adidas custom build. **NOW FINISHED** new thread
« on: May 13, 2013, 10:07 PM »
I've deleted the old build thread as it was getting too long. Here's the new edited one.

I've always been an adidas fan, and have also wanted to do a custom build for a while. The idea to combine the two began at MK12 when I saw these dustcaps being sold by rad member scotty b.

I wanted to base the build on a haro sport/fst shape frame. I missed out on Wini's Peregrine expert, but I got a tip off that member curtispro was selling his mid 90's diamondback venom that had been badged up and powdered as a haro replica. It was in very good nick when I got it, with full haro decals in place. The pic below shows it when I was part way through stripping the powder (was a bugger to get off!).

I wanted to remove all traces of the bike bearing a brand, in this case diamondback (no offense diamondback fans!). I therefore needed the db logos and diamond shaped holes in the gussets & drop outs filling in. I also wanted the cable guides on the frame and forks removing. Only one person to send it to then: Phil (Sawzall) (thanks Phil!). He did an amazing job, and also removed the rest of the powdercoat.

The frame & forks were then sent to Superbike Dan to be powdered in white. As usual, the quality of Dan's work is amazing. Thanks Dan!

I worked on the artwork for the padset and decals and sent them to Steve (Firebird), and Del respectively. Both did a brilliant job as per usual. Del even made me up a decal that wasn't included in my original artwork (the rectangular one of the seat downtube).

Some parts back from the anodisers...

I bought a set of white Mike Buff Z Rims from rad member dj-paul-c. They were in good nick, although yellowing, and the Mike Buff logo had been almost sanded/blasted out. A while ago, I posted up a question on how to dye Z rims. Thanks to Bendycat Eleventeen & Retrodan72 for their help and advice. Also thanks to Gaz rollin72 for his 'how to guide'.

After sanding down with wet & dry

Retrodan kindly gave me a few tins of Madonna blue dylon, and I bought a few more to beef up the dye mix. Oh dear. Despite using salt and boiling water, the dye just would not take to the rims and left them a dirty lavender colour. I bleached them for 4 days, sanded them down using wet & dry paper, bought 5 packets of royal blue rit dye and 2 tubs of salt and here you are!

Laced to low flange suzue hubs and white spokes & nipples

In true hutch owners fashion, of which I am one ;D, here's all the parts laid out.

Finally finished. Hope you like it.

Parts list:

Mid 90's Diamondback venom frame & forks bought from curtispro. (Fixed by Phil Sawzall, re-powdered by Superbike Dan, and decals by Del. Padset by Steve Firebird).
NOS Skyway EZ II bars (some storage marks, so re-powdered by Dan).
New A'me cam grips.
Original 1984 Dia Compe Tech 3 levers. Stripped by myself, then anodised by CCA.
NOS Formos MX 1000 brakes with quick release. I removed the quick release to the front brake & did a Potts mod.
NOS Team Cycle brake shoes.
New unbranded cables & inners.
New Ruption Stem with hollow bolt. (The £4.99 ones from ebay). Painted white and lacquered by me.
NOS Epoch headset bought from Spartacus.
ACS Z rims bought from dj-paul-c. Dyed blue with some help & advice from Retrodan, Bendycat Eleventeen and Gaz Rollin72. Thanks for the free dye Dan!
NOS Suzue low flange hubs from Biagio (desperate times!). I got a really good rear hub from Tony (Torkerdude180), but couldn't find a front one, hence the purchase from Biagio.
New white spokes & nipples off ebay.
Custom adidas dust caps from Scotty B.
NOS Kenda 20x1.75 freestyle tyres from Rainers in Germany.
1 set of used skyway 26tpi axle extenders from Mark Wini. The other set were NOS pink ones off ebay (silly money!). Both stripped by myself and anodised by CCA.
Donut seatclamp. Bought from a rad member, but can't remember who. Again, done by CCA.
Tuf Neck Chainring bought used from ebay. CCA again.
NOS Sugino spider from ebay (I think!).
Takagi 175mm crank from ebay (I think). Re-chromed by Leigh Metal Polishers - Thanks to Lenny Badbaldie for the recommendation.
New unbranded chainring bolts.
New YST bottom bracket.
New KMC chain in white.
NOS VP 555 DX style pedals (either from Jai or Gaz Poolysheriff - Can't remember, sorry!).
New Nitto layback Cr-Mo seatpost and new Kashimax RS seat from Japanese based ebay seller Natsukashi BMX (Excellent service)
Seat guts from Mark Wini.

Apologies to anyone that I've forgot to thank for their help in getting this build together.

That is ace Andy, really nice balance of colour.

I could see some trendy trainer shops would go nuts over that as a store piece

Looks good. But shouldn't the chainring be on the other side of the spider?  :daumenhoch:

Lovely project, mate, but I am confused.... where have the Diamond cut outs on the Dropouts disappeared to?

Am I missing something?

On the outside?  No - the spider has an offset.  The chainline would be about 8mm out if he fitted it the way you describe.   ???

The bike looks pukka now that it is all done.   :daumenhoch:

I like custom theme builds - not many being done at all so it's refreshing to see something other than a stock remake.  :daumenhoch:
