Hi all,
So after completing a GT mid project and with a mid Powerlite in progress I decided I fancied something 80s. After a little ebay action I found this locally and then won the auction.
It seems like quite a rare thing? I think it a 1985? UK made? and sold as frame and fork only?
The long term plan is to have frame, fork, bars and post re chromed.
It also wants new wheels as the skyways are warped, would modern skyways be sacrilege?

I'd be tempted to try a citric or oxalic acid bath before even contemplating a rechrome, shouldn't hurt the decals and sometimes the rust isn't as bad as you think. A rechrome is always fooking expensive and it's only original once
Either way I'd bin the seat post, original or not >:D

Quite a rare frameset....you don't see them every day.
What Griff said regarding the awful seatpost, bin it and get a new one either straight or layback!
Being as it is a race bike tuffs are a little out of place on there, although lots of racers used tuffs. Regarding repop parts, the argument goes on and on....
If you are going to ride the bike, new tuffs are the best option if you want to use mags...they will certainly be cheaper than period Skyways or rims.

So I'm going to strip it and try and acid bath, what's best to try first citric or oxalic? Best value on eBay?
Also what's best way to do it? Do I literally need to submerge it? And for how long? Or would it be better to brush it on?
What's best to use to bathe it in? Not sure it would do the tub in the bathroom much good.

Citric all the way. Dilute in water and leave for as long as it takes, all it can do is remove rust it won't hurt anything else.

Our well known padset man has the template for these too if you need pads. I managed to find somebody with an original set and got pics of them off to him.... he's done a white set and a black set for me now :daumenhoch:

It's not mine mate. I was just after the padset template details so I could get some made for my Birmingham WHEELS builds; YES Racing sponsored the WHEELS team back in the day so the team had a fair few bits and bobs with YES logos. I've sourced a YES helmet and have got pics of a WHEELS race bike with YES decals.

I'm quite please with the result, its been layer in wax to stop it rusting any further. I was planning on going at the worst of what's left with a dremel type polisher (soft pad) and auto sol. But I really want to get re chromed. I'm going to try and get some quotes.
I'm not planning on selling it but can anyone give me an idea of what the approximate value would be if I had it rechromed and new graphics?
Does anyone know how many of these still survive in the UK?

A re-chrome would cost in the region of 200-250 quid but that wouldn't necessarily add the same value to the f&f... if that's what you mean. :daumenhoch:

Its more a case of does the frames age and rarity warrant the cost of the re chrome. To be honest I don't plan on parting with it so if the frame and fork are worth the equivalent of the cost of the re chrome and graphics id be happy.

A de-chrome, a re-chrome and a set of stickers is gonna cost you in the region of £300 and i can't see the f&f being worth that much in all honesty... but if it's a keeper and you want it show standard then go for it mate. :daumenhoch:
If you're looking to keep costs down though maybe go for a nice white powder coat... reckon that'd look nice myself like. :)

Not easy...
In total I contacted around 15 companies around the UK to get quotes. I wont go singling companies out as I don't want to go upsetting anyone but I was very difficult to find a company who were interest in doing the job for a reasonable price.
Many didn't even reply to my request for a quote which was kept simple with clear pictures,Several of the ones that did respond wanted upwards of £400.
I did find a place in the end up north (I'm in West Sussex), If all goes well with them I will be happy to reveal cost and company name, fingers crossed

So the frame and forks have now returned from the chromers, it was around an 8 week turn around and cost approximately £260 with postage costs.
Not having had this done before I wasn't sure what level of finish to expect considering to chrome was quite poor (although the citric acid bath made a huge difference). Im reasonably pleased with the final finish, any opinions??

Did you have the original chrome stripped off or did they chrome over the existing chrome ?

Yep they stripped the old chrome and then rechromed
