Here's my survivor Trident, a transatlantic collaboration between VDC and Hot Wheels BMX shop down on the south coast. I bought the frame and fork set from Hot Wheels in the mid-1980s, carried it home on the bus and had to put the stickers on myself. I then built it up with a mish-mash of parts collected from other bikes bitd. It was my daily rider until the 90s, since when it has either been garaged or in storage. According to the serial number (and confirmed by Voris Dixon), this was the 93rd frame off the VDC welding line in September 1983.

Here we go, at long last. Sorry the pics aren't too good, weather was crap.

Do have a new set of decals for it, once I decide what to do i.e. re-chrome or paint.

Beautiful bike! Is this the one I saw in the S and S at MK12? If you ever want to sell, I'm your man.
-
if your referring to mine...thanks for the compliment.Unfortunately i will never sell it,it's my holy grail for 20+ years.
-
Are there different versions of the Trident? Your top tube (Hutchman) doesn't taper to the oval shape at the seatpost clamp?
-
just a bad pic on my part.. it actually does ... not so much of a taper, more of a squish ! ;D

I'm very unsure on the bars.. the x bar is welded right at the back .. but nice !
-
Hutch gen 1 bars by the look of it.
-
Snoopy72.. i have these bars in my temporary possession atm... i agree, they do look like Hutch bars, but as Mick said, the x bar is welded at the very back of the risers but the welding looks more like MIG, not TIG... there are zero weld beads... more like a continuous blob all the way round. :daumenhoch:
-
Some of Hutches welding by todays standards was pretty poor, early items were linked to Robinson, I had a set of genuine gen 2 hutch bars that looked like they had been welded at the bottom of a parrot cage so I wouldn't be surprised if they were hutch gen 1's, don't get me wrong i'm not getting at Hutches quality because they made some very nice gear BITD and prided themselves on decent chrome finishes, if the chrome wasn't quite up to their standard some frames were candied over the top.
-
i'm still not sure tbh bud... this welding looks like the quality you'd get on a MK 1 Burner(sorry guys.. not dissin the Burners... and sorry Mick.. no offence) i'ts sloppy, quite a lot of weld spatter. I've a fair few early Hutch's... they are all WAY better.. BUT they are still a really nice set of bars. :daumenhoch:
-
Let see a pic of the welding.
-
can't get my head round how to put pics on here... face book Rad page any good?
-
don't do face book PM sent

C'mon, let me see my bars! :D I would love it if they were Hutch but always assumed they were something cheap 'n' cheerful. If my 34 year old memory serves me well, they were on my first ever bmx, which was a Cycle Pro frameset built up with a whole lot of random used parts. :daumenhoch:

Just went to reload the pics of my Trident following the recent Photobucket debacle, and realised that I'd uploaded them under my original aka old system username, so can't amend the post. I've therefore posted them again below. The first 3 are from 2011, the final 2 from 2015, both showing the bike in survivor state, as I rode it bitd. :daumenhoch:

My first trident build even though I’ve had one for 5 years or so.
I have a second trident and when I get the parts it will be like the ad in Bmx bi- weekly :daumenhoch:
