I know sod all about mid skool but find myself getting more and more interested in them so whats the most desireable/sought after mid skool bmx bike in general? and what makes a good Mid skooler? interested to know your thoughts guys

PS..Is it mid school or mid skool?

There's no real holy grail tbh (and it all depends on the slant you have on it really - be it race, street, park or dirt) it was a time in bmxing (especially in the early 90's) when there wasn't a lot of us about, there were fewer parks than now for def (and the smaller ones were generally built by shit companies fleecing local councils).

Mids more about the battered up bikes that tell a story rather than the carpet queens; although just my opinion, nothing saddens me more than seeing a mid survivor stripped and repainted looking like it's been rebult more times than Daniella Westbrook's septum.

then have a butchers online via google or here at the bikes, pick one and you're away. Some of the classics to look out for (not necessarily rare) are

S&M:

Dirt Bike, Holmes, HAF.

Standard:

Bicycle Motocross, STA, Shorty/Lengthy

Hoffman:

TAJ, Condor, Flash

T1:

Progression, Barcode

DK:

General Lee, SOB, Pro/Pro-XL

To name but a few. A few of the rarer frames were generally not that great - they're rare cos a: they snapped, and b: they made very few of them because of point a.

In fact, it's been a while since I saw a good Standard Shorty/Lenghty build. You'd see fecking loads of em being thrashed at skate parks in the 90's in posher areas.

89-90??? Lol. Early 90s through to about 03 and the introduction of mid bottom brackets and internal headsets.

As far as freestyle bikes/frames, then the King Liberty is probably top of the pile. 1 inch or 1 1/8th headtube, it doesn't really matter. Score one of those in any condition and you've won the lottery. Early Solids, Metals, T1s, 2Hips, Standards, Hoffman's, Kinks and a few more besides. The more overly built frames or limited production runs, the higher up the grail range you go but of course, it's all subjective. One man's meat is another man's poison.

Cool thx for the info I have heared of a few and saw an S&M race bike a while back and really liked it but it was almost a grand!

The Pashley frame I bought from Ed was not only very rare, but also cheap as fook considering how much they cost new

(which kind of explains the rarity factor)
I've seen prices going up rapidly as 'mid becomes the new old' but that bike still didn't cost too much to build - might not win any prizes but I'm very find of it

I'd just add a bit I forgot to pop in earlier on, and that's also the fact with mid bikes that they're (although in some cases heavy as fook) still very ridable today - the geometry was sorted out a bit more in the mid period.

I've got a crap load of stuff here, including stuff like an 88 S&M Maddog, and do you know what brings me more joy? My old beat up Holmes I can still get on and piss poorly ride nowadays.

Maybe grab something light-ish in the race category (like that mono) and go down the local pump track - I can guarantee you'll enjoy it more than a carpet queen

A grail is normally a bike that means something special to someone. To Dans point, it could be a fairly common bike, or low end model, that has sentimental value to the owner / buyer.

If you want to know what are the desirable bikes thats a lot simpler to nail down. Pick a rider owned brand, and choose one of their early models from an early production run.

Like Jon says... a grail bike is usually personal thing. If you're after for an early 90's race bike perhaps keep a lookout for...
TNT pro xl... Freeagent Limo... S&M Holmes... Hyper Metro... just to name a few. You should be able to pick up a decent f&f for about the 200 quid mark.

Pretty much agree with what’s already been said, there are far too many stand out bike from each genre, race, flatland, street, vert, dirt etc. I also firmly believe there are two distinct generation of mid 90-96, 97-04 both different styles bikes from very different manufactures.

Stand out bikes for me personally though would be

1st Gen Hoffman Condor
1st Gen Hoffman Big Daddy
1st Gen Hoffman Taj
Morales - flatland
Standard shorty / lengthy
‘91 Haro Ground Master
WAL Riot
S&M Holmes
S&M Dirtbike
Peregrine Craig LePage

All very much what I’d class as first gen mid school.

Some of the most desirable bmx's in the midschool era were the hard to get and rarely seen at the skatepark rider owned company brands that came out in the late 90's - Terrible One, fbm, Metal etc.

I lusted after a Terrible one progression and then a barcode but just couldn't justify forking out over £400 for a frame

They are sought after and fairly rare now, but prices haven't really surpassed their original price tags yet in most cases

Dannywhac hit the nail on the head, Rare was usually because it broke or it was shit when it was new. A bit like old school really. But look what’s happened with rare prices there. I’m an oldschooler really but had a go at riding in the mid 90,s had a couple of different. S&M and Hoffman’s. Best rider in my opinion is a 1” dirtbike or Holmes depending how tall you are.
