BTW, do I need to get the f+f rechromed 1st, or is that part of the process?

I think yu will need a good chrome underneith and no, it would be a separate thing. This smoke effect though is mentioned in the same breath as 'bright nickel' although my leary is deffo chrome underneith... the plot thickens

I'm persistant if nothing else.

I think I've fount the company who developed the effect, based in the US but very close to me. I now have the name for the guy who is product manager for this effect and will call him today to source a place who can do this.

I'll post soon... or you could just spray it :LolLolLolLol:

mmmm....interesting...

Spoke to the fella and he said it ain't 'tricolor smoke' on the turbo which we thought it could be cos it wasn't invented until the late 80's - too late for this era.

He explained that loads of finishers went out of business in the 90's as trade was moved to cheaper countries and so some of these finishes possibly don't exist any longer. He was very interested though and has asked me to forward any pics to him so he could decipher what it is. I have a few but if you have any good shots of the original finish that show the blue tint send em me quick and he will hopefully tell us what it is.

Cheers

Oh and it would be expensive. You would need to strip the frame, polish it, nickel coat it, polish it again, nickel coat it, polish it again!! then mince around with a nickel base and lacquer layers!!

Where's that spray can!

Here is the reply i got:

Andy, the finish you talk about is a clear electrophoretic lacquer which is then dyed. It is usually coated over nickel plate. The equipment for doing so, is expensive and not practical to do your self. You could try Merridale Polishing and Plating (0121 556 3636) or Ashton and Moore(0121 236 6234) they both have the lacquer but not the dye. They may ask you to pay for the dye which also could be quite expensive.

If we ever find the solution it will be ammazing and no doubt there will be a few people after it ! I would love it for my NS ride ! the prob I was told many times was the size of the bucket in which they plate it in !

WE will get there and I am not gonna spray it black although I have been tempted to do it met blk / pearlescent but I just cant bring me self to do it

Lets keep hunting I cant believe all the metal finshes and associations cant find a co that can do this in the Uk
