So I have now got a Mongoose frame and forks as well as the skyway.
So that is 2 builds I have to now source parts for and complete.
I can see this is going to get expensive.
[attachment=1]
Not sure what parts to use on this one. I have ordered a full year correct sticker set from BMX Products.
-
very nice... just don't make the same mistake I did... make sure the down tube decal gets put on the correct way round. :daumenhoch:

Without seeing it I am struggling to work out how it could be put on the wrong way round??

Red part of the decal towards the gusset.

Could be that the main decal goes on the top tube for that year of frame. Have a look on vintagemongoose.com it’s a great resource for all things mongoose :daumenhoch:

Oh I see now...in the wrong position.
Was struggling to understand how they could be the wrong way round (writing backwards/upside down) :2funny:

I've been told (severely) that the tyres are for clowns. :crazy2:
Rest assured I have some plain black ones (and some black with tan walls) to try out.
The ones in the photo came on the wheels....that's all.
-
It's been said that I love a mk1 'Goose and this is a fantastic colour. Build it how you want mate and enjoy it :daumenhoch:
As for the clown comments, I'd like to assure you that the folks on here are all clowns, every one of us. Most of us know each other and at least one a year meet up in a field, drink beer and talk about life, the universe and kids bikes. So if you weren't sure we are all clowns, just go have a look at the photos from any of the rides or MK and you will be under no doubt were all clowns.
Especially Griff :yahoo_silent: :2funny:
-
Hey fella,
the bike is lovely no doubt about that :daumenhoch: as for the comments in another thread nobody is saying your a clown? the reference was made that we've seen loads of people usually on egay fitting tyres like that to what we oldies would refer to as clown bikes lol you are deffo not ;) and the bike is comming along great :daumenhoch: hope thats cleared that up ;)

I quite like the tyres....they mirror the black/gold of the top tube decal.
Oh hang on, that's my outside voice "nono"

Ok I give in.
All black or black/tan
Picture for potential effect not actual tyres
[attachment=1]
-
All black with Tuffs on a mk1 all day mate, looks awesome :daumenhoch:
Skinwall / tanwall with spokes :coolsmiley:
-
Yeah... black knobbly's. :daumenhoch:
-
All Black tyres, build looks great so far 8)
Brian :daumenhoch:
-
Looking ace that is I have to say pal fistblump
-
Looks great so far, all black tyres me thinks, take your time with it, you are doing the right thing by trying parts for style colour etc.
Take a look at the Museum section as well if you feel a bit stuck , plenty of inspiration there :daumenhoch:
-
I'm regretting selling my goose frame set now. Very nice 👍🏼
-
I am now changing to wire wheels.
Got some Araya rims and ACS hubs on the way. [attachment=2]
I also have an ACS seat clamp coming. [attachment=1]
These will compliment the ACS stem I already have [attachment=3]
So it will have ACS stem, seat clamp, and hubs, all silver/chrome.
May not be 'as skip intended' but I think it will look smart.
Relegated the Tuffs to my Skyway StreetStyler build (which is further down my list)
-
Now you're talking - love a gusset Goose with spokes :smitten:
The Team Goose with blue trim in this pic was the very last o/s bike I kept. Sadly sold a while back when we bought a new house, but I kept it for nearly 10yrs
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/aa149/Spen69/S4010517.jpg)
-
So now have the ACS Stem, ACS Seat clamp, SR Cro Mo Crank, Profile Spider & Chainring and the Win Bars fitted.
[attachment=1]
Just waiting for wheel components to arrive and will then be built with SS spokes to look like this
[attachment=2]
Also just organised this saddle
-
Coming together nicely fella :daumenhoch:
-
i am liking this now it has the ACs stuff on and the tuffs and those tyres are gone! Are you going for ACs stoker pedals too to complete the picture? they are a bit 'late' for this type of frame but real nice components and look good on there. Most of the bits you are using are more suited to a 83/4 bike much better but this will still look great. I know the components are only a few years later than the frame but that was a long time back then as innovation and the sport developed very rapidly.
In time you will probably swap bits out as you get more into the scene and look at other similar bikes. My first build is still evolving now after 8 or 9 years i am still not COMPLETELY happy with it but it's not far off my vision of perfection now. Most of the major components have been changed two or three times, some five or six!! Some bits were changed for era correctness, some purely on condition, some as their proportions were not right for the frame and some purely because i saw another part i preferred. It all depends what the bike os for and how anal you want to get about it all.....
I reckon DEFO all black tyres too.... :daumenhoch:

Thanks, I think it will come together pretty well.
I do like the idea of ACS throughout (well all the buts they made) but I am not convinced about their stoker pedals..bit strange looking.
I accept that the purists will frown on my selection of components but it is not a show bike and I am not claiming it is 'as Skip Hess expected'.
I am just going for something that looks like you got the bike in 1980 and then swapped out parts for what you though were better as time went on, with a bit of brand identity/consistency.
Black AME grip, Black Kashimax seat ....and probably all black tyres (but not sure which exact ones. Want something that compliments the Aero's. So not too heavy/bulky I guess).

Mate, there is no better plan as far as I'm concerned. BMX was exactly this when we were kids and that's what gives me the memories when I look at builds now, same as when I used to build myself :coolsmiley:
-
Baby steps:
Seat post and seat now fitted.
The Araya Aero rims and ACS hubs arrived this week so time to get the wheels built.
-
Coming along nicely! :)
-
Probably not much use now but spotted this....

Thanks for bothering...but I have gone off piste with the ACS theme "nono"
-
Waiting for my Araya /ACS wheels so stuck the tuffs on for now.
[attachment=1]

Looks good :daumenhoch: a set of ACS Stoker pedals will set you back alot of wedge even in ratty condition that is if you can find any? ???
-
ACS Stoker pedals on their way

Sweet! :daumenhoch:

Ok so Danny has built the wheels (nicely done). ACS hubs/Araya Aeros/Stainless Spokes.
Need rim tape before I can mount tyres properly.
ACS stoker pedals now on too.
[attachment=1]
Not sure about these tyres but you get the idea.
-
Looking great, but get some black tires on it! :daumenhoch:
-
Looking good buddy.
I agree about the tyres though, would look so much better with black.
-

^^^THIS!
-
I really like the look of the red tyres. A pair of black comp IIs or the tyres off your Tuffs would look good too :daumenhoch:
-
Thanks for the feedback folks.
I am sticking to my guns on this one (red tyres).
:tumbleweed:
-
That's very cool as is.
I had red tyres w/ tanwalls on my 'goose back in my teens, but I have solid black tyres on it now.
And if you're riding it now, the new odyssey tyres will be perfect!
Brian :daumenhoch:
-
Nearly done.
[attachment=1]
Gonna need a layback post....damn these frames are short.
-
OK changed to all Red.
Just waiting for the 6mm bolt kit for the ACS BOA brakes and need to put a layback seat post on (top tube is well short).
Pretty pleased with it for a first proper build.
[attachment=1]
-
Tbh I like the black kashi seat better :daumenhoch: as the red San Marco seat is a mini seat ???
-
I agree it needs a different seat, but the all red is what I am after as a finished look.
