Now I love the very early BMX's the weird shapes, sizes, and styles but this is probably my favourite Vintage Racer.
So I have been after this frame for about 5 years now, it has just been nagging me that I didn't have it and couldn't find one.
The chance came up to secure one and I was in like Flynn....
This is an original finish 1976 R&R CR-1 the frame was in pretty bad shape when I got it with loads of surface rust etc, but I have cleaned it up with the help of varying stages of glass polishers rouge. It of course still has some blemishes but for 36 year old chrome it is in pretty good shape now. But it has taken me about 2 weeks of meticulous work.
The forks are Matthews girder forks with the original Matthews hardware. The forks were damaged but have been tig welded and painted (not powdered) in matt black.
The front hub is an incredibly rare Addicks item and the rear is a bendix coaster, both laced to chrome Schurmann rims.
The cranks are TA Specialites Cyclotourist with TA chainring and chainring bolts, I used to use TA cranks bitd on my 1st race bike and wanted to use them again.
It even has R&R seat guts, again fooking rare.
What I love most about these frame are that the twin top tube are actually 1 tube that bends all the way around the rear looptail and back up to the top. Just fooking lush.
All of the parts are the original condition or NOS, nothing has been polished to a mirror shine (thank fook eh?), just cleaned and buffed.
This ladies and gents is the very beginning of this amazing sport of ours, this is where the likes of the JMC's, GT's, Torkers etc came from, this is their Grandad.

I like that a lot, those forks are bonkers :D :smitten:
personally i'd spin the seat clamp round so it's working with the slot in the seat tube, not against it (but that's just me, one of my pet hates is people with Quadangle's fitting the clamp in the regular fashion when the slot is at the front ::) )
Top bombing :daumenhoch:

I know what you mean and I did originally have it in that direction but you then get the bolts pointing outwards on one side, so I went with the best look for those bolts which was at the rear. I may change it about again though.

FOOKIN BEAUTIFUL SEAN, and from the year of my birth :daumenhoch: I would love one of these frames :smitten:
Are those forks original to the frame? I've seen a few R & Rs' but none with the Matthews forks.
Great work.

Well you already know exactly what I think abou this bike Sean and how awsome R&R's are, they are a piece of history along and I'd guess not many on here would have ever seen or heard of one before so top marks from me for bringing it to the masses. :4_17_5: :4_17_5:
Adam...No the Girder forks were not standard on R&R's they were standard on Matthews (monoshock) bikes, MS-'s etc :daumenhoch:
-
Absolutely stunning. :daumenhoch:
-
Love these 70's bikes, completely Brilliant :4_17_5:

As Ash says the forks were not standard on the frame, but they must have been on the bike a long time as the frame actually has marks where the forks hit it when on 'full lock', take a look at the pictures again and look at the square brace on the front of the top tube and you will see a vertical mark (which is on either side) where the forks have been banging into it throughout the years.

must void it's warranty surely ??? ;D

I would imagine you are right Rob, I will see if I can get hold of a manual for it to see ;)

Your builds are not only real eye-openers on those early days, especially for us collectors outside of the US, but you seem to always go for the rarest of the rare parts and meanwhile making sense all together.
Hat down!!
-
I cant profess to have that much old bmx love these days to be honest but of late, there have been a few bikes that have made me look and think...hmmmm.....yeah, all really early stuff like Carls Robbo, Ash's early SE's, someone called Studds, Stacks or sommat (pretty sure he's a man u fan) had a de Costa that I really liked but this, this is really lovely.
Very well done Sean :4_17_5:

Some changes coming on this bike soon, the seat has already been changed to a Schwinn sprung seat, I have now finally found some R&R forks and an incredibly rare 1" clamp on stem.

Look forward to those changes pal, R&R fork you say :smitten: :smitten:
