I have just purchased a set of black Shimano DX pedals. I am getting them blasted and redone black but wanted to know if they were originally anodised or painted? Its hard to tell from the original coating that’s left on them. Thanks all!

They were coated.

Get em sanded back to how they are meant to be and powder away.

i particulary like the crackling sound, it reminds you to keep peddlin.....when the sound stops,you fall off...

i think on the black ones the paint on the raised shimano logo was ground down to bare metal?

Yea your right there Bob. Its gonna be fun getting that looking right after powder. Hope they turn out better than the Nippon brakes I just did, had to repaint the names in after painting the arms. Hmm, they look really nice now, lol. They were worth about £30 when I started, now worth about 30p! Gotta laugh.......

Airfix brushes. You could always get a pot of metalic silver and do the logo on the pedels

Not too good with the brushes, found that out on the brakes. Was told I was supposed to use releasing fluid or something before repainting them, whoops! I think I will have a go at carefully filling off the paint on the pedals around the logo, if it all goes wrong you can buy them off me, lol.

You wouldn't have some advice on indented logo's though, iv'e messed me logo's on my brakes up a treat..... $:-\$

I THINK they were either spray painted very thinly or indeed anodized as I was looking for black ones for some time and asked quite a few people and they said anodized. I had some silver ones powdercoated and the paint was way too thick for me to sand down the lettering to silver. Biagio has NOS black ones I think, ask him..

if its indented you can rub a good quality oil based pastel over it, wipe it off carefuly which leaves it in the nicks.....

try a pad for the proud ones.....maybe a sanding block tightly wrapped with cotton dabbed in pain. remove excess, amd dab away..

Thanks for the info Kelly and Obe. I might have a word with the powder coaters, they must be able to adjust the thickness of paint. I don't really want to bother Biagio as I don't buy anything off him. Obe, on the advise you gave, are these methods you have tried? If so I could be interested in some more info if you don't mind. Thanks all!

i have tried it on indented things before,like dice,and gear diagrams on gear knobs....worked fine...

All the DX pedals were painted

I just stripped a blue pair that had been hand painted black to try and get a blue pair again and what happened hay presto a silver pair (I thought they were anodised but apparently not)

The original coating looks like a white base coat with a candy type colour appied over it, apart from black ones which are plain black. Just for info the shimano logo is always the same colour as the pedal I sanded the logo silver on my original black ones (as most people did).

P.S. I think powdering them would make them pretty slippy as the coating will take the sharpness off the pins

Thanks Andy. Well that's something I didn't know, I would have bet my arse on the coloured ones being anodised, learn something new everyday. Im positive the ones I have are original and un-touched since new though and they have the Shimano logo in silver (As in no paint on it)?

Biagio has told me before that the blue were painted (and the black obviously) but the gold were anodized. Don't know for sure but I have a feeling the red were painted also. None of them had the raised lettering in silver, but as Andy says lots of us sanded them back to silver BITD.

I still have one pair of NOS gold left, and am having to resist putting them on my new school ride, they would look rather sweet!

red were painted,as mine stripped in nitromores,right down to the alloy.

Blue were coated in this funny plastic stuff, but Nitro tears it off.
