Title: Craig Campbell Prolite
Post by: benno on January 22, 2018, 12:29 AM
Hello chaps I thought it was about time I did a proper build thread again
So here is the latest project and a little bit of a back story,
In March 2014 I met up with an old school mate at the newly opened Rush skatepark,we soon got chatting about the old days and old school bmx and he mentioned that he still had his old Craig Campbell from bitd , well obviously I said if he wanted to sell it then I’m his man, he replied that he wasn’t fussed about getting cash for it but was willing to swap for something ie a new school rider ,a bit like the pink We the people bike I was riding that night.
Well the deal was done he tried out the WTP, loved it and I was the proud owner of an apparently rather tatty and yet to be seen CC Prolite ,along with a promise that I would deffo restore it.
When I did get it he wasn’t wrong it was ropey as fook the chrome was shot the dropouts were chewed and it had a few holes and dents to contend with and the added bonus of an alloy renthal seatpost cut off flush and stuck solid in the frame but it was mine and I just had to decide what to do with it.
What I actually did to it was fook all and I went on to do about another 10 builds before coming back to it this time last year.
I had been collecting all the parts to do the traditional chrome and green rider rep that Craig rode but I had also changed my mind in that time and sold all the green stuff so was back to square 1 .
Anyway last January I got my ass into gear and made a start by taking it to a chromers to be stripped and also a quote to repair and re-chrome, when I went back to collect it, it looked proper sorry for itself and with the quote for the re-chrome coming in at 350-400 quid and that was on top of the metalwork repairs that needed doing the chrome idea was soon fooked off 😂 and if you know me well then you’ll know I’m not a fan of chrome bikes anyway and I don’t actually own a chrome bike either .
With the frame back I sent it to a local frame builder called Ted James to get all the metal work repaired , it turned out that Ted was a bit laid back and I didn’t get it back for almost 6 months but he had done a good job I gotta say.
With it finally back I got straight into getting it all rubbed down ready to send to Dan as I’d decided it was gonna be painted.
But yet again a couple more builds came along and it got put on the back burner and didn’t make it to Dan untill December.
Well last week exactly a year after I sent it to be stripped I received it back from Dan with its nice shiny Baby Blue paint job
Sorry for the essay but if you got this far here’s a few pics of how I got it , I will add more tomorrow

More stripped and a bit of chemistry to deal with the Alloy seat post

Cool story mate, looking forward to seeing it built.
Don't know why people cut alloy posts off ,had the same issue with my prolite

I sold your old one (303) on last year Ed 👎🏼
It turned out that this was the slightly better frame set out of the 2 hence me keeping it 😀👍🏼

Fresh back from SBD , some of these pics are Dans,a couple are mine
I’ve not had any chance to get any decent pics yet as I’ve been flat out with work

Post by: benno on January 23, 2018, 10:21 AM
The finish is fookin lovely as you would expect from Dan he never disappoints,
This is where it’s up too at the moment , I do have the decals and most if not all the parts to build but I need to decide which way to go with colours of components etc.
When I get chance I’ll get the decals on and the headset and dig through the parts and try a few options out 👍🏼

Got these little beauties to go on ,they need a good clean up and a dose of peroxide and sun so they’ll have to wait till the spring, but they are a cracking set 👍🏼

I picked up a slightly tired Hot seat late last year ,
I’d had my eye out for one for a while but they don’t seem to come up for sale very often
so took a chance on ropey one and sent it off to Mark Ralph for a resto.
I’d heard his work was top notch and I wasn’t disappointed 👍🏼👍🏼

So I’ve been having a play around with blue and white bits and different combos etc
Not really decided on all of it yet but it’s deffo getting white tuffs , white seat and white grips ,
Few pics below 👍🏼

Title: Re: Craig Campbell Prolite
Post by: Retrodan72 on February 09, 2018, 05:50 PM
Ok, if it were mine and I was definitely going to use a white seat, grips and Tuffs, then I'd be inclined to go white with all parts, brakes, stem, clamp, tyres, pedals and chainring, only use blue on the powder and decals.

But that's just my opinion.
Title: Re: Craig Campbell Prolite
Post by: benno on February 09, 2018, 06:34 PM
My favourite at the mo is white stem and seatclamp , but blue brakes and chain ring
mainly because I’d like to use 880’s for a change and I happen to have a nos Anno blue set 😂

I'm liking the blue components on it. Either way though that's going to be one cracking build.

Cheers lads , I’m still liking white bits but with blue calipers , I think when I start building it I’ll try the different bits out , once the wheels and tyres are on ,
It’ll be wearing these 👇🏼 by the way 👍🏼

No just this one mate , I had 2 last year both were poor condition had them both stripped and repaired and this one turned out to be the better frame so I kept this one and sold the other.

I’m just about to put some 880s on the current build I’m doing because I fancied a change. Just need to decide whether to go polished or white🤔

Time for a little update , I bought these lovely coaster tuffs from Brett last year, they were always bought with this build in mind .
As you can see they are in dire need of a good clean up and a good bit of sunbathing smothered in peroxide .
First step today was to strip all the axles and hubs out and give the wheels an initial clean, they had some round sticky marks at the base of each spoke which came off easy with a bit of acetone.
I then gave em a spray over with some degreaser and got a toothbrush to scrub in behind the hubs etc.
The next step will be to stanley blade round the rims to remove the brake rub and give em a proper scrub with some jif  before running em through the dishwasher a couple of times . Hopefully that’ll get them good enough to peroxide as long as we get some sun that is 👍🏼
Here’s a few pics

Hopefully I can suss out how it all goes back together when the time comes ,
Some of the bearings were knackered but luckily I had an old pair of coaster OGK’s
which I can rob some out of .

You don't happen to have any of the coaster innards left from the OGKs do you mate? I have a rear Peregrine Master that apparently someone tried to convert to free coaster so a few bits may be missing but I've not had it to bits yet to see what.
Great work on the Skyways- they've come up like new ones  fistblump

So I decided to go with blue parts in the end, the problem is there is massive variations in shades of blue so I made the decision to have a bash with some anodise spray, some people are gonna hate this especially on the og Anno blue Hutch stem, but it was a bit scratched here and there and I’m working on the theory that the paint could be stripped off at a later date and the anno underneath will be fine 😬
I stopped short of painting my nos set of blue 880’s though and decided do restore a ropey white set of MX 1000’s that I already had.
I also did a Hutch seat clamp to match .
As you can see there’s a bit of a hutch theme running through this build, it will have a Hutch stem, seat clamp, seatpost and Pedals
Anyway here’s a few pics 😀
