Title: Repro PK Rippers
Post by: cookem on September 18, 2005, 07:21 PM
Been watching a few PK's on the bay as I want to get one sooner or later. Then by chance, I happen to read a thread on another Old School BMX site that some of them are reproductions and to be careful. Some of those PK afficionados nearly got caught out, so it must be hard to tell the difference.

How do you identify a real one?

Here's the thread link

The one in the picture looks like one of the mild steel skank frames, to be honest with those pictures the only thing that gives it away is the multi coloured decal. I think they were made in the 80's maybe early 90's and this is the first i've seen outside of Asia. i guess it wasn't going to take long for somebody to find one or two and start selling them off as the mcCoy. One of the Asian dudes on VBMX had one he'd found, old stock, hanging in a local bike shop. Once he posted his a couple of the other's from that neck of the woods said they'd seen them too.

All you'd need is a close-up of the welds to see it isn't Alloy.

Check the frame number on the dropouts that should eliminate em!

There's a new one just been listed. Wish I had the dough.

If anyone wants to buy it for me, I can pay you back weekly. ;)

The headtube gusset looks odd as well.

Although a magnet would help the distinction  :)
