Title: genuine CWs?
Post by: Jim71 on January 06, 2018, 11:11 AM
Hi all,

I wondered what people's views were on these bars. I bought them off ebay (of course), taking a bit of a chance based on some quite poor photos that they were the real deal. The welds are good, the dimensions and sweep etc. seem CW to me.
But I know there's differing opinions on whether the knurling has to be cross-hatch or not for them to be considered genuine. Clearly this pair have two sets of horizontal lines. However, none of the popular high-quality imitations (Koizumi, etc.) have quite the same bulge in the bar and quite the same line pattern as these, while there's a lavender pair of CWs on ebay at the moment which are surely genuine new old stock CW and have the similar set of two parallel lines of knurling:  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NOS-Purple-CW-PRO-MUSTACHE-BARS-Old-School-BMX-Knurled-Handlebars-Lavender/331966178357'ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

So I guess I am hoping that people agree that horizontal knurling doesn't automatically mean they're not CW! I'll probably be selling them but would not be happy worrying that they were not genuine. Grateful for any thoughts! thanks. Jim

They’re not genuine CW bars. The knurling on CW bars is diagonal cross hatch over the whole of the stem area.

thanks - i know generally that CWs had the cross-hatch knurling. But given that pair on ebay (which could be fake of course, but are part of a set of other similar later 80s colours which are cross-hatch), whether there is a scenario in which at some point different places were turning them out - some parallel and some cross-hatched?

I'd say definitely not that eBay seller as he would have polished away any knurling completely to make them NOS again :D

Look like they could be Win bars. I’ve got a set up in the loft I’ll take a look later to compare.

Yep the knurling looks slightly different on my Win bars.
