Do you take some of the guts out when converting to freecoaster as I have a Peregrine Master with half a coaster coming to me and may need some bits? ;)
-
Nice to see some new builds on here,I used to have a set of white 48 hole ZeDS with ACS hubs, rear freecoaster, I didn't put them on a bike and had trouble selling them as I remember as everyone wanted the 36 hole ones.
I think I sold them for about £50,this was in the days of affordable BMX building lol
-
Also had a set of 48h z rims , seems no one really likes them a few years ago ....
Hows the frame stander conversation going on ?
-
Guys, back on this now....and starting the build thread from the concept...
This build comes after completing some pretty stock builds in ‘17 - a Catalogue 85 Haro Master, a yellow GT Pro Performer and an Eddie Fiola Cherry Red GT Pro World Tour - none of which, whilst great builds to have in my little piece of BMX Freestyle museum, really excited me (except the neon green Master. And the yellow Performer. And the Fiola rep!).
I'm always collecting frame and fork sets when I see them come up and can afford them, so I have a few lined up at home, but none really fired me up to build them - in the main, they look so good just as framesets, unless I could do something really special with them, I felt it was best just to leave them and admire them until something sparked an idea of a build or money allowed....
I'd been looking around the forums here and in USA while I was building my GHP Trix but couldn't really see anything that was either available within budget (I really wanted to build a Free-Agent Freeflight) or again that fired me up that I didn't have.
Whenever I have a bit of spare time I'd flick through the pages of Freestylin’ magazine for inspiration up to the end of when I stopped riding, which was the end of 85/early 86. Once I stopped riding I stopped buying all the BMX mags as well – but since I've been back in the scene I've also targeted to complete my collection of Freestylin’ magazine and that's where the idea for this build came from, inside cover of the December 86 edition.
-
The ACS advert grabbed my attention straight away - firstly, the colours - in the main, the vivid blue bike with white decals and accent parts, the blue sky and the sea – it just summed up California and freestyling / BMX riding for me. Secondly, the forks – the freestyle versions of Landing Gear, one of my favourite parts, and thirdly, the trick - A Miami Hopper, which was the last trick I learnt before hanging up my Vans, and lastly the advert, it looked so rad, not corny like some of the adverts of the time – moody teens, neon lighting, breakdancers, hi tops and teenage girls with tight perms and pop socks straight out of Pretty in Pink!
-
So, the bike.....
The bike as Fred Blood rode is really a mutant made up of an 85 SE Quadangle frameset with Landing Gear freestyle forks and parts from, in the main, a 85 GT Pro Freestyle Tour. With ACS parts added in for the advert. Pretty cool really, none of us ran stock catalogue bikes bitd.
The Quadangle frame is an ’85 chromoly version, where the rear down tubes continue past the seat mast onto middle of upper tubes. This is my favourite shape of the Quad, the earlier models that have the rear down tubes welded into the seat mast gives the Quad a ‘too high’ look for me. This is more like most of the bikes of the era which had lower seat mast tubes. Interestingly, in ’86, it looked like SE had dropped the Quad Freestyler from their range – we all know freestyle wasn’t dying away, perhaps the Quad Freestyler just wasn’t selling well at the time – there certainly was lots of competition in the market at that time.
The forks are the freestyle version of the SE Landing Gear forks, where SE welded the fork leg off-cuts from the bottom onto the tops to make little platforms - hardly usable for any trick, the balance position is way off, but look so frigging strong. As a note, I always thought they were called Standing Gears, but I’ve never seen any decals showing that.
The ACS parts where the Z48s, ACS Freecoaster, ACS Rotor and locking freestyle levers.
The GT Pro Performer parts were the GT Freestyle Bars, Gen 1 front and rear standers, seat post and seat clamp and GT Shinko tyres. Awesome in blue.
Dia-compe and Suntour make up most of the rest....
-
Looking forward to seeing this done :4_17_5:

So, here's the frame and fork set back from SBD. I lined it up against the 84 Quad Freestyler to show what I was saying re seat mast height and rear down tube positions.
-
As always, I'm working on getting some better shots of the frame and forks outside - I got SBD to refinish it in the GT Maui Blue as the advert and it looks awesome in daylight....
-
Frame looks fantastic, i didn't even realise the differences in the frames, thanks for that lesson too! All in the details as usual... :daumenhoch:

Can’t wait to see this are you going to re create the pose in the advert when complete 👍

loving this thread so far
I've always called them forks standing gear

Love it - moved the thread to Tech/Resto (will be keeping tabs on this as it progresses! :smitten: )
-
love a story like this with a build.
can't wait for the 28h coaster hub conversion 8)
-
So, part of the build is the conversion of a 28h to 48h coaster hub shell. I'd spent ages trying to find one of the Suntour 48h coasters and wasn't really getting anywhere with WTB adverts on all the forums until I had an offer from a flatlander rider in America - he'd successfully converted a number of hubs himself and had one ready for fabrication, which he offered to me.
The conversion is really simple - it consists of two manufactured flanges with 48h to match the 'proper' hubs - which you braze / weld onto the hub after you've taken the smaller 28h flanges. Have you ever knocked of a hub flange - I was blown away with how simple it was. Two knocks with an engineering hammer and they are off - leaving a serrated edge onto which you push the new flanges over.
One thing to remember is to offset one flange so that it's 1/96 of a revolution past the opposite flange, or else you'll have unequal spoke lengths!
Here's the 28h hub shell and the 48h flanges....

Heres a thread he originally posted on the museum...

and one of the other modifications - obviously for heavy flatland tricks based on the weld / fillet!
-
nice info mate, got an old 36h hub -just need to find some 48h flanges now

nice info mate, got an old 36h hub -just need to find some 48h flanges now
Why don't you just get 36h rims.
I presumed he converted the hubs to 48h as not much call for 28h hubs

nice info mate, got an old 36h hub -just need to find some 48h flanges now
Pretty easy to knock up in a workshop...

Looking forward to seeing how this all pans out, I'm sure it's gonna be stunning!
Love Z-48's, I restored a lovely set years ago and it still narks me that I was hounded into selling them. Standing gear are my fave forks too, got a set here just waiting for the right frame to come along :daumenhoch:

Man, I've been away from the scene for too long! :LolLolLolLol:
Loving this thread. You can't beat an old school freestyler and the fact it's something different from the norm makes it even better in my books. :daumenhoch:

Loving this, can’t wait for next progress update.

okay, progress this far....decals applied and headset on...
flash on...

flash off...

Once built up, I plan to get some better pictures arranged. Most of the parts are collected and restored, with exception to the wheels.
The Z48s have been sent off for rebuilding...once arrived, and once I've finished a seat refurb, I'll update again...
-
Cracking build so far bud , keep it up 👍🏼
-
Loving this. Great thread it’s going to be an outstanding build . Can’t wait for the progress.

That blue is lush mate, can you tell me what the name of blue it is? :smitten:
-
The blue is RAL5012 - used as GT Maui Blue here in UK. There are of course different Dupont codes in USA which are alittle closer. The RAL colour has a wide range of hue/shade, the manufacturer who made the paint luckily was on the lighter hue, but matched a NOS GT Maui Blue seat post I have....

I thought it looked like 5012. Lovely colour, I had my 85 World tour done the same.
Keep the pics coming!

Cool, does Del do that colour?

You are not kidding - this has tested my patience big style....
Here it is, 99% finished, just need to design and cut out the rear brake mounted guard...

Since I posted last on this in January I've completed the following:
1 - rubbed down, peroxided, and hot water bathed with Vanish Gold OxiAction the white Z48s,
2 - cleaned the seat and sent to Mark at MLCreations to refurb / refinish it for me,
3 - tracked down, identified and arranged some decal artwork through Jamyz for the Beach Cities Cycles decals (a Fred Blood sponsor at the time),
4 - pulled my hair out identifying the pedals.....
I'll update on all these bits next.....
-
Okay, so one of the frst parts for this build was the z48. And I mean z48, I sourced one, a complete used wheel from the states, and had to wait another 6 months to find a nos, but with major shelf dirt, Z48 to surface.
Once I had them both it was just a process of rubbing them down - they both had ground in grime and were more light grey than white, so I spent some time rubbing them down carefully. The one that was to become the front was the nos one, and still had the stamped 'ACS Z-48's on them, which left me with a quandary - when I had scanned and enlarged the advert I noticed the rims in the advert, whilst 48 spoke, just had the original 'ACS Z-Rim' stamps on them....I guess they were early pre-production models.
[attachment=1]
After rubbing them down I peroxided them - it was January, no chance of any natural UV's, so I made up a little area in the workshop and set up two UV lamps bought from a local club/disco equipment supplier - it bought back some good memories......ACID!!! :) :) :)
[attachment=2]
After a few days they locked pretty good, but I also decided to push the cleaning / brightening alittle so soaked them in hot water and Vanish
[attachment=3]
[attachment=4]
notice the haro master getting into the act as well....
-
so, on the bars and the seat post there where three rectangular grey/silver decals that I had to identify. It was a fair guess that they would be a sponsor decal, but they didn't look like any others I'd seen before, but after searching BMXmuseum for images of other FB builds I found this, and after badgering the owner he gave me a better photo of the decal...then it was off to Jamyz to commission (he's an artist) a decal for Del to knock some out for me...
The decal is for a bike shop in Hermosa Beach that is, after all these years, still trading and with the same telephone number....
-
pedals...jesus, Ive been through loads of sets before making my mind up on VP300's...although I'm pretty sure they were Hsing TA HTI-851's that were stock on the GT Pro performers from around 87...
[attachment=1]

Looks ace!
-
So, this is pretty much where it stands. I have just to do the rear braker tramer and the final Z48 decals
-
more....
-
and finally....

and by the way, if anyone has a nos blue GT Shinko, let me know....
