The RL20 has arrived. I’m really excited about this build, prob my last one. I only need the f/f, so the rest will be available. It’s going to be a tribute bike - RL’s 84 tour bike - I’m hoping for the quality of my Ruffell replica Streetbeats. It’s going to need a ton of love though, it’s been rattle-canned badly. Forks are chrome underneath as well, just to add insult to injury 😬

My balls tingle alittle every time I see RL20 as a subject.
Easily the most underated freestyle frame and forks....I have two. Light for a freestyler but strong. Redline gave these frame and forks a lifetime guarantee!! I'm not lucky enough however to have the very early front forks you have, the ones without the peg bosses. The swedged forks are a work of metalworking art!
Don't neglect the build thread - Ive lost the love recently, this could fire it up!!

I love RL20s, I have one that I need to build up too. Mine has no peg bosses but i think they are from a PL20 but I'm no expert.
Looking forward to this build. What crank is that and is it for sale if not needed? "wantit"

Dug out a pic of RL’s bike. One or two “difficult” parts to acquire - may take a while. I’ve got to get the rattle can paint stripped off and get it to SBD so I’ll have time. I think maybe the Panaracer Stadium tyres might be a sticking point and a 41 tooth bubble font. The cranks that came with the frame are Redline Proline 180’s so they’ll be up for grabs as they’re the wrong ones. I’ve found an old 80’s motor cross number plate to make the Buff guard from.

41 tooth bubble font shouldn't be too difficult mate as no one really wants 'em...all I see is 41, 42 45, 47 etc these days! If they are the Panaracers with the big black writing that could take a good while...if they are Panaracer freestyle some should turn up.....will keep an eye out... :daumenhoch:

Does this have a RL Brute stem? never had one, but love em. Going to be a strong bike!

I’m thinking the decal is repop. The signature is too fat. It is positioned right on the edge of the Redline stamp, just looks slightly too large.

By freestyle bolt do you mean a Potts mod? That's what put me off building a repro of the OG advert one as the RL20 was the first bike i really remember running them and I wouldn't want to not run one on mine :chin:

Buff guard shenanigans. Cut from an 80’s old numberplate. Much trimming and sanding later, I think I finally have the guard sitting the way it does in the magazine pic. I used additional cable ties and then poured boiling water over the guard to soften it. Pulled all the cables ties tight to get the required shape and removed them when it cooled down.

These bad boys were exceptionally difficult to find. I had ‘wanted’ ads all over the world for these. Somebody on here is going to say they’ve got half a dozen pairs in their cave now! Anyway, really stoked that these have landed today from Canada and bonus - no import tax to pay. Final part to find is the Redline bubble font 41 tooth chainring and I’m talking to a guy in California that has one. SBD has the frameset so as soon as it’s back, I’ll start assembly.

Well. Gutted to hear back from America today that the bmxmuseum guy does not want to trade and is sending my bubble font 44 back to me. After about 6 weeks of negotiating. Frustrating game this.

So, question time. At the time of the article in the magazine (84), RL was running Panaracer tyres and his build specs list the tyres as ‘National Tyres’. If you have access to a copy of Freestyle BMX v1 issue 2 - take a look. I’ll put up some pics but digital quality they are not. Now, he was touring with Mike and Mike’s bike spec lists his tyres as Comp Stadium. In the magazine pics it seems pretty clear that they are both using the same tyres and that RL is also using Comp Stadium tyres. Have at it.

National/ panaracer are /were the same company......probably just described differently in the one mag? The tyres you have look right to me... :-\

the panaracer tyres logos have white inserts as well as yellow.....there's no white in the image, so I'd defo back the stadiums...

Working on the Flo Panel today. Magazine pic shows the only image of the front of the plate in the whole 5 page article.

And progress so far, just waiting for Del (legend) and this’ll be finished. Rescued the actual frame decal for the Redline on the plate.

A good day today. A package from Del with the frame decals and some for the plate. Just awaiting one more decal from the States. The 41 arrived from America today too. Wasn’t in great condition and had some oxidation and caked on rust (from the chain). That’s been soaking in some water with 4 Steradent tablets (for false teeth) all day and has come out looking much better. Put it in a zip-lock bag with a thorough coating of wd40 for a couple hours and that has taken off any last bits of dirt.
Ready to build :D.

Had a really busy time lately with helping mil move house and our little lads 5th birthday, but now that lot’s out of the way, I promise it’s on its way. Still waiting for my nuts to drop back down after putting the decals on the f/f this afternoon. Waiting for some red cable ties and 1 more dec for the Haro plate. Should be complete by the end of the week, it’ll be worth the wait. Really appreciate you taking time to respond on the post, thanks all fistblump
