Title: ALL HAIL ANDY PRESTON
Post by: mike pardon on January 24, 2007, 01:10 PM
Okay here some shots of Andy, he is heavily involved in kitesurfing a real inovator. He designed some of the very first flexifoil kites. Travels all over the world judging and designing still. Lives with his long time girlfriend Sue in a converted church in Norfolk. Even has his own yoga studio in the back..

feel free to post any more shots..

how kool is this thread,  you hear 22 years later and so on many times :)

for many of us we are now parents, some of our kids are now riding, some better then we was :-[

but to everyone on here it's about memories,  memories of bmx when we where young,  doesn't matter

what level we rode at because we all rode,  with mates, with team mates,  at skateparks and at race tracks,

some have a love of a special bike,  some have a love of a place they rode,  it's all memories, but the best thing

is to meet up with these guys years later that where part of our memories  and to many start it all over again :daumenhoch:

as memories go,  this is a good example, was at rom yesterday, just watching billy ride on a wednesday eve,

sat there for over two hours, must admit, played with my new mobile for most of the time ;D

but watching the boys ride,  they was all tricking the new jump box, now some are rippers pulling loads of

tricks and some are not but as a crew together they clap and applaud everyone who gave it a go :)

now this reminds me when me, pat,  stupps, dave curry, marco, errol and so on rode together, just cheered each

other on, just like i saw last night,  could we have imagined  20 plus years later we'd all be back talking about the old days,

now will billy and his mates who rode last night be doing the in 20 years time,   i think they will ;)

and we will be vintage ;D

Andy, I still think that pic of you with Dave Y, Andy P & Terry J will be a very hard pic to top....ever.  I have seen so many pics over the last twenty years, but that just has something to it, that nothing else will ever have...  4 80's legends in the same pic 20 years on.  Pure quality!  :4_17_5:

A well deserved appreciation thread
One of my idols back then ( I bought AP sliders ,gators and a Yes helmet  ;) )
Although I wasn't fortunate enough to meet the man, I can easily believe all the praise saying how genuine and down to earth he was ,
cos thats the way he came across
Hail Andy Preston

Great thread!

I wasn't a mate of any of the guys in the photo but I did speak to Dave Y a few times and he was a nice guy. However, me and Dave Slade bumped into Andy P a few times at Southsea and he was a top guy. Mentioning no names obviously but a few people back then who had factory rides were a bit up their own backsides (only a couple) but Andy P was a really pleasant guy and probably one of the nicest guys in BMX for that time.

Hat's off to you fella!

Hiya all, i havent logged on here for a few weeks been busy with ALANS.BMX.COM/SHIMANO DXR race team!!
I got up this morning after having a good days racing yesterday at Cheddar both for myself and the team. Munching on my cornflakes and was stoked to see the replies to Andys pics and some of the get together shots.I thought the thread had gone.
I was due to be at the 25th anniversary  raleigh  burner bash on Saturday but i couldnt make it as it clashed with the national in Cheddar .
I dont think Andy has changed in his looks and attitude since we travelled around doing demos and promo stuff all those years ago he still 100% in whatever he does. Funny the path we all take in life when you look back eh?

some one wrote: (This thread is EXACTLY the reason why i love being a RAD member, and exactly why im still so stoked to  be into BMX) never a more true statement..
I never got any really decent surfing shots of me, i surfed all over the place. G-Land in Indonesia is a heavy wave. Wish i had some pics from that. If you ever go to the surfers bar in Rossnowlagh, Co-donegal check out the wall i there, theres a few crackers..

Anyway lets keep the Andy pics coming.. see ya all. Mike

Hi to Dave and Terry again, and Marcus, it was good to see you all again. Cant type too much , im off to the beach tomorrow, i recon it will be about 15 mph so some big ass jumps to be had.
Anyone been to the new skatepark in Swafham, norfolk. ? I saw a news report on it last week, concrete, vert bowl and lines a plenty!! could be good for an old school carving session. (come back chris miller from molecules of motion).

Andy is a truly nice guy :)  I met him at Doncaster Motor Show maybe 85 or 86. He was test riding the Scorpion Brakedancer. I had a Black Mohican and he said i looked like Al Pacino in Taxi Driver  ;D  We took him to our Ramps that were set up behind the Bus depot and showed him some moves ;)  For me he ranks as one of the smoothest of the early freestylers.
Terry Jenkins... ex Torker. He rode with another guy and i cant remember his name. One of them ended up on the same Stunt show i worked on in the late 80s i think  :)
  Great Pics...Great Guys....Great memories  :D

I just spotted Chris Laneys name on this thread and it reminded me of the time Andy Preston came to Farnborough to do a display at a local school. I can't remember how it came about but had something to do with Motorcycle city (who were just down the road) and it was a big thing to have him and Mike Pardon there. At the time Motorcycle City were sponsoring us as the Yes Trick team. Chris, Darren Walsh and Mike Goodman were the real stars of our displays and I was along as chief ramp builder.

The thing that sticks in my mind was the fact that our quarter pipe was a lot wider than theirs but a bit of a funny shape. They couldn't get used to ours and we scared of falling off the edge of theirs.
It was one of the many good days we had, plus I can say I did a display a pair of the big name riders of the day.  ;)

although i didn't get into bmx properly until 1985, i do remember watching bits of bmx beat in 1984.  back then the only bmxer i'd ever heard of was andy ruffell.  however in 84, the ONLY rider i remembered (bear in mind in wasn't really into bmx at the time so had no reason to remember anyone) was Andy Preston... Sorry Mike, I know you won it..... Funnily enough, the only image i remembered from back then was when Andy was told he'd qualified for the final.  He sort of moved his head in numerous directions with the "who me?" sort of look...  That has got to be my first ever memory of BMX in this country.  A true legend.

Could be Mike Cameron your thinking of, he was a friend of mine from Cardiff, rode for Peugot doing shows at holiday camps and Terry was involved with Mike at some point so maybe that was it. He also won the pro flatland when BMX Beat was that Tizer international event in 87.

Hi Folks
The guy in the mg was called Phil, he was a guitarist in the Eddy Laver show Band, the pontins resident band at the time in 1983. Trusting chap eh!
Wasn’t it Julian Parkinson who rode with terry ? wheres he now. I remember him being the same size as andy Irwin is nowthe las time i saw him. That was about 20 years ago now.
I found the shot of the dips in my collection, hope it gets onto the site.
The guys in the photo are, as faras i can remember. From left to right.
Andy? Or Darren? Parr (cant quite remember, sorry man), Pike as himself, John (i can build anything) Lee, Top chap whos father owened the Chorley BMX track. Me in the air on my aero rimmed PK Ripper, with white wall shopping bike tyres! Godfrey Burke, Dave Westwell, Cant remember the big guys name (cant think why!! Sorry bud) and cant remember the other guys name either, appologies again to him.
What a place the dips were, flat run up to a 200 foot really steep drop (if you got it right your wheels just touched down before the rise) then it arced up to flat with a nice lip, happy happy days there.

Talking of John Lee, I remember seeing a video he made with Pike called Goin for the big one. The big one was an ariel on one of the dodgiest quater pipes of all time. If John ever gets a chance he should put it on utube for all to enjoy. I think it had a naked Pike running around in shot, again!
Anyhow Thats about it.
Anyone need any sliders or leg gaiters, let me know.
Also i have a Haro racing devision sticker from 1983 still on the back, anyone need it?
Also have some ultimate Yellow threads, a BMX Action trick team t shirt (BUFF and RL MFM most factory team) some scorpion breakdancer leathers, and other apparel.

Not feeling well today, hence missing Chest-Air. Been watching series 1 of bmx beat on dvd. Great footage of Mike and Andy. I used to love watching them on Saturday mornings for their trick tips. Great to see them on RAD too!

MP AP were my heroes bitd. BMX BiWeekly,,,,, happy days and the Quad was mesmerizing. The Raleigh was from another world. Riding cheap bikes, seeing stuff like that was aspiring. I remember an article on how to make your standard levers trick by bending them and fitting sharp lever grips. I had some red Weinmanns and  made a pair. I felt rad as fook. Thankyou guys.

Thought I'd give this thread a BUMP ....  Both Andy and Mike were massive influences on me BITD ... Probably as much as Bob Haro and Craig Campbell ... They got lots of exposure on TV in the magazines and in the BMX annuals I got for Christmases ...
Andy Preston's Rippers and Quads were always ace with extra cool bits like lever grips and brakeguards...
I got my love of Aero Pros from Mike .. That's the main reason I got one last year.

Does anyone have any other pics or images they could add to this thread ?

Did Kappy ever complete an AP tribute build then ? I can't find any evidence ...
