Mongoose Cali - Nearly Ready for the Museum...and Riding!
« on: February 09, 2008, 04:06 PM »
Bought this last month with the intention of using it as a rider, was pretty much same, needed a basic cleanup, polish and for some reason there was a buckled tyre on the front (Cheng Shin),well it had a bump in which i couldnt flatten...

I haven't seen this in the Museum from when it was originally built,so may submit it if it's up to it?

Stripped and re-polished all the parts, replaced a cracked Weinmann adjuster & a pad which had a nasty stain on it,re-did the rims lightly and added some extra gold 'bling' parts, just enough to compliment the yellow part of the Mongoose graphics and just to break up the monotony of the Red n Chrome.

Added the Gold Alloy chainring bolts,Skyway Pro Pads/Fins,an earlier Mongoose Stainless Steel seatpost ('cause it was v.nice! & i couldnt find a Renthal),also Red Comp III's all NOS.

I always wanted one of these BITD,& I'm not quite finished with the Cali yet,but thanks so far to Jezza (the original resto  :daumenhoch: ) , John H from the Burner forum (who sold me the bike, wanting to sell complete rather than breaking it when he could have got way more £££'s for it)

And finally, allowing me to stamp my little bit of individuality onto it & upgrade a few parts...The 2 Matts (BigDog) :daumenhoch:

Credit goes to Jezza & John H originally,i've just been handed the batton to continue the Cali Legacy!  ;D

It's a Rare,so i'm told,(for the UK,anyway) U.S. Metal Headbadge model,so i gotto do a tiny bit of resto on that as well.

Very nice mate, but put the full chromo frame decal on the top tube by the headset where it belongs instead of on the seat tube  :daumenhoch:

Nice One Fellas!

To be honest, theres a couple things niggling me,the headtube badge has a scratch on the black part, and decal wise the "Mongoose" downtube decal seems to have a few bubbles in. Looking underneath the frame it looks like the edges overlapped unevenly so maybe they were put on slightly rushed...Either way both these things can be rectified i think.

It looks to me that there are varying quality of repop decals for the Mongoose,so hopefully someone can point me in the right direction?

I'll rectify the Cromo decal positioning at the same time too  :daumenhoch:

I have the Mongoose Ammaco Catalogue (signed by Ruffs - he seemed to sign alot at Demos) but i'm not going to be anal about doing a complete homage to the model in that.

No disrespect to the "stapled to frame warranty card posse" but BITD,whenever anyone got a new bike to race we always changed the odd bits 'n customised slightly, and as i look at the Cali now,i'd've been well chuffed to race that bugger back then on the budget i had.

Love or hate Mongoose's,the Californian sums up (to me) all that was great about the 83-85 era of BMX. A bike that (back then) lots of people aspired to,it was not so cheap that everyone had one,but not so expensive that it was out of reach to your average kid on the street...

This is the one without the pro class bars.

And below my lastest Cali build with pro class bars.

That's a really clean bike. Stunning. Nothing fancy, just good old school quality. Like it.

Daft question. Where did you get the gold chainring bolts from?
