Following on from Mike's comments about forks on my cruiser i spotted a bit of pattern emerging
Anyway, few photo's from BITD of my Spondon Engineering frame + forks (for a while at least)

I think i've got a test in an old magazine of that frame.
I assume that its the same spondon that make motorcycle frames.

Those Spondon forks look mad!

Dont they call him Sweary Bob at Spondon ??? As far as I know he is still going strong making Streatched swingarams for Hyabususa,a etc

I saw a few of those bitd , mainly local riders ( midlands ) and they ran normal forks .
Those forks are funky as ......... :D

Wow, so much interest in my old bike, thanks for all your comments, glad you like it.
The details as i remeber it.
The frame + Forks were made by the same Spondon Engineering of all Spondon laverda's fame around 83-84. My dad had worked at British Rail with the founder/owner of Spondon Engineering so when a prototype turned up in the Derby BMX club we went to see him. I think the frame i had was one of about 3 prototypes. Another Derby/Notts rider had one too, Rob Spendlove. The forks were superlight but failed at the join with the bottom of the steerer tube fairly early on, relaced with Tange Aero's. In its day it was a light as almost anything out there and rode and Jumped very well, longish wheelbase i think so stable. I had to have the frame repaired a few times around the headtube area but it cried enough one day. I guess i would have had it repaired again but my dad won a scorpion ZX300 frame and forks in a raffleat the Colwick race when Jamie Vince won the Skoda so i switched to that.
I remeber the magazine test came as a bit of a suprise, i guess Spondon had got someone else involved to market it, i dont think they were too worried about it really,too busy with the motorbike stuff and the workshop was still tiny then.
If anyone out there could post the magazine article on the frame i would love to read it again.

Great to see, doesn't look so out there with normal forks though. didn't realise the distributor was a local company either,

you know Spondon still make motorbike stuff?... do you think if you asked them and sent them all the details, drawings etc. that they would make that bmx frame they did that Torker the midlands had? i reckon so... :-\ :-\

The thought had crossed my mind too! I imagine if they did it would be pricey to say the least as it would need a jig making up etc.
Still 24" for me please if your asking! ;D

Gav used to work for Spondon and said he would be interested in doing a bmx frame but has work backed up 6 months making streetfighter frames already

The Norton didn't qualify to race at the TT in the seniors.
The last senior practice/qualifying session was cancelled due to a crash in the sidecar race involving Crowe and Cox.
It did do a presentation lap before the seniors race though!!

Hi Guys.... i tested the original aerolite as i was sponsored by Dorridge cycles who had a hand in the build.. Pauline who owned the shop had a brother who worked at Dawes as a frame builder... he knew them at Spondon so sat down with a few ideas.. so the aerolite was born..
I have pics of me on the 1st frame at Redditch..
Only a handful of frames were built..

I remember the magazine test for it but have never seen one then or up to now.
The Aero-lite was also used for the Acorn magnesium wheel advert
