I'm thinking of getting some wheels built up - to my own preference,

i've read Stidds thread, but i've never built wheels before, any clues to how much a shop would charge to build a set of wheels if I supplied the hardware??

Give it a go yourself - it's really easy and quite satisfying once you've finished

I am tempted, but wanted a ballpark figure of cost before I start bending spokes !

ballpark figure £20 - 30 per wheel

that should be built and trued

if you buy all the bits new from places like alans or cyclesport they will do it for minimal cost

always worth having ago first esp if its not a rider

That adds quite a bit to the cost of the wheels, so i guess it makes sence to buy wheels complete/built unless you build em yourself?

I'm going to have a go at building my own wheel, I'm just going to copy the other already built wheel I have. I was told to take particular attention with the spokes around the valve. I'll take it to a shop to be trued.

I started building wheels from a thread like Stidds a couple of years ago and got a bit confused so I copied an existing wheel for my first pair then after a couple of pairs and lots of mistakes I reread the thread and suddenly it all made sense. Takes me about 2 1/2 hours to build and true a wheel now and i think I've probably done 15 - 20 pairs.

I used Sheldon Browns guide, might be useful to read his and Stidds together where one seems vague the other might give you a clue.

This is a good shout, as I'm having a similar dillemma myself. I'm not phased about having a go at building the wheels myself, but whether it would be cheaper to buy all components from Alans/Vertego and let them do it?

I'm after some 20"x1.50/1.75 chrome wheels for my F1 build, and Biagio has some Araya's on the Bay for around £120 already built.

What d'ya think? $:-\$

i would think if youre buying all new and from one place get them to do it or buy already built

if you are having a bit from here and there have a go home building

my local bike shop charges me labour only and does it for £15 a pair

I decided to start building my own wheels as my LBS charges £20 per wheel for building and £10 per wheel for truing. I thought to myself that it cannot be that hard.

I was right, I started out by using the guide on Sheldon Browns website and also had a fully built wheel with me for reference. It took me about an hour to build my 1st wheel, now I can lace a wheel in about 5-10 mins.

I think that it is not only the money that it saves, it really gives you a great sense of achievement.

Have a go, you really cannot do anything wrong.

seriously though. i really fancy havin a go at this ive got some nice polished araya aeros, will get some spokes and hubs to go with em and have a bash wish me luck

I have to agree with the give it a go route, I did and used Stidds excellent guide for lacing, (I found this easier to follow than the Sheldon Brown site, that said there are other patterns for reference on there).

The wheels on my Kuwi and the Mini MRD are my own work,

as for truing I used the SB guide and bought a truing stand, although if you have an old pair of forks they will do mounted in a vice!!

The guy I use charges me £10/wheel for labour and £10/wheel for spokes, but usually I supply my own spokes (since I went to him first time and he couldn't get the size I needed).

it costs 27 quid here. per wheel. it's not difficult to do.

Give it a go yourself mate, as someone else said earlier in the thread, it's pretty satisfying, plus it gives you a better idea about how they go together and makes truing, etc of your own sets that bit easier.

Copy another wheel for the ideas, use stidds' thread for advice and keep it real methodical.

You can get a wheel pretty much true and with no egg shape before even going near a truing stand (or using your frame / forks).
