1986 street styler build
« on: September 07, 2019, 08:47 AM »
OK so after my 1980 Mongoose / ACS build I am now building a 1986 Skyway Streetstyler. Going for an Odyssey theme this time.

I have white Skyways and white Odyssey 2000 brake calipers and also an Odyssey OPC and Chainwheel so looking for other Odyssey parts to complete it.

Frame forks and bars all blue.

Going for something like this (the bike not Matt)

Looking forward to see this. They are very underrated the Streetstyler.

Thanks. Not really sure why, the frame is virtually the same as the beat (apart from the downtube shape), unless anyone has information to the contrary.

Still full chro-mo.

My Streetstyler has a made in Taiwan  and has the sticker on the down tube, and my 85 Streetbeat was made in the USA, plus has TA cut outs on the fork drop outs.... that's the only other bits I can spot. Look forward to following this build, I loved building my Styler  up.

Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. Miss you loads Dad

There are a few differences between the Styler and Beat.
First off, as already been mentioned the tubing is all round on a Styler whereas the beat has an oval down tube and seat tube.
You can easily spot the difference from a distance without even seeing the decals because on a Beat the top tube meets the down tube before the head tube whereas a Styler with the round tubing does not touch at the head tube and there is a gap between the two.
Also on a Styler there will be a welded on washer for the rear brake on the brake bridge.
Also on some Stylers there will be two tiny holes behind either side of the brake bridge.

Then come the forks. On a Styler they will all be the tapered forks with Skyway embossed on the end.
85 Beats will have the standard drops on the forks. Early ones with the Skyway cut out like the TA, later ones without when they ran out of them.
From 86 when the two tone beats came out production all went to Taiwan. The forks on the Styler and beat both became the same after that.
87 Beats saw the introduction of AD990 brakes on the rear.

Hope this helps
Steve

Slight bit of movement in September:

Odyssey seat clamp
White Tyres (although now fitted I am not entirely sure).

Also still need to change stem, but no joy with white (or even silver) Odyssey at the mo.

So October saw new grips, levers and 6 bolt Odyssey stem fitted.

Just need to find a white seat... Grabber or hotseat  or even dominator.

Really Nice to see this  8)

Funnily enough I built a bike roughly based on the other half of that advert :)

Yours is more true to the original.

I used it as general inspiration but thought the blue tyres made it look heavy and wanted to focus on Odyssey parts.

Final build photos coming soon

So almost done.

Just the chain and rear brake cable to fit then I can final fit everything and tighten it all up proper.
