Old Rom Photos
billstup:
Andy now owns a ramp building company, Fearless Ramps, which rents some land off of Rom skatepark, its where the car park used to be next to where that old ramp is, so we see him quite often.
Now that I`ve seen some pics of Ralph ect I do seem to recognise some faces, but wouldn`t have been able to put names to them :-[

Billy that pic of you on your calling card is a classic. I used to look at that and go no way man.. Do you remember
the demo we all did at Maidstone show? There was at least 3000 people there i remember they had to get
security to hold em back. The quarter pipes where up against a wall and when we aired there was a window
about 5ft above..It was a cracker..Oh yeah and your rollback 540s where awesome to..
I rode with Bob Haro at the NEC in around 83. We where all in comp and he did a demo. No one rode coaster
brakes then and he did and my head just fell off when i saw what he could do. His aerials where so high and
smooth. When he rolled back.. Oh yes...He also could wheelie without a back brake just using his coaster brake.
Now that was style..Soon as we left that demo we all got coasters and tried to do what he did.. He was a super
nice guy to and for me one of the legends. The originator of freestyle bmx

to be honest, i didn't really know Bob could do high ariels. Thats well cool Mike, to have ridden with the master. Its a bit like saying you had dinner with jesus at the last supper. :) Hats off..

His half pipe was huge for back then, I remember riding it and being shit scared, one side was missing a platform too. Does Andy show up to these Rom session you lot have?
BTW - Do you now remember Ralph Tribe after seeing the pic. ? ???

It was my haulage company that brought that halfpipe back to Rom from its original home down is Sussex somewhere. It was craned onto a 40' flat trailer and Andy and I followed it home in my car - Police escort through Dartford Tunnel and all.....
On the way (still in Sussex or maybe Kent) we stopped at a level crossing, which had a police station just across the road......and overhead power cables going to it.....
Oh yeah, we had them mo-fo's down.... ;D A quick exit was made, with the lorry driver switching to Stealth Mode. Surely no-one would remember a giant U-pipe ont' back of a lorry? Course not. You see them every day, especially back then. ;)
Andy hasn't skated for years, much to my dismay. He's so burnt out from 10 years of frantic work building ramps the last thing he wants to do is go skating. The last time he skated in anger was on a vert ramp we had built in a roller rink in Bristol. It was a round the clock job and we had the thing built in 2 1/2 days - no sleep - then we had a session and he went off. Properly. Absolutely every grind combo you could think of, and every air he ever knew, including a 540, no mean feat if you skate sidesurf like he did. Perhaps not as high as he would've liked but damn cool regardless. A true ruler. Who remembers him tearing around the Moguls at Rom? No-one faster or higher at the time, bike, board or skate 8)
