Profile arm won't fit onto spindle .. HELP!
« on: December 31, 2011, 01:29 PM »
I bought these cranks in a bad way and had them rechromed .. took some effort to get one of the arms off and in the end had to use an industrial press.  Anyway, now i can not get this one arm back on .. i think it is a problem with the spindle as the arm works on another i have on some other cranks.
Is there anything i can do before i have to find another spindle?  it just won't fit over it .. not at all  :-\

Have you tried taking the spindle off the other arm and trying that end in the stubborn arm? Sometimes the old 48 splines are looser on one side (manufacturing tolerances.....).

Failing that, swap the spindles over on the one you know fits, and check if the spindle will fit the other crank arms :)

Is there any signs of the splines being damaged or distorted?

Might be worth carefully running a triangular needle file along the valleys of the splines to clear out any crud, then putting a gentle chamfer on the end of the spindle, just to help ease the arm on. Don't go overboard with the splines though. :daumenhoch:

Get a magnifying glass and closely check the splines for imperfections. If all looks ok then pop the spindle in the freezer overnight. When you have frozen your spindle. Pop the crank arm in a cup of boiling water if the splines are clean it should pull on using the correct. Tool.  :)

I just took the other crank off and tried everything .. it is the spindle .. the arms slide on perfect to the other spindle and the other crank arms won't go on this spindle either.  NOt are whats happened to it  ???  i've cleaned it from all the crap and they look ok.
When i put it end to end to the good spindle it looks very slightly larger in diameter ... took knows how thats happened but now it's no use  :-\

I could try that but no doubt they will be stuck fast for good then  :-\

If you have used a press to get the arm off the spindle may be slightly mushroomed/bigger at the end.

check with a vernier that it is the same diameter at the end as it is further down the spline :daumenhoch:

You could try carefully filing the splines at the end with a triangular needle file,as Magoo said :daumenhoch:

Is it possible that the fixing bolt has been rumped up too tight and spread the end of the spindle?

I think something like that may have happened.  Its not the valleys that are not allowing it on .. more just the overall diameter of the end of the spindle .. recon i'll just try find another  :-\
