Title: So Last Year I bought a Rickman Freestyler Gen 2 from Tim March (FINISHED 4 NOW)
Post by: Funkyworm on September 25, 2019, 03:38 PM
Tim's a member on the Rickman Page that i run on (Fakebook) . I put the page together 6-7 years ago in order to bring together all the information that i had on the brand in 1 place (my catalogues , magazine scans  photo's etc ) & possible share my childhood memories of riding my Rickman with other lovers of the brand & I'm sure most of you know that Tim's MRD frame sets ware made by Rickman back in the day.

We've spoken over the years about Rickman MRD Tran am & the relationship between them all amongst other things & he messaged me just before Christmas (great timing)  :LolLolLolLol: as i was skint & moving house in the next 6-8 weeks or so.

He mentioned that he had a bike for sale that was his son's (pub rider) & did i want to buy it . So he sent me some images & i decided that i couldn't turn it down as i was after a rider myself & wanted something to strip down & build...

It was a Mk 2 which from what anyone can tell came out late 85 most likely for Christmas. A version of this bike was also reviewed in Action Bike May 86 from memory as a (March Freestyler) . Tim told me this had nothing to do with him & that the bike was never released & that Rickman & Tran am had a surplus of frames & were looking to shift  Matthew Kerry did a great reproduction of this Magazine build a couple of years back & has showed it at MK a few times now.

My sole intention was to keep this bike OG but the chrome was just too far gone in parts for me & at the back of my mind there was a Build i'd always wanted to do & this frame was the perfect candidate so Whilst building my latest chrome TRM i took the frame forks & bars to ACF Howell in walsall (my go to chrome platers) & had them revert the chroming process giving me a virgin base to start my build.

So the inspiration for the build came from an advert (Without Pictures) from a magazine clip from 1987.....

I own a 1984 & 1985 catalogue Price list & knew that Rickman made Frame sets in Chrome & White & I'd seen this image of a lavender one which clearly came with different colour decals below.

But I had never seen to this dayan original Green one  (as mentioned in the advert or indeed pink) until around
8 years ago when i saw these images from Rainers in Germany.

Ok so in February I moved house & I had a couple of other builds  ( 2 TRM’ s) that I wanted to finish .

Plus I was re designing the garden & building my man cave garden room ( bar ) along with other renovations that were & still are sucking my finances dry  >:( so this went on the back burner for a good 8 months or so & I’ve been itching to get it painted at least .

I drove  to a friend of mine ( KIBBY @ Paintworx Loughborough) & a couple of weeks later (as he's been so busy) we discussed colours for the frame set as we only had the images above to work from & a standard (Hutch baby pink powder coat) that seems to get thrown on everything just wasn't gonna cut it as this id definitely lighter & needed to be wet paint just like the original.

After looking through some old colour swatches we found this old paint colour used in the 80’s which looked to be a perfect match called (Lupin).  The paint supplier wasn't sure they could even still mix this old colour due to paint standards changing many times since its creation but after checking they were able to put the colour together & it's as close as you can get (from a photo reference point at least)  :daumenhoch:

It came out amazing & just the ( stock ) colour I imagined the originals to be . Steve' or (Kibby) has worked on 2 of my old Porches in the past plus countless bmw's & Audi's that I've owned & has done a few BMX bits for me over the years ( handlebars mostly ) but never a full frame set but i knew the job would be exceptional. I mean a guy trusted to paint 300k lambo's is gonna be good ... fistblump

So on Tuesday I collected her & Im in Love  :smitten:

:welcome   Home little Rickman [attachment=5]
