Title: 1998 Hoffman Bikes George jr
Post by: Chilli Rinse on November 06, 2021, 06:58 PM
Bought recently on eBay and collected from Croydon, South London. This entry level mid school tank came in og survivor condition with all parts present along with the og decals.
The left hand Dia-Compe MX 101 lever was snapped and needed replacing. The right side was rough so I found one in better condition to use. The og KMC K510s chain had a broken link and needed a good clean up, so I found a new one to use, better safe than sorry. The og Hoffman Shorty grips were worn down and split so I bought some We The People Arrows (130mm) to use. I ordered flanged but I received flangeless. There were no flanged in stock for an exchange so I stayed with what I got. They shouldn't look too out of place hopefully. I stupidly sold a nice rider pair of 90's Hoffman Shorty grips that would have been perfect for this little project.
George was stripped and all parts were cleaned and given fresh grease all over. The frame, forks, bars and seat post were given a citric acid bath to remove as much rust as possible. This revealed lots of nicks and marks to the chrome. I popped the aftermarket pegs in the bath too.
The bottom bracket cups were still rough around the races after cleaning, so I used some new black cups I had laying around in the spares crate. I used the black lock nut that came with them too.
The rims had my 0000 wire wool rub over then washed. The spokes on the front wheel were sandpapered back to a shinier finish. I will get around to the rear spokes soon. I forgot I hadn't done them to be honest. That's a job for rainy day.
The original tubes needed a patch on each and seem to be holding air ok. The Skidmark tyres are cracked but I kept them on for now, they look pretty cool. I've got some Hookworms to use when needed.

Here's the pics from the listing to show you how George arrived. Hopefully tomorrow I will get some of him all finished and looking a little better.
