Now that the RL20 is finished - I wondered whether I should do Mike Buff’s Trick Star to go with it. I’ve got a Buff Ripper on the bench awaiting parts to turn up, so need something else to work on.
-
Go for it ... never seen a replica of that bike :4_17_5:
-
Got a totally nos Buff z rim which could be a good start ;)
-
I’ve got the Zeds ;)
Now, if anyone has a red, white and blue Max USA seat cover - I have a spare kidney I don’t necessarily need.
-
seen one on the bat recently, nos! wasn't cheap though :)

Funny how RL's bike runs a Potts mod but Buff's has a standard front brake :chin:
Does the Trickstar not have a coaster mount as that looks like a Diacompe seat clamp on the rear stays?
Looking forward to another top build mate fistblump

Knew I'd seen one. not red white and blue though :/

The original model/s didn’t have coaster tab and the forks - no pegs. This was pre-production. You’ll notice it wasn’t even called a Trick Star and was listed as a Hutch Freestyler.

This should be a good thread 8)
-
Parts spec from the same magazine. Interestingly, some of it is incorrect in my opinion. The seat is clearly a Kashi, the stem is def not Hutch and the chainring is Tuf Neck not Pro Neck. I’d welcome your grumblings on this ;D

Looks great, how're you gonna do that frame? Or have you sorted that already?

“I know a guy” ;)
Going to have the tab professionally removed intact so it can be welded back on if necessary. This may well be a keeper, so even though it makes me puke thinking about cutting it - doing it anyway. I have never seen a Trick Star (Hutch Freestyler) without the tab, ever. Otherwise I’d look out for one instead. Somebody will pop up now with two :knuppel2:

Pretty sure the seat is an Elina, a Turbo aero. That's just mho, but looking at the image closely the nose looks too deep for a kashi:

I reckon Pete is right about the seat Simon...at least that's one thing they got right!!
Regarding the seat cover...i would probably ask Steve (ESM) if he could make a replica, i would not have thought that would be outside his capabilities.. :daumenhoch:

Loved your RL by the way and a great thread.

Look what’s just arrived, so happy to see these. A nos Suntour 36 coaster hub and some 105 gage spokes (absolute bitch to source) as used by Mike back in the day. Now to get that hub stripped and off to Dan for a coat of white 8)

I know it’s Friday night and you’re all ooot on the lash, but nosstillwithreleasepowder Comp ll Stadium :smitten:

Hahaha...i read in my half pissed and other intoxicants state ' while you lot are out on the lash i have been on the nostril release powder'
that's a new name for it I thought!! :crazy2:
I am still not sure about the 'release powder' myth...either way, You find some excellent parts Simon ...this is going to be just as cool as the RL , can't wait to see the finished article, your rider reps are next level :daumenhoch:
-
Yeah, me either, probably just been hanging in someone’s garage and got years of dust n shit on them :-\ there’s def sawdust in the treads.

A bit of light reading about other views on NOS tryes from a different bike forum

Interesting, thanks - I followed slightly diff method but seemed to have good results. I steam clean my tyres inside and out. Before that I clean the outside walls with Mr Sheen furniture polish. After the steam clean, I slather a good amount of vas on the inside of the tyre and pop it on a wheel and slightly over inflate it. You can see the vas coming through the tyre under pressure. Wash down the tyre, release some pressure and leave overnight. Repeat next day. Show pony only/ terms and conditions apply/ may cause back ache.

Del has waved his magic wand over my Zeronine plate. Result. Del’s wand is massive, so I’m told :daumenhoch:
-
Coaster tab removed and looks like it was never there. Off to polishing and chrome next.

Your attention to detail mate is spot on fistblump
-
The frameset has gone to chrome today and I found some Judge forks for sale in Nova Scotia, which I had to wait for. I also got some nos Mike Buff Hutch Trick Team decals on the way, which I am well pleased about. Props to Ady for the lead on those.
-
Wheels are laced, thanks to Ady, top job and not easy lacing those beast spokes on the rear. They look amazing, especially with Dan’s paintwork on the Suntour coaster. And those lovely hen’s teeth tyres to finish them off. The f/f has yet to return from chrome - 5wks now, dread to think what they’re going to charge
Finding a red DC hinged clamp was a lot more difficult than I anticipated, but one on the way - as well as nice 83 red tech 3’s. Slow burner this one :daumenhoch:
-
Just a shot to show you those spokes. Mike had .80 gage on front and .105 gage on rear for strength. That’s roughly 14gage front and 12gage rear.
-
They were like metal rods ..
Perfect for z rims as ridged as my missus 🤣🤣

They look awesome mate :daumenhoch:

Forks are back from the dead, I’m pleased with the result :daumenhoch:
As they are and as they were - worthy of resto.
-
They have come up a treat , nice and very bling 8)
Must have been a nightmare getting these super rare forks..
Top work the chromers have done too.. fistblump

I was just lucky with the forks, went online at the right time, got talking to a guy in Nova Scotia, Canada - talking about what we’re building and he says he’s got some I can buy
-
Well after 6 months of searching every platform I could, I’ve finally found a Tioga Max Flo stem. I think it’s bang on the money.
-
Another og ingredient sourced. Chrome flaking right off, prime candidate for resto. It’s getting close now, nearly ready to build this bad boy.
-
Awesomeness :4_17_5: 8)
-
Last two decals for the plate arrived today so I’ve been putting that together. Update: 2hours later and my butt cheeks have yet to un-clench.
It’s not perfect, so I might have to bin it, but for now -
-
Now this I am looking forward to seeing fistblump

Fook yea fistblump
-
Another slice of the pie. The lengths we go to to get these parts, honestly :idiot2:
It’s going to be covered up too! Elina Aero Turbo 81
-
Nearly done with this. I still have some fettling to do on the plate and the Buff guard, but for now it’s done. I’m gonna change the Mx 1000 for 900’s and when some og cranks show up, I’ll stick a fork in her and call her done done.
-
looking awesome, attention to detail on this build has been second to none :4_17_5:
Couple of questions if you don't mind,
Who did you use for the chroming? I've some parts to be done and looking for someone trustworthy.
And, something that's always interested me: when mounting a coaster with the seat post clamp do you need to pad the clamp-seat stay area any, or does the gap close up tight enough without any 'filling'?
Quality work sir
-
Amazing Build one my of favourites from BITD due to this pic
-
Yes, the chain stay is padded with a strip of inner tube wrapped round to fill the space :daumenhoch:
I use Doug Taylor for chrome, at Weston Super Mare, never had a bad job done there. Not cheap though ???

Great shot - is that RL on the pier too?

Once again top work mate .
And attention to detail second to none..
