory...)

Torker 280X frame /Bottema street park forks
CW freestyle bars/Oakley or Mushrooms with Doughnuts/stem with Potts mod/dia compe mx all round
Black Skyway Tuff IIs shod with with a whitewall on the back and a knarler knobbler on front
kashimax aero with fluted post/Suntour main ring with Shamano pedals/standard crank
back pedal brake with where anchored with MX seat post clamp

if you have seen this bike or any combo of parts it may still be alive

Merry Christmas guys im Phil i was put i touch with this site after i put an advert on gumtree fpr my Haro freestyler sport of the age im trying to ascertain im thinking its an 88 but cannot be sure the stamp on bottom was trying to be security minded my cousin whom i inherited the bike from had put his name and postcode stamp in via a letter stamping kit which goes directly over the serial numbers is there any other way of finding out the actual model i have im looking to sell or restore also but im outta my depth please help Phil !x
Title: Re: Any Unannounced Newbie's On Here?
Post by: Spen69 on December 15, 2016, 07:04 AM
Welcome Phil. If you post a picture of the bike up, a pic of the serial number area and measure the top tube from center of the seatpost tube to center of the headset tube it will probably take one of the Haro fans on here about a minute to work out exactly what model it is mate  :daumenhoch:

From then on it's a slippery slope unless you go for a survivor look and just clean it, strip & re-grease it, pump up the tyres and ride it like you stole it  :coolsmiley:

Hi all
Just joined today after discovering this site whilst hunting down a mountain bike for my lad on eBay. Got side tracked by bmx's that kept appearing, and after further research about old school bmx's a load of memories about brands came flooding back. Of course nothing I could afford circa 1984, I started with a basic red burner from my mom's catalogue which I paid for myself with my paper round money!  :)  I then spec'd it up bit by bit before buying a Reynolds 501 chromoly frame set before swapping it for a racer in '86  :-[
Anyway I just bought a team Puch freestyler on eBay which is in a bit of a state from 1986 so looks like I've found something to do apart from finishing my house off.. Not sure the wife realises what's up ahead...
Great to be here,
Dom.

Newish to the forum, but not to RAD itself. I joined last year, but have only just got round to venturing into the unknown. I've found a few really helpful tips, but finding it difficult to navigate using a "smart" phone. As they say... the phone is only as smart as the person using it.

Hi all,
Just joined and thought i would introduce myself.
My name is John from Melbourne Australia and am an old school BMX lover.
I collect bikes and parts from the 80's and 90's. The brands that i collect are mainly Haro, Redline, GT, Hutch, General, Torker SE and Skyway.
I do like other brands, but i think that i need to complete the 30 odd that i have at the moment.
I am also a member of OZBMX and BMX Museum and hope to meet like minded people on here.
Cheers

Hi everyone. I think I registered back in 2014 so it's about time I introduced myself! I had an Ammaco Silver Star in the early 80s but longed initially for a DB Silver Streak, then a TA and then a Changa! I've got a few bikes - a couple of survivors and a couple I've built myself. However, none of them is of the quality I regularly see on here. Cheers Charlie

In the early 1980s I had a Raleigh Super Burner but really wanted a Mongoose or Diamondback. Now I am 46 and have got back into BMX after over 30 years out! I have bought myself a new school 2016 Haro Interstate. I don't really have a dream bike now but I do like the new Haro Dave Murray Tribute bike. How about you?

Hey

My name is Mish, living in Northampton UK and I have just joined the site properly.  I have finally bought my dream bike as kid, a Mongoose Californian.  I had a Grand Prix as a kids but this is what I really wanted.

I am not a newbie to bikes and resto... I am n+7, a mix of road, mtbs, inc 2 retro mtbs that I built up
.
Looking forward to chatting and getting advice on how to tweak my Mongoose to how I want it

Cheers

Thanks!  I've got about 9 different builds going on at the moment but the last one I put my hands on is a 1984 1st gen Haro Master I'm building to replace the last one I had that I sold back about 10 years ago (which I've been regretting ever since, as I sold my 1st gen Sport then too  :idiot2: :idiot2: ).

Most of them are project bikes that I've had on the back burner anywhere from 2 to over 20 years! I've been downsizing since around 2012 as my first 15 years of collecting got WAAAAY out of control!  None of them are anywhere close to completion.  The closest is the 1st gen Master as I've had parts sitting around waiting to build another for some time. I'll post pics of some of them here soon. Here's what I'm currently working on at any given moment:

1983 Mongoose Californian
1984 1st gen Haro Master
1984 3rd gen Haro Sport
1984 GT Pro Performer
1984 GT Mach One
1984 GJS Freestyler
1985 SE Quadangle Freestyler
1985 MCS Styler
1986 Vector Freeplay
1989 Haro Master

Seems like the best way to play it, especially with todays Bmx market. Grab bits as they pop up which are affordable and eventually you will get them finished. Good luck with the builds  fistblump

Thanks.  In the meantime, here's the Master as it sits now.  Some of the bits are just placeholders until I can source the right parts like the stem, bars, grips, and headset. Labor of love they are!
