Title: 86 Star Way Free Master
Post by: Chilli Rinse on December 15, 2020, 11:01 PM
She's a nice French survivor which will be cleaned up and kept as original as possible.
She's been stripped down and I've made a start.
Here's a few bought as pics from the listing.

Here's what I've bought parts wise.
The tab on the rotor cup was cracked so luckily I found this ACS set up.
Nos colour matched Belvin cables.
Very used Dyna Max

The tyres came with a pair of wheels I bought a while back.
The mags have had a scrub and came up quite well. Tyres mounted,  Axles back in soon.

I found these ads taken from Bicross Magazine from France.

Cool stuff, I would love to find an og copy up for grabs.

Just keeping as is Damo, the paint has plenty of marks but no rust. Just adding the parts pictured above to get her rolling again  :daumenhoch:

I know they're not the most popular but I'm keeping the snake post.  :daumenhoch:
It had some light surface rust in places which came off with a quick citric acid bath. Again it has some scars but as it's og I'm keeping it for originality.

Another mad one from across the channel lol  :daumenhoch:  make sure you grab as many franchises as you can before the 31st otherwise its gonna cost you 5 times more to get em here and then they'll be stuck in port for months before you get your mitts on em  ;)  ;D  :daumenhoch:

Yup, this is probably the last international purchase for a while, at least until things have been sorted and settled down. 👍🏼

Another interesting one added to your collection mate. I know it's OG to the bike and shown in the advert too but I'm afraid I'm a +1 on the "lose the snake post" team  :(

Tyres look ace on the mags  :coolsmiley:

Cheers John  :daumenhoch: she's interesting for sure.
I knew the decision to keep the snake post would divide opinion. If it was bent at all it would have gone but it's not and it is crmo and has thick tubing. The tyres came with the 48s pro class rims that nearly went on my Fred Blood Hustler. I have since swapped the mags for a set of the same that came with my pug. They didn't clean up as well so will suit this survivor/rider build better. The Free Master's mags came up really well so will go on the repainted pug build.

I am torn about the og brakes on this though. They are clean enough but the cables are routed to the left of the caliper and the cable guide on the forks is on the left blade like most bikes. The cable guides on the frame are on the right too. Not very practical but from what I could find out about Star Way is they bought and imported parts and threw them on bikes. I'll probably keep them but it just bugs me a bit.

I have just finished another little job to keep things ticking over...

The freewheel has been stripped, cleaned, greased and reassembled. It is now running silky smooth, as good as new. Little jobs like this are often the ones that give me the greatest satisfaction.

Agreed Damo, quality stuff. I find jobs like that quite therapeutic tbh. It only took half an hour from start to finish  :daumenhoch:

Each to their own i guess, i would spend 3 times as long making sure i had painted a stem perfectly! Ans would find it equally therapeutic! Restoring a freewheel would have me throwing tools all over the gaff!!! :daumenhoch:

:LolLolLolLol: about the tools. Hats off to you because I wouldn't be confident enough to prep, then refinish any painted parts knowing it has to be spot on. Kudos to you !

Progress report...

I have decided to swap out the brakes for the reasons mentioned above.  This is stupid because it means a colour change and different levers, tyres, grips, cables and seat post clamp. I had the tyres, cables and grips so had to buy levers and I'm working on the clamp. I bought a great lever bundle from the museum and a pair match the calipers. The brakes, tyres and grips and levers are on. I discovered the lower rotor cable was damaged so I'm waiting on a replacement before I can finish this old girl off except for the clamp. It is an obvious colour change but I will keep you guessing for now. Maybe this weekend I will have some pics to share.

Oh yeah, nearly forgot to mention I have swapped out the seat too. It suits better than the Dyna Max  :daumenhoch:

I changed my mind about my choice of grips so they have been removed and some others are now on. The og's were two tone Plastiche Cassano mushies, I had some nos of the same but they stood out like a sore thumb, far too bright. I am a lot happier with her look now the replacements are on. Grubby reissue A'ME Tri.

The rotor cable arrived today so that has been fitted and the rotor, stem and bars are in place. The cable I went for was a Shimano road brake cable, fits like a glove. My gamble paid off.

Turned out great Toby. Fantastic job it keeping the OG theme. I'm not a massive fan of the ol pink, well not on a bike at least  :LolLolLolLol:, but really suits the decals and overall look of the build really well. Top work buddy  :4_17_5:.

Cheers Pete, I wasn't sure about the colour change at first. The decision to swap out the brake set up ultimately dictated the pink on white theme. The pink works better than the og purple for me, glad I ran with it fistblump

Agree on the pink vs. purple, defo better, and cant believe they put brakes on that pulled on the opposite side to that which they ran the cable guides - on their own frame! Classic french engineering  :LolLolLolLol:. Oops  :-X.
