Hello All

Apparently, you all love a resto story...so here's mine...meet my 1984 GT Pro Performer - serial number 6841121.

My dad bought this frame & fork set, together with a suitcase full of parts to build it up from a trip to the states in July 1984.
As you can see from the first pic is was originally white.

I rode it at the various skateparks around the country until 1989, changing bits along the way, including a major colour change in 87 to baby blue and pink (weren't the 80's so tasteful?!).

At the end of 1989, I sold it to a mate for Â£80 to fund some university partying. And didn't see the bike or the friend again.

Fast forward on 16 yearsâ€¦

June 2005 - I decided to get back into BMX to try and get fit after a couple of illnesses. I impulse purchased a DK Six Pack while buying a bike for my daughter and soon realised that new bikes were damn heavy! (or maybe just the DK?). So I hit the net to try and find an old Performerâ€¦it wasnâ€™t going to be easy.

July 2005 â€“ My search for an old Performer wasnâ€™t getting very far and whatever I bought would never replace my original bike (sentimental mush). So I bit the bullet and tracked down the old friend I sold it to 16 years ago. To cut a very long story short â€“ he still had itâ€¦in a barnâ€¦untouched since the day he bought off me! He was actually keeping it just in case I ever wanted it back. Top, top bloke. Itâ€™s now safely back at home.

So, here it isâ€¦the first pic below is from July 1984 and the others were taken at the weekend.

I have stripped it down and salvaged a couple of the parts. The MCS stem and the pink Tuffs cleaned up beautifully (the Tuffs are almost like new!). The MX1000â€™s arenâ€™t bad, but are going to take some work. Anyhow, Iâ€™m going to put it back to white with black parts (however, this time with black Tuffs). The frame looks rusty, but it is only surface and comes off with a cloth (phew).

Biagio over at Vert-ego is going to strip and then powder coat the frame, forks and bars for me and rest of the bits Iâ€™m going source from the â€˜net. No doubt, Iâ€™ll be posting soon for your help in tracking bits down!

Anyhow, enough talkâ€¦here are the pics! Any advice or parts ideas would be greatly appreciated!

What did you use to clean up the tuff's? was it simply soapy water? or did you use anything special?

Just hot soapy (washing-up liquid) water on the tuffs and WD40 to shift the grease on the freewheel. Real easy.

Are you sure you don't want to restore it to exactly the way you had it previously?

cool story ,i resto it the same as pic ,i`m doing the same with a bike i had as a kid and same colour wheels with a few tweak`s here and there

I agree, that's a great story. A top mate you got there! I wouldn't be changing the tuffs as they have come up mint. I have just finished my GT (With pink tuffs) theres a pic in the freestyle section under "First build since 82". Just can't believe your luck with getting it back, did you have to give him £80 or was there a charge for the storage on top,lol.

I had it bead blasted and two-pack acrylic sprayed for £75 (frame, forks and bars)...so not bad at all!

A guy just outside High Wycombe did it. He does loads of bikes and was recommended by Quadrophenia.

The two-pack acrylic finish is a bit deeper and more shiny than powder coating, but not quite as strong.
