198? Cyclecraft 24 Cruiser build - COMPLETE,
« on: September 14, 2016, 08:37 PM »
Hi All,
Been a while since my last build, bagged this frame and with Tange forks eBay a couple of months ago.
All in great condition it's been powder coated and another decal set added but that's all coming off for a respray, haven't decided on colour but I have some lovely blue grape pearl to use.
Parts are coming together, apologies to the aficionado' conoisseurs among you as some of the parts are new school/repro but decent kit.
If anyone out there can help me with serial number to date I would be so grateful, looking at bmx museum it looks to be mid to late 80's, but would be great to know the build year.
Anyway here is the beginning...

In my experience there is no way of dating from the serial, which appears to have no rhyme or reason on how it's written.

Whilst it's your bike and its up to you what you do, it would be a massive shame to bugger up those decals  :'(

Are they not the repro decals from Cyclecrafts relaunch a few years back?

Hi, I'm sure they are repro decals, anyway too late they're gone! Had a look at frog and Cyclecraft so can get some new ordered once painted.

Just trying to figure out if I can remove the powder coat myself otherwise I will have to get it blasted, I hate powder coat >:(

fook Frog off, you'll have time to paint it twice before that muggy c**t sends out the decals

Oh dear! Doesn't sound good, I will buy direct from Cyclecraft or have Gil from retro decals make a set then.

A new school bike would be classed as an old school by the time the decals get to you from frog

Lovely! My favourite bike that. I'll have one one day.

I'd strip the powder and spray in multiple colours like they would have back then.

Nice score.
Gertcha!

Now that I really like, I plan a few red parts on mine amongst the bling, would love the original forks too but the Tange that came with my frame are in lovely condition so unless by some miracle some Cyclecraft come up for sale these will suffice.

Have you tried 'Synstrip' ?? I've had very good results with it. The only down side of it is, 1/ it only comes in 5ltr containers, 2/ it's quite expensive due to quantity and 3/ it has a shelf life of a year, so you need to do a lot of stripping. Put a shoutout to see if anyone has a spare 1ltr.
Good luck.

Cheers Custardlips, have had a good search on web and bay and ordered a litre of power strip, looks similar to the synstrip, I will report on its effectiveness.

Here is a sneak at the wheels to go on...

Don't get any on your bike stand else you'll be repainting that

Thanks I was very careful  :daumenhoch:

Anyway here she is stripped raw, really happy with the condition, I found a really tiny ding on the seat tube which I have metal filled and cleaned off some welding spatter before a couple of coats of zinc primer.

Tonight I cold set the rear drop outs and forks to 120mm and 100mm to accept the Phil Wood hubs.
