So, I haven't built a bike for almost 2 years now. Those who have paid attention will know that I have sourced frame sets for other people or bought a set up which somebody has liked and since my heart hasn't been in the building side for a while, I've let them have it.
But........
When I was sourcing a Performer frame set for a friend I came across this. At its heart was an 85/6 Performer/WT of some sort. The rattle can paint hid a whole world of history. I made an offer and snagged it for a modest sum. Yes you see the wheels and seat for what they are but the rest was a lottery.

Wicked base Nick....can't wait to see what you do with it :daumenhoch:
-
So I stripped the bike.
It's a Japan made 1986 GT Pro Performer/World Tour/Freestyle Tour frame set as it was 4130 stamped.
As I tidied the forks up I noticed they were double cable guide WIN!
And that although the forks had been painted by Stevie Wonder....
....with a stick! They had the original paint on the steerer tube......Bubble Gum Pink (Probably RAL 4003)
[attachment=1]
So now I'm in a dilemma......
-
PINK!
Nice stem. Thank you btw, it arrived yesterday :daumenhoch:
-
2 years .. WOW ..
If you need some help .. PM ME ;D
-
My dilemma:
I was going to build the Eddie Fiola World tour model from 85.
[attachment=1]
but then when the bike came complete there were too many original 86 parts to waste, and when that colour appeared it set me thinking and searching.

Not sure which colour combo yet but the possibilities are endless and as I have most of the parts it would be stupid not to especially with today's prices!
-
Now I've just got to tidy them all up!
The seat: GT not bad really, just rusty rails and guts. WIN!
The seat post was also caked in paint, turns out it's an unstamped GT post WIN!
The seat clamp apart form scrappy paint is an 86 GT wing stamped clamp. WIN!
The grips were ratty A'me rounds, ideal for a rat build and have already got to their new home.
The stem was a tidy SR MS-423, now in the capable hands of our very own Wini.
The bars are also badly painted, except the grip area :LolLolLolLol: they are GT Pro bars. WIN!
Headset is a generic factory fitted headset.
It only had a back brake which turned out to be a DC 890 with a DC tech 4 and dated 85 DC cable. Ratty but ideal for a survivor build.
The crank was a factory spec SR tubular 175 in awesome condition. WIN!
The chain wheel is stamped GT cheese grater 43T in very good condition.......Unsure as I see them as 87, but very very tidy. DRAW!
The pedals were factory spec (on Peformers) SR 519, switching to 470s.
The wheels are obviously OGK GT Performer mags. Man they run sweet (only issue is brake rub, what a fcuker to remove!) WIN!
So in essence, with a lot of elbow grease, Jiff and a bit of SBD magic I think I can bring her back to life in some sort of former 1986 GT glory.
I'll keep you posted.
ps Carlos you're an :nickswan: :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol:

Looking forward to seeing how this turns out Nick.
It's been 2 years this May since I did a build too.
-
That Blue is lovely . I think that's the colour i'll be doing my team pro :daumenhoch: [attachment=1]
-
Overall the wheels aren't bad just the chuffing brake rub!

[attachment=3]
[attachment=4]
One down one to go!
But by fcuk this is one tedious job and my fingers are red raw! :'( :LolLolLolLol:

Looks brilliant Nick, how are you doing it?
-
brute force and ignorance :LolLolLolLol:
I've scraped of as much rub as possible with a pair of open bandage scissors. They are fairly blunt so they won't dig into the rim and chop my pinkies off if they jam then lurch. To be fair, not much rub is coming off :-\
I'm then using a quality scourer lubed with Jiff (Ciff in new money) and a dab of warm water. The thing that's slowing me down is my finger tips throbbing like fcuk!
Still, it's not in any rush :LolLolLolLol:
The wheels are pretty good so a quick scrub around the spokes and a wet wipe on a wooden skewer is getting into all the tight bits.
-
Could you knock up some pan scourer brake blocks and get a brake caliper to do apply friction to clean the rub off and save your throbbing fingers?
Just waggle the wheel back & too to get the rub off. Or am I takling daft?
-
to be honest there are probably a million different ways of doing it :LolLolLolLol:
I've not normally restored stuff to this extent so it's a bit of an adventure "help"
-
bar keepers friend is great for getting brake rub off.

-
after a shitty week in the field I have come home to a pile of joy from the postman :LolLolLolLol:
[attachment=1]
I'm not sure abut the pink Shinkos yet but I do have black Shinkos just in case it doesn't work :LolLolLolLol:
-
I'm still working on the brake rub too "nono" :idiot2:
-
No doubt there is some sort of solvent out there that would have that brake rub off in a jiffy. Just finding one that doesnt melt the mags :-\
Bet some sort of axle mounted crapping tool would go down well. Nice circular scrapping with no fear of digging in or putting gouges in the rim edge :)

I think the fact that I'm doing it so carefully and my real job taking me away all week are big contributing factors to why I haven't done it yet :LolLolLolLol:
I'm happy with the results so far so will carry on, only 3/4 of a wheel to go :crybaby:
-
I bet this will turn out nice ::)
-
Going for it today. On to the last side of the rear wheel now.
[attachment=1]
Fcuk knows what blocks were used but FML!

This is going to be another cracker mate :4_17_5:
-
Love your builds Swan Gay, great attention to detail.
-
Thanks chaps, it’s a bit of a compliment to have these comments from such esteemed builders.
Considering I was actually looking for a frame set for a friend it’s turned into a labour of love.
I think I’m there with bits but now waiting for the refinish on most of the major parts.
I’ve had some little eBay victories with this one. Not only the bike itself but I finally picked up a stamped GT power disc for relative pennies compared to the US market.
Next update will be as when these bits arrive :daumenhoch:
-
This was always going to the hardest part of the jigsaw to find!
Found!
[attachment=1]
[attachment=2]
-
Just sat waiting! :whistle:
[attachment=1]
-
Had word this week that the frame is about to experience the magic of SBD. Just the seat to come back then we’re ready to go!
[attachment=1]
-
So my OCD has done my noggin in with the grips. I found a lovely set of white A’me rounds but the grips that came on the bike originally were A’me rounds with no outer flange. Anyway I put up an ad on facefook and got teased with a couple of pairs, knowing I had the white rounds and a set of red Tris I could use as trade bait I went to the cave to get a picture of them. As I walked out I saw this
[attachment=2]
Mrs S G’s Hot Heart. But take a closer look!
[attachment=1]
I guess now I have to convince her it’s the right thing to do :LolLolLolLol:
-
She will never notice :4_17_5:

She will never notice :4_17_5:
I smoothed it over with Mrs S G
I think!
-
The positive to come out of this wait for the seat and the frame set to be redone is that the skin on my thumb has grown back after stripping that bloody break rub off.
My phone now recognises my finger print again! :LolLolLolLol:
-
Great thread and a really nice build Nick! I'm a little bit envious of that seat :smitten:
Hats off for your endurance on them OGK's. I know how much work that is, as I did a set myself a while ago. Next time you have set to be cleaned up, let me know please. I actually enjoyed doing it. :crazy2:
Looking forward on this stunner.
-
Just a couple more bits.
Powder had to be ordered from the US so just waiting on that.
