Title: Old Skool uk track map...
Post by: westy on April 29, 2009, 03:05 PM
I originally posted this over at bmxtalk, but you'll no doubt be able to chip in:

thanks to the credit crunch ive found myself with way too much time on my hands and started mapping current uk BMX tracks on google maps.

I also thought it would be interesting(?) to map the old skool tracks too, but as i was only a wee nipper back in the day i aint to sure where most of them actually were! So, if anyone knows the location of an old skool track that should be on the map - feel free to add it, or let me know where it should be and ill plug it in.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=115038298465873748293.000465f5799bfd152d4c7&t=h&z=10

here the current tracks if your interested: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&t=h&msa=0&msid=115038298465873748293.000454e133805d0932703&ll=52.348763,-1.483154&spn=4.624404,9.799805&z=7&mid=1231932201url

Thanks to all who have either added tracks and email me details so far. But there's still load of old tracks missing (i guess). Cc'mon and chip in let me know where the old tracks were, or get someone on the case who does.

Sorry but I dont know how to add to your map.... but here's my home track. I helped design this along with Phil Cook from Gloucester City Councils Leisure Dept back in 1984

"Gloucester Robins" Track...as it's on Robinswood Hill on Reservoir Rd. The track was actually made in the cut out of the old reservoir basin.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&sll=51.842919%2C-2.234847&hl=en&q=robinswood+hill+country+park&btnG=Search+Maps

The Gloucester track had  agreat car park right next to it by default and was a great day out for the family....its still there and little would be needed to put a cracking track there again, redesigned of course...

Here is the old "Cheltenham Flyers" track..... I had a hand in the design of that as well...rider input lol, along with AMS Motorcycles and a few other bods.

You actually got to it from Arle Rd up a long drive, but for the map purposes St Peters Close shows nearer location...
zoom in and its left to the footy pitch.

was just looking at the map, what about the track near rom?

The romford track is listed as right next to the skatepark but scroll down a bit and theres the track i used to ride when i was a kid.

Its still there, sort off, but i never saw it used properly. I used to ride it around 1985 ish, right through to around 2000.

Dont know when it was used officaly though.

A whole new interest - BMX archaeology!

Most of the old tracks around us seem to have lost completely to redevelopment and health and safety flattening, but there are still gems such as Lordshill (Southampton) where the start hill and berms remain untouched as grassy mounds. Perhaps I should inform English Heritage and get it protected!  Or, could we start restoring old tracks to use our old bikes on?   :)

I race once at the Cheltenham BMX track, I used to live there ages ago (now I am at Doncaster) Looking at google map, the track is not the same I used to remember, it may not be the original, its bumps all diiferent nor its location, the old track as far as I remembered is a few meters from the current track location nearer to the main road under the new housing in this area.

I am hoping other forum reader would chime in to correct me if I'm wrong.

Cheers ! :daumenhoch:

I know of an old school track in tolworth in surrey. Part of it is still there but the rest went to make a go-kart track. There is also a dirt jump track (I thinks thats what you young kids call it :)) in nonsuch park in cheam. I used to ride there back in the 80's when it was just a big hole we used to do jumps in ;D. Happy days. I tried to put them on your maps but failed :(. Hope these add to you collection. Ad

Looking a the map I found the Bulwell track. I raced a couple of NBMXA nationals there in 84 and loved it but I couldn't remeber it's location. Good to see it's still going strong when so many other great tracks have perished.

i took the kids to the Hop Farm in paddock wood near maidstone kent today, there used to be a track there in the early eighties, anyway while the kids were messing about on the rides i asked some of the staff about the track and was told it was still there. so off i ran in the direction pointed out through some woods  to find........................ yep you got it not a lot. the area is now used by tanks when they have the war and peace event there, just a few lumps and bumps is all thats left. major disapointment.

Albury, near Stansted in Essex.
Upwell, Near Kings Lyn an indoor equestrian center and also a very cold out door track.
There was a second track at Ipswich, on a farm that belonged to a TV stunt man. all knackered cars about with cannons in to make them flip. Worst track ever, starting gate off the side of a lorry, but funnily enough the only place I got a first in final.

I thought it had been dug over, but it looks like it is still there.

Also wonder what that little track is next to it - deffo looks like a BMX track - but how many corners?

Last time I passed the Slough track it appeared rideable.  The little track next to it is almost certainly the Radio Controlled Car Club track that was there when I went for the last ever full meeting organised by Brixton BMX Club about 7 years ago.  Unfortunately because of its remote location the track became the target of crossers and idiots who broke into the container and trashed it - familiar story but enough to put anyone off trying to maintain it.  Shame, but that's the fate of many tracks from the '80s and, dare I say, the potential fate of the rash of new tracks springing up in the wake of the Olympics.  Humps

I was just looking at the Birmingham Wheels site on the map. For those who don't know, there where two tracks at this site at the same time. The main track looks to have been obliterated, the other track is still visible but I don't know if it was ever used for racing, I remember riding it to get warmed up before racing on the main track, it had really good berms (much better than the main track) but I don't remember any jumps. Maybe it was built so the local kids could ride around on it instead of killing themselves on the main tracks lethal doubles, anyone else remember them orrible square things?

The second Roch Valley Raiders track in Rochdale is still just about there. The starthill & gate are still there but the track has been vandalised badly.Shame as it is downhill and real fast.

Hi Paul the smaller track at wheels was there first track which was built in 82 and yes it was raced i raced there to race the 83  euro"s i raced there a lot in 82  and a bit in 83 but most of the racing was on the NEW track desigend by ALAN WOODS for the euro"s in 83 and 84 they were both very good tracks  :coolsmiley:

But like you said the first track did have great berm"s  :4_17_5:

WOODY  :)

Cheers Woody,

It was always an exciting to race at Birmingham Wheels, one of the big venues BITD, what a great atmosphere.

Big Trev Robinson's home track if I remember rightly.

Just to say the old Terry's Tigers track in Odiham is missing. To find it go to junction 5 of the M3, follow the A287 about 100 yards, or half way to first roundabout off the M3 south. Look in the trees just to the right of the road and you can still see the track.

There also used to be a track just next to the M3 in Farnborough just to the south side of Junction 4 and right next to the motorway, if you go there some of the berms have survived but the satellite picture does not show anything now.

Also the original Farnham BMX track behind the sports center is not on the map, It was literally between the sports center building and the river Wey running behind it. It survived from 1981 to 86. When on October the 26th through to the 30th Carl Alford, Grant Marshall, Bill Baggs, Terry Painter, Harvey Monkton, Headley Monkton and two or three others including myself built what most people knew as the Farnham track up on Sandy Hill.

I don't know if anyone else can help but there was also another earlier track in Ipswitch on a hillside. I raced there in October 1980 but have no idea where to find it on a map.  I,m sure the Scott Webbs would know?

Hope this helps.

Jay Hardy.

51.54464,0.186081 are the co-ordinates for Brettons track, Still a lot of it there including starthill and gate, and that mental 1st straight still gets your speed right up going into the massive 1st berm.

All the berms are there, just the jumps have been flattened, and it's way overgrown.

The 1st time I raced at Ipswich it was at Landseer park, I thought it had never been moved out of park, just changed its location actually in the park?

You are absolutely right in what you say about the track in the park. But there was a track previous to that on a hillside, somewhere on the edge of Ipswitch. There was a race report on at least one event held there in late 1980. It was in Trials and motocross news. Way back when they were the only people reporting on BMX racing. Because the BMX media in the UK did not exists.

I will follow your lead on the coordinates of the tracks I mentioned above, plus the one in Basingstoke I forgot about, that is still clearly visible from the aerial shot on Google.

Jay Hardy.

Can't do the link things, but locals for me were the old Andover track (early/mid 80s) on Walworth Industrial Estate (near Twinings) and the old Basingstoke one on Popley Way.

Our school in Whitchurch, Hants had a two bike wide track on the school grounds behind the sports hall from about '84 onwards (although it was never used for any organised racing).

Just had a marathon sesh updating the map (well the best I can) and putting it into some sort of alpabetical order  :crazy2:

If ive got any locations wrong then please let me know.

Best way to send me location is to  right click 'centre map here' (on chosen location) then top right there is a button 'link', press it and copy the data from 'paste link in email IM' and paste it in here.

Cheers and Im sure their are lots of tracks not yet mapped!

The Slough track was great! The 1986 world champs was held there.

I thought it had been dug over, but it looks like it is still there.

Also wonder what that little track is next to it - deffo looks like a BMX track - but how many corners?
Slough track still there but all grown over and the small track is for Rc cars.. Remember watching the 86 world champs :)

I see it on the train going to and from London, it looks pretty run down not sure how old it actually is, there looks to be some kind of dirt racing track on the other side of the train tracks but I can't say I've seen that either. It's between Fleet & Winchfield in Hampshire.

All the best for 2012 guys  ;)

As i managed to wangle 2 weeks off work for Christmas i thought id take the opportunity to go out for a couple of cross country rides. I had planned on spending most of my time at summerhill track but the few times i did manage to get there it was bloody freezing or the track was froze lol!
Anyway, id visited the old track at Saltburn and thought id take a ride over there again. Its quite a trek as i live in middlesbrough but never the less it was a fun day out. My mate came along to keep me company (and because i promised him fish and chips from Redcar on the way!).
It was quite a bright day so i took a few pics while we were there. I had hoped to have a blast round it as its survived rather well. However, it was a little damp and muddy when we arrived so i chose not too for the sake of the track!

The Start:

View fom the start:

View to the left of the start:

And the un mistakable print of a Comp III tyre in the start! Someone obviously very eager to race before the concrete dried!!

I'm not too sure who owns the land. There appears to be a public right of way along the outside of the track and there are some large gates, presumeably used to access the track / field at some point. These are chained up but the lock appears quite recent? The track is in pretty good shape and wouldnt take much to restore. Most of the tyres are still present and the grasing horses seem to have kept the growth down to a minimum  :)

I've been meaning to visit a couple of places on the map for a while now and finally got around to it today.

Eastleigh track near Southampton, is grass and overgrown with brambles etc. it's a common area for dog walking with a war memorial but you can still see the starting slope and one old rusty bracket for the start gate still in the ground. You can also make out where the berms and jumps were but it is not a well worn track as shown in google maps anymore.

Even more disappointingly, the Lordshill track again near Southampton is a construction site. The new Oasis Academy Lordshill building is on the exact spot of the old track, which quite clearly looked in pretty good nick on google maps. I think I was at least a year too late.

Never mind eh?

Three Sister (Aston near Wigan) was such an ace track. Used to ride there nearly every Saturday morning as a kid in the late 80's, only raced a few times, cos I honestly wasn't very good, & had a Red heavy metal Burner at the time which wasn't very fast. Could jump the whoops tho, which were quite serious, until one time I came up short and face planted hard. :buck2:

Such a shame it got demolished, just a half a*sed attempt at some kind of nature bog / wetlands in it's place. :'(

Thanks for that Andy, looks like I didn't miss much at Lordshill but at least it would have been rideable.

I found the site of the Eastleigh track just up from the Concord Club, turn left at the first roundabout onto the road that leads to Chandlers Ford and it's opposite where the Cricketers Arms pub is, there's a car park and council maintenance building and then the public park/common area where the track used to be.

Here is my Anni Team Aero Pro on the old start, you can just see a rusty old gate bracket (I think) still in the ground, bottom right.

I added it to the Google map a while ago, it is on there (Chestnut Ave).

Nice to see some pics - it was a basic track but it was all good from the days when we had 3-4 tracks of varying standards in Southampton area and plenty other tracks within a short drive :)

Think this is the remains of what was a small track - Forest Recreation ground, Nottingham. It's hidden amongst the trees.

Hello i could be wrong but the track for tolworth tommahawks on the list is in the wrong place i think. Ive never been ( before my time ) but when ive been told about it i was lead to believe it was on the other side of the road and at some point after was used for r/c cars. The track pictured is for kids mx bikes i think its an inner city project of some kind. Ive tried to look on the area around the track and nothing jumps out but i would be interested to know.

Just looked at the map and then read the whole thread before seeing a post right at the end about what I was going to say.

Surbiton Town/Tolworth Tommahawks is indeed marked in the wrong place. It was on the other side of the Kingston Road, off of Worcester Park Road. I went go karting there late 98 and the starting hill was still there and parts of the track but by the looks of this picture... http://www.surbiton-raceway.co.uk/our_track.htm it is no longer there and in instead a second go kart track.

Might have to ride the 40th birthday build down there next week and take some pictures,   :-\

Alright fella. Good work on the tracks.

I used to race in the deepest darkest depths of Lincolnshire (although might now be South Humberside as they keep changing the border). I notice that there is not much on the map in that area.

The old school BMX track that is missing from your map was based in an old chalk pit in Grasby. Grasby is a small village near Humberside Airport and on the road between Caistor and Brigg. The club I used to race for was the Humberside Heroes and we used this track as our base.

I left the area a long time ago so I am not sure if it is still there. The track did hold a national I believe in the early eighties though. It was a good track.

Regards

Ed

You've got none of the North of Scotland tracks. There were definitely tracks at Inverness (Bears), Nairn (River Raider), Forres (Flyers) and Maryburgh (Monarchs). If you want help with the exact locations, I reckon I could pin down the Inverness & Nairn ones, might struggle with the others.

Great idea doing the old school track mapping, and the one about restoring old tracks and getting them listed with English Herritage!!

Newton Abbot racecourse was my local track back around '82 - '84... South West Scorpions...  Will never forget the day when 12 year old Nicky Dalton appeared from nowhere, hired out some bikes for a fun day out with his mates... and blew everyone away!

Must get on with my search for a DP  firebird mk 1 to build my old bike again...

evening all,    just had a look thru the old school BMX tracks map ,  and neither of the two tracks i used to race at are on there  ..   but then not many people used them and they were not around for long  for differing reasons  ..

First one was Broxbourne Track  in Hertfordshire,   and the site is now the Paradise Wildlife park,  but  back in 82/3  it was a very small private Zoo  and there was a track built in the woods ( what is now the minature woodland railway )    i can remember the small berms and the finish was a table top which one of my friends came a cropper on one day snapping his Ultra burner Forks off !  more fondly and   uniquely was how it was served ..    we used to catch a old double decker bus which had the downstairs seats removed for bike storage and we sat upstairs ,., it used to wind a route through Enfield, Waltham Cross,  Waltham abbey and Broxbourne picking up at Bike shops along the way .. we used to catch it at  ( memory goes a bit here ! )   Days cycles (?)   by Albany park in Enfield Highway  and be dropped back there on the way back after a day up  at Broxbourne woods
Second one was smaller and what we would call a pump track nowadays .. In Higham Hill rec ground in Walthamstow ..    i recall races being held there whether official or not i cant remember  and it was at the top of the field  and built on an old running track area of crushed Asphalt/ash   as i recall.
and last and by no means least ... was our own little homebuilt practice track my mates and me built on some waste ground behind one of there houses  ..  it was on a piece of land locally  known as "the dell"  in Enfield on the A10  directly opposite the Enfield Crematorium ..  we   (ahem!) "Sourced"   a couple of spades, a trolley  and a wheelbarrow  and spent the summer of 83 digging holes all over the field and arranging it strategically  in a organised  way to form three berms and a couple of lumps    but never  got to the dizzy heights of anything you could call a table top !   most weekends   some local kids  would turn up and have a try but never seemed to come back :-(   but we loved it cos it was ours !  lol

Buckmore park in Kent used to have an awesome BMX track, I used to race there most Sundays in and around 1981/2

Sadly it is just a Kart track there now (although if memory serves me correct the kart track did not replace/go over the top of the BMX track)

Track was located at ME5 9QG for your map info or just google Buckmore park.

And some else has already mentioned the BMX track that used to be beside Barnehurst Golf course - also in Kent

Cheers

MrD

Hi, so do you have the Newtown, Powys track c.1982 / 83 / 84 on your list? I have a handful of pics taken at the time but are properly blurry, i have added them below if anyone is interested. I used to race there aged 13 / 14, my dad took the pics but i can't even tell which one is me!

Just a brief introduction.  Tyneside Outdoors (TO) are running a BMX Track Heritage project with young people in South Shields.  The project is looking at the BMX Dirt Track in Temple Park, South Shields and look at all aspects of the track and its context with the park, South Sheilds, and the 1980's.  We've already found some interesting stuff.  We've even found the track! Well parts of it, so far.  We'll shre what we find on a local Facebook Group (Temple Park BMX Dirt Track) and will share when we can on this forum too.

Over this winter we hope to cut back all the overgrown vegetation to expose the full width of the track, around its perimeter.  However, as we're unclear about the original layout and how it work (2 directions?) we need a little help! Check out the photo of the 2nd or 2nd last jump that we've just cleared of 6ft high bramble.

Also, we've got an event on Giving Tuesday, 27th November, when we're asking local people and businesses to lend us their support with some of the hard graft, clearing bramble, shrubs, etc.  Check out the even on TO's FB page.[/img]

Maybe worth sharing on the "Renegade Bmx Crew" page on fb. Lots of riders on there who don't mind getting their hands dirty.  :daumenhoch:
