Redline Forklifter Plate. Scan and exact measurements needed
« on: February 26, 2009, 08:24 AM »
I've been after a Redline Forklifter plate for some time now, so I contacted Big Daddy Plates and asked them if thy could knock something up for me.

They said they could if they had the exact dimensions.

Has anyone got a plate and a scanner?

Thank you

That one on ebay is a copy anyway!!  :LolLolLolLol:

Original

Copy on EBAY

Did Redline ever produce a different design, other than the Original Race and Freestyle Versions?

I've just been reading some 1991 BMX Plus's and the Redline Pro Racers were all using Forklifter plates that differ from the original design.

They looked like the 2nd Picture shown.

So the plate in the second picture must be a later generation of the Forklifter plate (unless its a copy)!!

Yeah, I've seen that one Mileyboy!!  :daumenhoch:

Its still a copy though.

Crooch has sent a tracing of his plate!!

I'll see how much Big Daddy charges for making one up!!  :daumenhoch:

Was the the original Forklifter Plate with the 3d Mouldings and raised Redline (top-middle of plate)?

or was it a Flat 90's version of the plate (2nd Gen or 3rd or...........)!!

I already have a tracing of Crooch's 2nd gen plate!!

I would like a tracing of the 1st Gen plate to see if the was any change to the layout between the plates!!!  :daumenhoch:

Moley, get pics up of the ones you have from Crooch etc, if its different then i can scan or trace  :daumenhoch:

I am building a replica Redline Race Bike from 1985 with Forklifters/Forklifter Stem and needed a plate. I missed a few originals on ebay last year, the race versions are pretty common, its the freestyle version which people seem to go mad for thanks to RL Osbourne donning them on his Redline...

I posted a wants ad on RAD April 08 last year, Darren Wood replied said he had one from his old SE racing days and good on the fella he remembered a couple weeks ago in Feb!

I'd already bought one from ebay last year $20 in the packet, thought it was mid 80's but turned out to be mid-90's as a couple months later I bought some Redline catalogs and spotted it is featured as a new product in the Redline 1996 catalog where it says "all new for '96". So thats no good for my planned "era correct" mid eighties build.

On the inside cover 1996, Greg Hill can be seen sporting one exactly like I bought for $20. Same font/color etc.

Heres the pics from the 1996 Redline Catalog. This plate is a basic, flat, bendable frosty (ie you cant see through it) plastic material with a decal over full face. (sorry i dont know name of plastic...think its polypropylene)

Ratty sporting the 96 version here too...(hope ya dont mind me quoting pic)

Here is the Original 1985 ones the Flat top Race version obviously and "pointy end" Freestyle versions from the Redline 1985 advert you've all seen probably..

So thats the 1985 and 1996 versions above, I don't know about any others. It seems Redline made a real effort with the original 80's plates which were injection moulded with outside ridges on front, and ridges for strength on back with raised Redline lettering on front crossbar section, but later versions were just cheaply die cut polyprop with an overall decal on... easy/cheap to make i guess?

Get a pic up of the ones you have measured already Moley. They are all pretty much same. The size difference between 85 and 95 is not alot, i will take photo next few days with a set of bars so we can see the differences.  :daumenhoch:

Crooch's artwork was just a tracing of the plate and mounting holes.

I emailed Big Daddy Plates a scan of the Tracing last night and this is the Artwork that Big Daddy Plates has come up with.

Can you measure the distance between your mounting holes on you plate in mm.

The tracing off Crooch I approximated to 133mm.

I have asked for pricings for the plate.

If your interested in one then get your name down on the list and I'll see how much discount I can get on multiple plates.

I think Big Daddy might have got this design off Vintage BMX and that US chap who was making the repro plates.

A question for you :

The Redline Logo at the top of the Plate.

Would you have it in Black?

Would you have it filled like the side diagonal logo?

Right, the holes which are for the bar lugs are the same..... it seems that the 96 era plates are just smaller as they cover the "triangle" area in the bars so you can still see the V a bit on the chrome, whereas the 85 solid white version is bigger and overhangs so you see almost no bars.

I am not at home for a few days so cant take pics but when i am ...will.  :daumenhoch:

Regards, getting quotes from companies to repro etc you are in questionable territory now. Whichever way you look at it you are taking a major companies copyrighted product design & trademarked name/logo and planning to manufacture, regardless of quantity.... If I was you would email GORK at SBS (Redline)... you wouldn't want "Cease & Desist" actions brought upon you...would you?  Just a thought  ???  Remember the Shimano DX repro end cap debarcle? And now, anything Hutch/CW etc related gets a stern C&D notice from John de Bruin.. Best be safe than sorry unless you're planning to knock a few up for your mates in your garage.

I wouldn't worry about it!

I am not producing these plates to distribute them!!

I'm going to buy mine and thats it!!

If anyone else wants them then they'll have to contact Big Daddy Plates!

I'm just buying the plate.

Everyman for themselves!!

And if it comes to it!!  I'm not too bothered about the Redline decals on it!

I just want a plate that fits!!  :daumenhoch:

Then why not just buy a sheet of 2 or 3mm Polyprop.... get a craft knife and make one yourself... Del could knock you up some cracking Decals too  ???

Because if its cheap to buy a plate I'd rather do that!!

But if its not then I might go down that route, especially now that I have a tracing of the plate!!

There must be hundreds of type of plastic. What is a plate made from exactly?

Here's mine. Borrowed Crooch's plate, traced round it, Then got Cazbo to adapt to my S&M bars trying to keep the same style. Just printed then laminated. I have asked for a more colourful version, it does look a bit boring as it stands.
Am going to try and do a side plate in this shape aswell.
