Bottom bracket/crank spindle
« on: June 24, 2018, 11:11 PM »
Hey, fairly new to the whole maintenance side of things. I’ve been out practising stuff on my bmx and had a little try if my friends, his pedalling was so much smoother and “grind free” so I’m looking into replacing some parts. I’m not sure exactly what I would need to replace, is it common to replace bottom bracket and crank spindle at the same time or is one more prone to wear than the other? I’m not 100% on what both do truth be told. Just putting out the feelers to see what’s what at the moment. Any help or advice greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What set up do you have, One piece cranks or three piece cranks?

If it's new school almost certainly 3-piece (the crank arms are separate and bolt onto a spindle)

Moving this thread to tech/resto as you may get a better response in there ;)

Crunching could be a sign that your bearings are on the way out or there's some shite in there - if they're not a sealed unit stuff can get in
New BB wouldn't cost much for a new school setup - recommend getting a sealed one if regreasing your current one is no good

Ah cool thanks. Yeah I think it’s maybe like 5/6 years old, seen better days but I picked it up fairly cheap so can’t complain about giving it some TLC.
I see there is a bolt that goes through the crank into the bottom bracket, I assume this would mean it’s a 3 piece set up?
