Freeagent Pro Long or Limo. 21"tt.
profile 175mm cranks
profile whippit 44t chain wheel
profile xl stem with homemade spacer
S&M race xlt bars new school
dxr brake lever, seventies slick cable, bulldog caliper, doesn't work :-( have some new pads to try.
araya aero with suntour sealed front.
araya aero with suzee sealed rear. shimano 16t free wheel.
comp 3 reissues
gt seat clamp
generic post
s&m seat

Rides nice apart from the brake. The aim was to get on the track to help make the numbers up at the first north region event to try to ensure we can keep the old school racing alive in the north and spread the love county wide.

Largely through the ownership of a VDC-built Trident, I’ve become increasingly interested in Free Agents. I loved the story behind the name and idea (as explained further in the extract from Jay Stark’s interview with Voris Dixon below) and finally picked up this '84 version. It’s built around an ‘84 frameset (the 8-digit serial - on the non-drive side dropout - is 1284****), which I think makes it one of the early ones built by Brad Shoup in Beuna Park, California rather than VDC, as Voris Dixon was shutting up shop around that time. At first I thought the green was a spray-bomb job but both the paintwork and the era-correct decals are in the condition you’d expect after 30-odd years. The TT length is 19 1/8” and there is no chainstay brace. It was sourced from California along with the bars, which measure 27 ½” with a rise of 8 9/16”, so I think are original Free Agent Pros. With both the paintwork and decals showing their age, I went for a survivor look using old school parts wherever possible. Nothing fancy, just a simple build, along the lines of a budget-racer from the mid-80s. Check out the photos below, and here’s an extract from Jay Stark’s interview with Voris Dixon:-

JS: On the racing side, did you have any pros?

VD: You know Brent Shoup? He "supposedly" started Free Agent all by himself?

JS: Supposedly?

VD: He rode for me, and his mother Yvonne sold the Free Agent frames. Put it together.

JS: This I got to hear!

VD: I saw a pro that was in-between sponsors, and he had "Free Agent" on his jersey.

JS: You mean Greg Grubbs?

VD: Yes! That was him. I loved that. So I picked up on the name and went over to Yvonne and gave her $1000. I told her to open up a checking account. I told her, "I don't believe in advertising, so let's see if it works." "Here's the name of the company, "Free Agent". I will build all the bikes, and you run with it." So that is where Free Agent came from.

JS: Amazing!

VD: I still own half of it. But, I don't know who owns the other half. It has been sold at least once. I still have all the paper work that says I own half of it. And I have never been paid off…

Penny Dixon: So can we retire?

VD: Next time I get to California, I am going to ask Gary (Turner) to find out.

I have been to the Free Agent website. I read all this crap about how Brent Shoup started as a one man shop and had a better dream…all this stuff. I said, "You're full of shit! That was me!"
Yvonne, she was a heavy set woman. And Brad was her husband. He was then making the stuff in the garage. She lost 40 lbs., bought a Corvette and skipped town to Vegas. So he (Brad) ended up running the company. I think he is the one that ended up selling the company.

I still have some invoices that I billed to Free Agent. See, she never paid for anything. I gave her everything. I built all the frames and just gave her an invoice. When she sold frames, she took all that money and put it into advertising. I just wanted to find out if advertising worked. It cost a hell of a lot of money to advertise.

Thanks for looking! :daumenhoch:

1986 Freeagent 24"

This frame & fork set was previously owned by Mike Miranda who raced this even though he was with the team 2 years later as he preferred the slightly bigger frame of the 86. It was purchased on Craig's list in the California directly from him & there's a thread about it on the museum here..

http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=5395034

The purchaser put the frame on Ebay not long after & I managed to pick it up & had it imported in to the UK, its been my daily rider ever since
