Title: Ramps at MK 16
Post by: splodge on March 03, 2016, 07:30 AM
The last couple of years have really been amazing with the ramps, that 8ft quarter pipe is so old school and I look forward to riding it all year. However last year as there was a small half pipe & spine there were quite a few scooters, often getting in the way of us oldies & I think even putting a hole in one of the ramps at one point.

If Radi Ramps is still happy to supply ramps (i really hope so!) could we just have the 8ft quarter & the trick ramp we had back in MK14? This is more of an old school set up that caters for our needs & may mean there's fewer kids on scooters? It would also free up a bit of space for a the odd cherry picker & flatlanding radness & also less work setting up & taking down. Please make ramps happen again this year  :smitten:

Whats your thoughts fellow ramp riders?

The ramps will be there (i believe) and hopefully there will be a ban on scooters.

What Pickle said. Rather have a good setup and define who an use them than just build a setup that no one wants to ride.

Good stuff...this was perfect, maybe even without that spine, just a kickturn ramp & that quarter, warm sunny day, heaven..   :smitten:

TwoBobRob chat with ED209

We should just go for the big quarter plus one other obstacle as just discussed

- Big quarter plus flat bank would have the most appeal in my eyes

I would agree
Against common thinking I would suggest perhaps we don't put them opposite one another
But we can decide that on the day

- agreed ... next to each other maybe

Correct
People can session either that way

- quarter exactly where it was last year .. 8ft flat bank with platform to the right of the quarter where the 4ft quarter was

Yep

- distance jump ramp and grind box on the flat

... so there you have it folk ... the volcano and 4ft quarters are out ... 'big wedge ramp / flat bank with platform on' is in ... next to each other so two people can ride at once ...

Scooters are only allowed on if theres no BMXs riding - same as last year  :daumenhoch:

GOTS TO GIVE THA PEOPLEZ WHAT THEY WANT!

Good work Ed and TwoBob :daumenhoch:

The two side by side means two at a time can ride. Couldn't ask for better :coolsmiley:

(I did love that volcano though, once my balls had grown big enough to tackle the bugger :2funny: )

Rob just reminded me that we had to repair holes made by scooters last time ... so its big fat NO TO SCOOTERS

Its a BMX event :-) I will bring a bike that anyone on a scooter can have a go on if they like  :daumenhoch:

Hi everyone.

I don't know how good your memories are of the flat bank from MK14 but I found it to be a little steep for kickturns. My instinct is to cut you lot a fresh one a little mellower than it's predecessor.

Opinions please?

Yes I remember it Rob, agreed it was a tad steep

Maybe not as much of an issue if it's wider ... persoanlly I found it fine ... but I guess we should go for the classic 80 wedge ramp angle

This rides nice, this is my ramp on my front drive

About 3 1/2 ft tall, 8 ft wide, perfect for kickturns & small trick ramp tricks. I toyed with the idea of an 8ft quarter pipe but though it was just to dam dangerous & will end up with broken bones, i've only had a few cuts from this & my kids use it as a den when im riding.

Splodge - regarding the angle, your ramp is pretty much what I'm imagining in my head for MK16.

I tried a few 540 kickturns on my ramp and my back wheel let go each time which is what led me to consider a mellower ramp.

Obviously I'll wait for a few more opinions before I take saw to wood but yours looks to be better suited to the job.

I fancy 4ft high and 12ft wide. Plenty of room for the doubles contest....... :D

Still buzzing after an amazing weekend! Just wanted to say a huge thank you to Rob & Ed & everyone else that sorted the ramps, best set up we have had as a couple of riders could ride at the same time, lovely long bank for kickturns though the wall got in the way for some hanging over the edge ramp stalls! Me & Aggie (white Haro sport) are going to work on a few double tricks for next year, so wish we tried a double air, we were so close to giving it a go but there was always lots of people watching!

Mary really enjoyed it, you made her feel very welcome & loved telling me you made her a cup of tea! Shes also keen to learn a few kickturns & small ramp tricks ready for next year so lets see what happens  :D

Thanks again for setting up when the weather wasn't to good & hope you got away before the rain on Sunday. Cant wait to see ya next year rampsters...  :daumenhoch:

I must admit the rain tried it's best to stop us riding and at times it did, but there were people on them all afternoon having a go. I spent a bit of time on the track this year as my son Logan was with me but we had a couple of sessions on the ramps with the Usual Suspects when we'd all finally arrived - not as much as the previous years but we still rode between the rainfall!

There were two standout moments at MK for me and both were at the ramps. The first was my 5yr old carving round the kick-turn ramp for the first time and how everyone riding was being patient with him as he tried.  He even fell off and another kid there picked his bike up and was asking him if he was ok  :D

The second was walking over to the gazebo with a burger to have a chat with Bob and Ed then Bob Haro came over and sat there chatting with us..... very surreal! Gotta say thanks to John Griff for taking a pic of me, my son Logan and the father of freestyle himself :coolsmiley:

So once again Rad min and Bob at Radii Ramps, we thank you for an awesome event and hope we can all do it again next year fistblump

:LolLolLolLol: Its really strange, Matti Hemmings, the pro flatlander that was there & arguably the UK's No 1, i've chatted with him loads of times as he rides in Bristol, he said its worth me entering a comp in Brum later in the year, 'your having a chuffin giraffe' I said! he then said that everyone is doing the spinny tricks that he does, people are just as blown away with older stuff life cherry pickers etc as no one has seen them, they are lost to history. Its an interesting point, often a group of lads will gather around when im doing simple front hops, i can do as many as i like & they cant believe it & ask how is it done, the most simplest trick that i learned when i was about 10 & it still gets a crowd. For me the stuff around 88/90 is what i want to do, i stopped riding in 88 when i joined the Royal Tank Regiment so thats the goal for next year, hitch hikers, McCircles, pinky squeeks, lets get it on. Mat Dyer (who was also there) is also a great rider & does the kind of riding i want to do but hes had a few injury's lately. At the end of the day its just a laugh playing about.

Hi chaps.

Good weekend eh?

Just clear one thing up;  we have a limited budget for ramps so each year we look at how the previous year went, feedback and what we think the following year might require. Ed and I had a few chats and along with forum participation this years format was decided.

Except for the wallride.

This was a bit of a last minute affair as it was a Radii freebie just to shut Ed up really. You all know how he bangs on about things.....  :LolLolLolLol:

He subsequently blamed Lenny of course  :Aresehole:.

Anyhoo.. This became the subject of some debate as in order to place the wall in such a spot that it rode ok would stop people from kickturning right up there on the lip and would rule rampstalls out completely. I ended up taking the decision to compromise so the majority of people could have some fun at the expense of a trick or two for some.

It seemed like everyone understood on the day and thankfully the wallride got a lot of use over the weekend so I felt like the decision was fair.

However, as the kickturn ramp was such a huge success we will have course be sure to add another freestanding one to the itinerary for future events.

My ramp highlight of the weekend aside from Splodge who appeared to have rode every minute of every hour both days, was James White enjoying a kickturn session riding that Survivor Hutch. That kinda summed up what MK should be for me.
