Yep nail on the head, seat clamp would make it an 84. I've got a few bits ready so hopefully this shouldn't take too long.

A few pics for inspiration. I'm going to be a bit controversial with this by not trying to go spec. No turbo stem or Seat post, and I'm running 900's & tech 3's.
The Seat tube angle on the 84 is a bit better suited for a layback Seat post that I will be using. Although it was an 83 in my local bike shop back in the day I always remember this cover making an impact.

Looking forward to seeing this done Glynn, I've been a fan of your builds for 12 years now and each one has been built with an amazing attention to detail. There's too many 'ta-da? builds on FB, parts thrown together and then just finished pics to go like fishing with. As with John's Rampar, it's a detailed build thread on the forum that I enjoy and remember the most.

Brake callipers re assembled, mx900's and the tech 3's have been chromed, chain ring polished. Nos Oakley's dug out of the cave, nos suntour 16t freewheel. I dropped the crank caps and seatclamp off with butts yesterday for rechrome. I'm getting a bit more giddy about this now.
Also found an excellent how to on recovering the Seat too when that arrives I can't wait to get cracking.

Never thought I?d get round to doing one of these tbh. It was always on the wish list but with my rule of I'm only buying now to build with the intention of riding it seemed even further out of reach. Well not now , can't wait to turn out on it next year  :coolsmiley:

Buzzing at the moment. Just got a couple of bits back.
Seatclamp rechromed and the crank caps. The Seat arrived on Monday and the suede arrived today. So I got cracking with that.

Thanks
I was lucky really I had Quite a few of the parts already . Also I'm not going completely spec . The f/f bars & crank were a one in one out. That took the sting out a lot.

Most of the hard work done then.....Are you using an original stem?

No , all the bikes I build now I ride so this is going to be running a dk xxl square back. Interestingly enough the stem although lovely to look at was one of the criticisms in the bikes performance evaluation . One of the comments was, ?I?d put on a longer gooseneck ?

I decided to do a total about face on this build . I'm now going down the tribute route, it was just itching at me so I decided to double up on some parts so I could build it for show trying to stick closely to the 84 cover and the poster inside from the same shoot.

So going from the two pics above the differences I notice from a spec HLT are:
Pro pads on the rear with salmon continental/tuff pads on the front.
No crank caps and a normal black sugino chainring.
SR Laprade seatpost
On the second pic you can make out the SC2 seatclamp
Harry is running araya aeros on suzue sealed hubs.
Gold chain
Gold decal set
Haro flo plate. Working out what was on that was a question I raised on the HLTDB group on FB. I could make out 7 and Oakley and thought the first number could possibly be a six. Sure enough it was, one eagle eyed member had seen a shot in another mag two months later of Harry racing with that plate.

Got my hands on a plate over Christmas and another seat to recover. Been busy tonight with the suede and got that done. Just waiting on the diamond back cut outs for the seat to come. In the next couple of weeks I'll have some chrome 890's to pick up and will be dropping off the arayas and suzue hubs for the wheel build.

Hell yea, rider reps rule......everyone knows that the actual rider would not be riding the exact factory spec, completes always were and are built to a budget although the HLT was  a VERY high factory spec. It is always nice to know what the rider actually used to ride, whether it be for sponsorship reasons or just personal preference. One would like to think that each rider actually liked the components they rode as opposed to just using them for the pay cheque.....debatable!!
